Mountain Bike Camping in an Urban Wilderness, Conroe, Texas
Mountain Bike Camping in an Urban Wilderness, Conroe, Texas
I went mountain bike camping for Earth Day, 2011. The location I selected was several miles from my home in Conroe, Texas. After asking the land owner for permission to camp on the property for 24 hours, he said, "No problem, enjoy being close to nature. Are you sure you want to do this? It's going to be hot." I said, "Thanks. It's going to be great! I love to be outdoors and don't mind the heat." The plan was to use as little modern technology as practical: no gasoline, no electricity, no lights, no cell phone, no plumbing. Since I wanted to document the day for YouTube, my camcorder was the only exception to the rule of "no modern technology." I ate locally grown food and spent my time looking at nature, listening to nature, smelling nature, touching nature, making sketches and writing in my nature journal. It was difficult to leave after 24 hours in the forest. The wilderness was so peaceful. When leaving the woods, I recited the following poem by Michael S. Glaser: A BLESSING FOR THE WOODS Before I leave, almost without noticing, before I cross the road and head toward what I have intentionally postponed— Let me stop to say a blessing for these woods: for crows barking and squirrels scampering, for trees and fungus and multi-colored leaves, for the way sunlight laces with shadows through each branch and leaf of tree, for these paths that take me in, for these paths that lead me out. RNA interference (RNAi): by Nature Video
RNA interference (RNAi): by Nature Video
RNA interference (RNAi) is an important process, used by many different organisms to regulate the activity of genes. This animation explains how RNAi works and introduces the two main players: small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs). We take you on an audio-visual journey, diving into a cell to show how genes are transcribed to make messenger RNA (mRNA) and how RNAi can silence specific mRNAs to stop them from making proteins. The animation is based on the latest research, to give you an up-to-date view. If you'd like to know more about the structures and processes you see in this video, check out the accompanying slideshow: www.nature.com

Secrets of the Black Death - by Nature Video
Secrets of the Black Death - by Nature Video
The Black Death pandemic swept across Europe in the mid-14th century killing about half the population. It was caused by a bacterium called Yersinia pestis. This strain of bacteria is still around today, but intriguingly it causes far fewer deaths. To find out why, researchers reconstructed a medieval Yersinia pestis genome -- and compared it to the genomes of contemporary strains. The team, led by German scientist Johannes Krause, made use of recent technological advances in DNA recovery and analysis to examine DNA from the skeletons of four individuals buried in East Smithfield in London, a well-known medieval burial site for victims of the Black Death. Stem cells put women on fertile ground - by Nature Video
Stem cells from the ovaries of reproductive age women can give rise to cells that appear to be mature oocytes, suggesting that women can produce more eggs than the batch they are born with. The findings, reported in the March 2012 issue of Nature Medicine, open the door to a new generation of assisted fertility treatments. www.nature.com

Sticky tape X-rays: by Nature Video
Sticky tape X-rays: by Nature Video
Peeling sticky tape emits energy that extends into the X-ray regime, reports a study in Nature. The research provides evidence for a phenomenon that was first observed more than 50 years ago. It is well known that unwinding sticky tape produces sparks of light that can easily be seen by the naked eye in a dark room. This phenomenon, known as triboluminescence, is produced by the friction generated when two contacting surfaces move relative to each other.

Brain training: does it work? by Nature Video
Brain training: does it work? by Nature Video
Brain-training computer games are a multimillion pound industry. But this week, a study published in Nature suggests they may not live up to their promise. Neuroscientist Adrian Owen teamed up with the BBC popular science programme 'Bang Goes The Theory' to recruit more than 11000 volunteers for a massive online experiment. The results demolish the widely held belief that the regular use of brain-training games improves general cognitive function. To read the story in full, go to: www.nature.com
