A C&NW; GP7??? Leading a stack train?? HOLY COW!!! Nelson, IL. 6/15/1993
I have NO idea what the story is on this! My wife and I where trackside at Woodland Shores IL, when I spotted this coming east, and wonder what the heck is this. A C&NW GP7 4107 running long hood forward of two UP SD's 6348-6233 pulling a stack train at track speed. That's a first for me! Seeing an old Geep leading a stack! The second clip is a UP 6320 and is also east bound at the coaling tower seen in the distance of the first clip, and is at Nelson, IL. Doing some research on the GP7! It was a former Rock Island unit #1202 and renumbered 4432. It was classed as a GP7R after its rebuild by the CRI&P. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294.5

Metra UP-W Line Cab-Car Ride: C&NW; Power at West Chicago & More!
Metra UP-W Line Cab-Car Ride: C&NW; Power at West Chicago & More!
Riding inbound (eastbound) Metra / Union Pacific- West Line train #510, from West Chicago to Ogilvie Transportation Center (Northwestern Station) in downtown Chicago, as seen from the front vestibule window of the cab-car. Not the whole ride is shown; just these tidbits: First, a surprise just past the West Chicago depot: unpatched, ex-Chicago & North Western Dash-9 #8710 leads a Union Pacific SD70M with an autorack train and some manifest freight tacked on the rear. It's quite rare that a freight these days could be called "CNW 8710 West"! Once this passes, the new signals that replaced the C&NW-style signal bridge between West Chicago and Winfield, along with the now-signalless bridge, can be seen as we hit Metra's track speed before coming to a station stop at Winfield. Next, past Winfield, is a road overpass under construction, just before the old Chicago, Aurora & Elgin (CA&E) electric interurban bridge over what is now UP's triple-track main into Chicago. The bridge carried the CA&E's line to Elgin, which had a branch to Geneva. Just south of this bridge were the CA&E's Wheaton Shops, and its Aurora line, with a branch to Batavia. The CA&E was owned by the same interests that controlled the North Shore Line to Milwaukee, the South Shore Line to South Bend, and many other electric interurban railroads-- unfortunately, the CA&E was the first to go of these, and the South Shore is the only one still in operation today. Thankfully though, the entire CA&E system (except ...

Join us as we ride along in the cab of Chicago and North Western SD-40 dash 2 #6814 on a typical run from Belle Fourche to Rapid City, South Dakota. This video incorporates all natural sound, with no narration, to get a "being there" effect of a day's work in the cab. The trip begins in Belle Fourche, operating over 10 mile per hour tracks before reaching 40 miles per hour on ribbon rail south of St. Onge. We see local work being done and experience the ride into Rapid City. Copytright 1994, C. Vision Productions Color/45 Minutes No narration

The last month of operation for Chicago & North Western 4-6-0 No. 1385, filmed in May, 1998. We see the locomotive being serviced at North Freedom, Wisconsin for a day of trips over the Mid Continent Railway. The engine is pulling a train of Lackawanna steel coaches between North Freedom and Quartzite Lake. The engine was retired not long after this footage was taken, and is now awaiting a new boiler. Visit www.1385.org for more info about how you can help get this proud engine back on its feet!

N Scale CNW Layout
N Scale CNW Layout
Here are a few moments on my micro N Scale layout based on a town in southern Minnesota along the Chicago & North Western's "Alco Line". Appropriate diesel audio is used when possible taken from a CD distributed by the C&NW Historical Society. The layout measures 28"x49", with a removable dual layer staging yard(s) that extends another 36". I used Atlas code 55 sectional track with all joints soldered and plenty of feeders. Due to the small size and tight radius this is best suited for smaller equipment. I run the long streamliner cars, but clearance is close. Here is a download link to the pdf of the July 2010 N Scale Magazine article with track diagram; www.rocketcarmedia.com

We are trackside on the NS Pocahontas division at Maybeury West Virginia as we watch a Sperry Rail car pass us at speed. These powered railcars have a unique sound, and at one time severed as a doodlebug for some railroad in earlier years. The Sperry #139 was original owned by the C&NW as #300890, and went into service for Sperry in May of 1972. It is currently out of service in St Louis. Was trying to do research on the C&NW 300890, but came up empty handed. Thanks for watching... All parts of this video and trademark are protected. We are in Monongahela Railway country on the Manor branch in SW Pennsylvania as we watch a Wisconsin Power and Electric train head to the Bailey mine. The exhaust rolls out as the engineer notches the units out, and the GE is sounding especially good, as it gets under way. WEPX trains where handled by CSX, and always had a variety of power that usually always had C&NW in the lash-up somewhere. Video was taken 5/09/1991. Thanks for watching. C&NW; EMD SD40-2 #6847 With A Nice Sounding Gong Bell At The Illionis Railway Museum
Set to HD! Filmed on July 16, 2011 at the Illionis Railway Museum "Diesel Days" My friend Ross (94amtrak) and I went to visit the IRM for their Diesel Days event. This engine is a EMD SD40-2 that was owned by the Chicago & Northwestern railroad and then Union Pacific who donated it to the IRM. It has it's original "Gong" bell which is similer to a railroad crossing bell or a fire warning bell. This engine also had a rotary beacon on it's roof that was operateing but, both bulbs were burned out! This was truly one amazing engine & I was really happy to see it. This SD40-2 also has a nice Lesile RS3L horn on it. For the first 3 clips it was swtiching but, for the last clip they did a run by with the SD40-2 if full throttle & the BN U30C in dynamic brake to simulate a heavy load. In the first clip the IRM also has operateing "Wig wag" railroad crossing siginals! Video property of metraF40PH163.
