Rocky 1 - Unofficial Trailer (1976)
On November 25, 1975, Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) is introduced as a small-time boxer and collector for Anthony Gazzo (Joe Spinell), a loan shark, living in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. The World Heavyweight Championship bout is scheduled for New Year's Day 1976, the year of the United States Bicentennial. When the opponent of undefeated heavyweight champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is injured, Creed comes up with the idea of giving a local underdog a shot at the title and, because he likes Rocky's nickname, "The Italian Stallion", he selects the relatively unknown fighter. He puts it in lights by proclaiming "Apollo Creed meets 'The Italian Stallion'". The fight promoter says the decision is "very American", but Creed adds it is also "very smart". To prepare for the fight Rocky trains with a 1920s-era ex-bantamweight fighter and gym owner, Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith). Mickey always considered Rocky's potential to be better than his effort, and the two conflict over Mickey's motives for training Rocky for the big fight. Rocky's good friend Paulie (Burt Young), a meat-packing-plant worker, lets him practice his punches on the carcasses hanging in the freezers. During training Rocky dates Paulie's shy, quiet sister, Adrian (Talia Shire), who works as a clerk in a local pet store. The night before the fight Rocky confides to Adrian that he does not expect to beat Creed, and that all he wants is to go the distance with Creed (which no fighter ...

Rocky (1976) - Hagfilms Honest Reviews
Rocky (1976) - Hagfilms Honest Reviews
I always appreciated the original for being a film in its own right, and not just a formula duplicated to make stupid money. The story of Rocky, is a story that we have seen time and time again, more so since its release in 1976. The rise of a no body to sporting legend. We have seen this formula replicated in as varied forms as Eminem's 8 mile and the 1980's comedy Teen Wolf. But here, in its rawest form, it is so much more than just a sport film. Don't let the trappings of the formula detract from your appreciation of this movie. We meet, in the opening act, a down and out boxer, living on the poverty line in Philadelphia, boxing for peanuts, acting as a lone shark for a low rate hood, but despite those two violent past times, we see a man who's a gentle giant, kind and considerate. Stallone is brilliant in the role, he plays Rocky as a bit of an idiot, mumbling and bumbling his way through the streets, but ultimately being a kind hearted and with an honest and clear viewing head on his shoulders. The fact that he got this one in a million chance was a bit implausible, and the scene where Apollo Creed finds the Italian Stallion in a book and chooses him purely because it sounded good is a bit farcical and probably wouldn't hold up today, but just allow yourself to believe that and the rest of the journey is moving and soul searching. The question of whether or not we have it in us to face up to the task at hand and give your best shot is a primal one, and one we can all ...
