This is pretty crazy, more than a year ago we reported on this channel that Porsche was busy testing and developing e-fuels, and the point of this fuel was to keep the ice powered cars on the road, drop their emissions and keep them performing as intended when they where developed by the company. And since then Porsche has furthered this tech, and other companies like stelantis have also started working on e-fuels for their engines, if you want to see more on that go and watch this video. The Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF) is a transcription factor, which consists of an alpha and a beta subunit. One of three alpha subunits dimerizes with one of two beta subunits. The alpha subunits are sensitive to oxygen, whereas the beta subunits are not.
In this video, the domain structure of an HIF1α subunit is shown. A domain in the center of the protein contains two critical proline residues, which are important for the stability of the protein. An arginine residue in the C-terminal transactivation domain regulates transcriptional activity. Under normoxic conditions, the tissue concentration of molecular oxygen is in the range of 10 to 30 µM. Under these conditions, a member of the prolyl hydroxylase domain family (PHD) hydroxylates one or both of the critical proline residues in the HIFα proteins. When a single or both of the critical proline residues have been hydroxylated, the von Hippel Lindau protein (pVHL), a tumor suppressor protein, binds to HIFα. The von Hippel Lindau protein associates with a ubiquitin ligase complex that causes the attachment of ubiquitin to HIFα. Polyubiquitinated HIFα is degraded by the 26S proteasome.
In addition to the proline residues, HIFα proteins contain a critical arginine residue in the C-terminal transactivation domain. The residue is hydroxylated by a dioxigenase designated factor inhibiting HIF1α (FIH1). The hydroxylated arginine residue inhibits the association of the p300 and CBP transcriptional co-activators with HIFα.
Under hypoxic conditions, the activity of PHD dioxigenases decreases. As a consequence, the proline residues of HIF are no longer hydroxylated, and the HIFα units are stabilized. A HIFα subunit associates with a HIFβ subunit. The heterodimer binds to a consensus sequence in the DNA. Since FIH1 no longer hydroxylates the arginine residue in the C-terminal transactivation domain of HIFα, the p300 and CBP co-activators are able to bind. The heterodimer activates the transcription of target genes.

This is pretty crazy, more than a year ago we reported on this channel that Porsche was busy testing and developing e-fuels, and the point of this fuel was to keep the ice powered cars on the road, drop their emissions and keep them performing as intended when they where developed by the company. But in todays video we will be looking at a new E-Fuel plant that is being build currently in Texas. And this is big.
HIF Global has been given the green light to build the world's largest e-fuels production facility in Matagorda, Texas, following the success of its pilot project in Chile. Construction of the facility is expected to begin in 2024, with the goal of producing approximately 200 million gallons per year of shipping fuel and e-gasoline by 2027.
Now for those that don’t know, E-fuels are synthetic fuels that are made from renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar power, and carbon dioxide. The process involves taking carbon dioxide from the air and combining it with hydrogen to create a liquid fuel that can be used in internal combustion engines. The resulting fuel has the potential to be used as a substitute for fossil fuels in transportation and industry.
One of the main advantages of e-fuels is that they can be used in existing internal combustion engines, without the need for significant modifications. This is in contrast to electric vehicles, which require a significant infrastructure investment in charging stations and battery production facilities. And even hydrogen powered cars, that need a whole different fuel deliver system and new filling stations.
But there are some negatives, you see The production of e-fuels is highly energy-intensive and requires large amounts of renewable energy to be produced. Critics argue that the energy used to produce e-fuels would be better spent on developing renewable energy infrastructure for electric vehicles. Which I really don’t agree with since there is already over a billion ICE powered vehicles on our roads, and the production of e-fuels has the potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of all of those existing internal combustion engines, and then lets be honest electric isn’t all that green. The production process of those cars are pretty bad, and if we have to replace all 1.4 billion cars with EV’s the effect will be a lot worse.
Now the plan is that HIF Global's new e-fuel plant will produce 200 million gallons of e-fuel per year using 300,000 tons of green hydrogen and 2 million tons of recycled carbon dioxide. The ingredients are combined to create 1.4 million tons of methanol, which can be used in the chemical industry and as shipping fuel. Now this would help a lot since global shipping is really bad for the environment, and unfortunately we need it. Alternatively, it can be further refined and turned into e-fuel for passenger vehicles.
Now since it is so energy intensive to produce these fuels they are quite expensive. The fuel coming from HIF Global's pilot project in Chile cost about $200 per gallon. Which is not ideal, However, HIF Global believes that once e-fuels are being produced at an industrial scale, prices could fall to around $8.51 per gallon. The construction of the world's largest e-fuel plant in Texas should help drive prices down further by achieving economies of scale.
The new e-fuel plant in Texas will provide an opportunity for the automotive industry to continue using internal combustion engines while reducing their carbon footprint. Porsche has already been using e-fuels produced by HIF Global in its one-make racing series in Germany, and other manufacturers are likely to follow suit as e-fuel production becomes more widespread.

Høgskolen i Finnmark, Alta besøkte tirsdag 25. august 2009 Sjøsamisk Tun i Smørfjord. Det var reiseliv og turisme linja ved høgskolen som besøkte tunet og fikk orientering om bakgrunnen for tunet og lokalhistorisk innblikk med tanke på samholdet mellom sjøsamer og reindriftsamer som har rike tradisjoner i denne bygda. Etterpå var det omvisning på tunet hvor de fikk se eldre gammetradisjoner og besøkte også båthuset nede ved sjøen.
