00:25 the blurb is about in vitro fertilization, of course, which was brand new back then. enjoy the moody theme music. i have a lot to say about gil melle, the soundtrack composer. i'll try and point out tasty 01:50 big piano stuff. melle started as a sax player but obviously was more interested in piano at this point in his career. (starship invasions has probably the most amazing electric piano work ever put into a movie!) this is a very dark movie. i think a part of that is problems with my transfer process and i apologize for that, but also just think it's a darkly lit movie. i wants to be gothic, with the thunderstorm and the disproportionate home (ok, yes, he's a noted doctor but as we'll see later, his home is the size of a bond villain's!) so i pointed this out in the review but i'm really into the way the movie gives us this amazing coincidence (you hit the dog, then it turns out you have all these facilities to treat her, AND you just happen to be looking for a guinea pig!) but i like how the movie doesn't make a big deal out 06:43 a really cool guitar and vintage synth figure! it reappears and is developed as the movie goes along. listen to and track the movie's score as we move through the narrative! 07:50 the thing you have to realize is that gordon and hollister haven't talked in years. and he's all business. the peace-and-love hippy daughter-in-law annoys the shit out of me. i think that probably makes me a bad person.

00:08 SOMEBODY FORGOT TO TELL YOU THAT ALL THE LINES THEY WROTE FOR YOU SUCK AND YOU SHOULD HAVE HAD YOUR AGENT RIP THIS WRITER A NEW ONE AND COME UP WITH A WHOLE NEW CONCEPT FOR YOUR CHARACTER i'm sorry, i don't mean to lash out. this part of the movie is sorta boring. i'm sure the woman playing her is a totally awesome person, i think she got bad coaching. 01:50 ah touching the hand of god. not all grandiose hollister! great mood shift in the music. 03:04 and plushies around the world weep. 03:45 GENETICALLY PERFECT! dude, i mean it, this guy is sorta talking crazy. the children we didn't have will in some way live! a temporary life preservation container! it's like a baby thermos! DOCTOR SHRIMP! so... successful suicide, then? paul! paul! what's! paul! Paul! what does she whisper? something about a sandwich? ok you asked for more long-ass 06:30 notice she thinks the fetus is going to die. later when victoria comes along that made her kinda like an unwanted child. thanks for the hypoxia cul de sac! the baby is growing superfast. 07:53 nice shot 08:02 born into an incubator. a motherless birth. try and get your head around that. what kind of being will you be? 08:42 if you do say so yourself 09:00 because of the many felonies. 09:28 eight-year-old in an incubator! weird huh?

the piano takes the theme and the strings come in. then the woodwinds and i think a dry electric guitar? a lovely moment for gil melle. oh and the naked hotness is ok too i guess. 01:00 and 01:24 solo piano accents. 01:50 the act of love has consequences. kinda a slasher movie morality going on here. 03:28 she's so cute when she's sitting in a dark corner shooting up like a junkie! 03:55 well in california id imagine 04:05 what the hell does that mean? 04:29 if looks could kill 04:47 i swear that car's getting bigger 06:09 it's like how neo learns kung fu! i can't believe that didn't occur to me before. 07:30 she has to go after late-term fetuses, the ones hollister said were not okay to experiment on. 08:10 she's wondering when life begins. and how would she know? she never had a childhood. i find this part really touching. 09:15 kids are no help but her conspiracy with the dog comes through. they really are sorta like their own race. scary tantrum

01:05 They're alive, and that makes them beautiful. every movie has a mix of good and bad and i think that's the dumbest damn line in this entire movie. 01:53 It's good to see him killing -- i mean working! working again! 02:16 i like this moment with rock hudson. where are you in all this, my late wife? look at the picture, she's quite lovely and seems to be about 29. rock's closeups here are nicely done. editing gaffe cutting in diane lane that makes her sound like a disembodied voice. maybe it's deliberate but if so it doesn't quite work. yet the whole scene is a bit spooky and sad, as hollister delivers up a powerful dose of passive aggression at 02:45 and diane's key-lit closeup as she watches him walk away is quite nicely done, delicate and sad. 03:24 they're gonna call! the whole dog mass murder thing has gotten the fam back in touch! 03:50 here get ready for a LOT of lab drama and tons of voiceover. this is a very *written* movie, 04:38 love the distorted pup-in-a-jar with the voiceover. 05:10 the dog is now much older. you wonder if the mother, who is in a lot of pain, is providing the energy for the dog embryo to grow se 05:34 music kickassness, faded out clumsily at 06:07. 06:35 you're alive vs it's alive. get it? i think that's a clever writing touch, in fact. 07:10 after affirming #1's status as a unique living entity, hollister goes on to name him "#1." rescued soul or test subject? you be the judge. 09:05 refernce back to the title theme, but lower and more ...

it's like a safari look and then he talks about algeria. she's mostly a walking encyclopedia. she's like like a humpable 70s internet. HAHAHAHAHAHA. daughter in law shuts it down. 01:38 that's tennille! 01:57 it's a perfuctibly normal urge, i'll have you know. 02:20 in the 70s did people really party by huddling around a chess table? 02:48 um not really. 03:08 what is the difference between abstract and concrete experience? 03:53 rock's comedy double-take is a bit of a mess but i still like it 04:24 helluva party 05:06 he's sorta teddy bear-like there what are they playing checkers? they're moving once every two seconds! 06:45 ish hollister shows her how to throw a fight. and then roddy does something truly horrible. i like how she's all soft-spoken in response though. 08:20 i have to admit i love the draw giggle. 08:55 haha! he's a broken man! 09:08 beautiful embryo love music. worth sitting through the last twenty minutes for. seriously.

so how would you coach carrera here? "you're a 25-year-old guinea-pig woman with the mind of a child except you've learned the multiplication tables with the help of a mind-control technique developed by the CIA-sponsored torturer Ewan Cameron. then 02:35 you kill a fish. now GO! ACTION!" can we just say "victoria" once please? at 03:15 it's sorta sweet and endearing, but mostly it's skeevy. 03:30 yeah! she's hot! ew unconscious blockers. so the idea, you get that, is that our social upbringing actually stunts our intellectual growth. 04:40 oh fucking great! she's fucking back! 05:05 see the scene in firefly when the superintelligent chick reads the bible. 05:41 oh dear we really needed another take there 06:06 i love long shots like this, you're supposed to feel the connection with the characters that bridges the distance of the long shot and make you connect it with the voice over, but here it doesn't really work. 07:31 you see, you're a hot chick and i invented you. i like "you may never happen again." a little tweaky, he's transfixed by her as a living thing but is still also a specimen to him. she's a jane doe! 09:08 "i really dont exist do i" goes better than the closeup that follows she's listening to the tapes descibing her own creation. that's hardcore. you know?

Title: Embryo Alternate Title(s): Created to Kill, Ectogen Mill Creek Rating: ***/**** (three out of four) Year: 1976 Genre: Medical Thriller IMDB Rating: 4.9 MCR Hall of Fame Nominee: Barbara Carrera Collection: Nightmare Worlds 50-Movie Pack SEE BELOW the entire movie is available as a video response. Some things I didn't mention about this most excellent mid-70s medical techshock flick: It's one of the first in a 70s trend in hospital horror movies, leading to coma, the manitou, the lazarus syndrome (a mill creek title!), and a bunch of others. i completely wrote hollister's son and daughter in law out of the review. the son is a prop. daughter-in-law is sorta amusingly annoying. note the it's alive, therefore it's beautiful line. it seems like rock hudson loses faith in this project. if i had to guess it would be because of roddy mcdowell, whose performance is inexplicable. sorry for all the sleazy, oily talk about barbara carrera but she is just ... rowr. dishy. i hope the fact that she's rowr in 1976 will absolve me with my girl. ___ My movie reviews on this page will be devoted exclusively to the films featured in the Mill Creek Entertainment series of bargain DVD collections, and specifically those selections that are in the public domain. Mill Creek movies tend to be low-budget, dated, obscure, outrageous, ponderous, exploitative, and bizarre. Some are unique and brilliant. Many are simply abysmal. For this reason, my four-star rating system is different from ...

Mill Creek Statement of Purpose
Mill Creek Statement of Purpose
Someone recently asked me what Mill Creek is and what Mill Creek reviews are. I made a couple of videos trying to explain it and then decided to do this instead: some cool clips along with a scratch project i did trying to learn how to work with some recording software.- The movies are: Dr. Tarr's Torture Dungeon (1973) Manos: The Hands of Fate (1966) Embryo (1976) Idaho Transfer (1973) The Brain Machine (1977) The Alpha Incident (1978) The Manipulator (1971) Fury of the Wolfman (1972) Evil Brain From Outer Space (1964) The only thing all these things have in common is they're distributed by Mill Creek Entertainment, and they're all in the public domain. Many of them are nevertheless excellent.

EMBRYO (Trailer) - An Angel Ruiz Flick
EDIT 7.31.07: Embryo was screened at the Phoenix Comicon and the Phoenix Film Festival. It is submitted for the Phoenix Horror/Sci-Fi Film Festival in October '07. EMBRYO, an Angel Ruiz flick, is an independent film short. There were limited copies of the DVD with plans to make more. For production stills and more information on Embryo and other projects by Flicks of Fury, please click on link below. www.snapshotfilm.net This is the trailer for an independent film I was fortunate enough to be a part of. Angel Ruiz is a writer, director, producer, film maker, and actor. I love working with him because of his attention to detail, his clever storylines, his patience, and his organization. His work most closely resembles the artistic genious of M. Night Shyamalan. Yes, it's a big compliment. It's also very true. EMBRYO is his latest project and will be submitted to the Phoenix Film Festival in 2007. Angel Ruiz www.myspace.com
