Chen escaped from house arrest in northeastern China last month and sought refuge in the US Embassy in Beijing, embarrassing China and creating an uncomfortable backdrop for US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's visit to improve ties between the world's two biggest economies. 16/05/12 Nearly three years after the end of the 26-year civil war in Sri Lanka that reportedly left an estimated 80000-100000 dead, questions are still arising about alleged war crimes and how they will be addressed. The Killing Fields, first broadcast by Channel 4 in June last year and a follow up aired this March called Sri Lanka's Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished, have been significant in bringing evidence of executions, the shelling of civilians and other atrocities to light. The Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence rejects the evidence, however, arguing that it has been falsified by Channel 4 and that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE ) were responsible for a proportion of the civilian casualties. It also rejected calls from the UN-led investigation into alleged war crimes, opting for a locally-organised investigation, the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC). What action will the Sri Lankan government take in light of new footage and will it be forced address the issue of high-command responsibility? After the failing of the international community to prevent such atrocities, what role can they play in the future? Join us at the Frontline Club to discuss the impact of Sri Lanka's Killing Fields and the situation today in Sri Lanka. Chaired by Stephen Sackur, the host of BBC Hardtalk. With: Callum Macrae, journalist, filmmaker and Director of both Sri Lanka's Killing Fields and Sri Lanka's Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished that documents ...

The United Nations is blaming Iran for supplying the Syrian army with weapons. The UN says it has found evidence Iran been organising illegal shipments. Meanwhile, both Russia and the US acknowledge that they are helping the two sides in Syria's internal conflict as well. The implications of this are profound: not only are the two sides on the ground ignoring the terms of the ceasefire, but it also seems that foreign countries - which on paper signed up to the Annan plan and its spirit of demilitarisation - are, in practice and in different ways, both offering supplies which undermine it. Iran would say that makes criticism of it sound a bit hollow. And it also reinforces the idea that Syria has turned into a proxy conflict between Russia on one side, and the self-titled Friends of Syria on the other. Laurence Lee reports.

The city court of Xiamen is hearing the case, and state media says he faces life imprisonment rather than the death penalty. Lai was deported from Canada back to China last year after an 11-year diplomatic struggle. He was immediately arrested and later pleaded guilty to extensive corruption charges. He was accused of running a multi-billion dollar smuggling operation in Xiamen in the 1990s, bribing officials and evading billions of dollars of government taxes. Lai fled to Canada in 1999 and sought asylum. Canada rejected his claim and deported him after assurances from Beijing he would not be tortured or given the death penalty. But the decision was controversial as Lai's accountant and brother both mysteriously died in a Chinese prison and the Canadian court was not given their autopsy reports.

Sign the petition: rethinkafghanistan.com President Obama has committed 17000 more troops to Afghanistan. This decision raises serious questions about troops, costs, overall mission, and exit strategy. Historically, it has been Congress' duty to ask questions in the form of oversight hearings that challenge policymakers, examine military spending, and educate the public. After witnessing the absence of oversight regarding the Iraq war, we must insist Congress hold hearings on Afghanistan. America needs some serious reality check! admit your bitches before you accuse others. By conservative estimates, the population of the United states prior to European contact was greater than 12 million. Four centuries later, the count was reduced by 95% to 237 thousand. "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue" . . . and made the first contact with the "Indians." For Native Americans, the world after 1492 would never be the same. This date marked the beginning of the lo More..ng road of persecution and genocide of Native Americans, our indigenous people. Genocide was an important cause of the decline for many tribes. In 1493, when Columbus returned to the Hispaniola, he quickly implemented policies of slavery and mass extermination of the Taino population of the Caribbean. Within three years, five million were dead. Las Casas, the primary historian of the Columbian era, writes of many accounts of the horrors that the Spanish colonists inflicted upon the indigenous population: hanging them en mass, hacking their children into pieces to be used as dog feed, and other horrid cruelties. The works of Las Casas are often omitted from popular American history books and courses because Columbus is considered a hero by many, even today. Mass killing did not cease, however, after Columbus departed. Expansion of the European colonies led to similar genocides. "Indian Removal" policy was put into action to clear the land for white settlers. Methods for the removal included ...
