M 6.9 EARTHQUAKE - OFF THE EAST COAST OF HONSHU, JAPAN 3/14/12
14 Mar 2012 09:37 TOKYO, March 14 (Reuters) - There were no immediate reports of damage after northern Japan was hit by an earthquake which the Japan Meteorological Agency said had a preliminary magnitude of 6.8. The epicentre of the quake was in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of northern Japan, the agency said, adding that a tsunami warning for a wave with an estimated height of 50 cm had been issued. On March 11, 2011, the country's northeast coast was struck by a magnitude 9 quake, the strongest in Japan on record, and a massive tsunami, which triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years since Chernobyl. The disaster left up to 23000 dead or missing. Music: Sinner DC and Sonic Boom - Showdown Aorta www.sinnerdc.com

Animation of March 11, 2011 Honshu tsunami propagation across the Pacific
Propagation of the Honshu tsunami across the Pacific Ocean on March 11, 2011 as simulated by the unstructured-mesh ocean model SLIM ( www.climate.be ). This simulation shows how the wave develops as it propagates across the Pacific and interacts with bathymetric features and islands. The unstructured mesh of the global ocean has been generated with Gmsh ( www.geuz.org ) and the initial conditions were taken from the study of Yushiro Fujii and Kenji Satake ( iisee.kenken.go.jp ). The color scale is cropped at +/- 10 cm to highlight the wave propagation. Authors: Benjamin de Brye Jonathan Lambrechts Emnanuel Hanert Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium www.uclouvain.be
