AOL Artists Launch New Summer Canvases

Today marks the first installment in a series of canvases that will be launched throughout the next few months on AOL.com, all focused around the theme of summer! From now until end of August, 20 new canvases by nine AOL Artists will be released on AOL.com.

We are thrilled to introduce Rachell Sumpter and Keat Toah to the AOL Artists family, and to welcome back long time friend to AOL and Alumni AOL Artist, Mr. Kiji.

Debuting today on AOL.com are six canvases - Keat Toah's "Lady Liberty;" Rachell Sumpter's "Regata," "Balloons," "Listen," and Sweetheart Ride;" and Mr. Kiji's "BBQ," all of which are reminiscent of summertime, sunshine, and the beach.

Keat Teoh is a New York based artist who creates witty, lighthearted illustrations using watercolor. His work has appeared in publications such as the New York Times, Inc. Magazine and the Boston Pheonix. Rachell Sumpter is a West Coast artist who creates small-scale paintings that celebrate the beauty of western nature and wilderness. Rachell has exhibited in galleries internationally including shows in Tokyo, Stockholm and Madrid.

Make sure to keep visiting AOL.com to see all the canvases in our Summer Series launches.

HuffPost Canada Celebrates One-Year Anniversary

Last night the Huffington Post Canada team celebrated their first birthday- and in style, if we do say so ourselves! The two-story office transformed into a playground for clients, politicians, bloggers, friends, media, and of course, our (newly-coined) honourary Canadian, Arianna Huffington! Oh, and Conrad Black (pictured above). Even Team HuffPost Quebec jumped on the short flight from Montreal to celebrate their English counterparts.

We presented the HuffPost Canada team with a video of birthday wishes from some favourite friends- including CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos, Marc and Craig Kielburger of Free the Children, Conrad Black and Leader of the Official Opposition party of Canada, Thomas Mulcair.

AOL 25for25 Grant Winner Launches "Sites of Memory"

AOL 25for25 Grant winner Angela Reichers has launched "Sites of Memory," a map based website that connects disparate New York City locations to curated historic narratives of the city – mainly funded by the AOL Grant Program. The site is accompanied by a smartphone application, allowing users to engage virtually while physically visiting each site. The map stretches throughout the five boroughs of New York City and stories range from the story of Juan Perez who was eaten by a polar bear at Brooklyn's Prospect Park Zoo to the disastrous sinking of the General Slocum steamship in 1904. The stories are narrated by Kurt Andersen, Lewis H. Lapham, Angela Reichers, and Luc Sante. Angela Reicher is an art director and writer based in New York. Before founding Sites of Memory, she was the art director for Harper's Magazine and a contributing designer for New York Times T Magazine.

In October 2010, AOL awarded 25 groundbreaking creatives $25k grants. A distinguished advisory board was assembled to review all applications, including Adam D. Weinberg, Director, Whitney Museum of American Art; Chrissie Iles, Curator, Whitney Museum of American Art; Andy Spade, Partners & Spade; Rafael de Cardenas, Architecture at Large; Kim Hastreiter, Paper Magazine; Christian Viveros Faune, Village Voice; Jen Bekman, 20x200; and Glenn O'Brien, Writer.

We are thrilled that we had the opportunity to nurture the launch of such an innovative and experiential website. To learn more about the 25for25 grant program and Angela you can visit her page on AOLArtists.com.
