This incisive report asks: what does a future with the Taliban mean for Afghanistan? "For them it's not a peace process", Amrullah Saleh, former head of Afghan Intelligence tells us. A Taliban prisoner concurs, "if the foreign troops leave, the Taliban will come back to Kabul". Saleh is adamant that the Taliban's "maximalist agenda" will lead to civil war once the West leaves Afghanistan and that the Afghan government participating in empty talks serves no other purpose than political expediency. "Peace talks with the Taliban have always been used to demonstrate to the international community that President Karzai is one step ahead", Fawzia Koofi explains. An MP and single mother, she refuses to be cowed by Taliban aggression, despite facing death threats. A classified Nato report, based on 27000 interrogations, not only states that the Taliban believe their control of Afghanistan is inevitable, but also highlights the links between the Taliban and Pakistan. Across Africa hundreds of thousands of people each year are left homeless when they are forcibly evicted from their homes by the authorities. In most cases evictions are conducted without any due process, consultation, adequate notice or compensation. Amnesty International has documented mass forced evictions in Nairobi, Accra, N'Djamena, Port Harcourt, Cairo and Harare in addition to other cities and countries across the continent. Forced evictions can have catastrophic effects, particularly for people already living in poverty. They do not just lose their homes and possessions, they also lose their livelihoods, their social networks and the basic services they rely on for survival. Protesters gathered in Brussels, Belgium on Wednesday to demand support for employment and poverty reduction, ahead of the informal European Union (EU) Summit scheduled on the same day. Measures to deal with deflation and attain growth are the core issues up for discussion at the informal EU summit. Germany, the largest economy in the EU as well as the eurozone, has insisted on cutting down the deficit and introducing structural reforms by debt recipient countries such as Greece. As Francois Hollande took office as the French President, many hoped that he could persuade EU policy makers to support economic growth and expand investment. They also hoped that their bill of financial transaction tax could be approved and ...
