Flesh Tone is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Kelis,^[1] first released on May 14, 2010.^[2] Recorded while the singer was an unsigned artist and while pregnant with her first child, the record is an ode to motherhood and is a distinct departure from the urban sound of her previous album, Kelis Was Here. Production for the songs comes courtesy of David Guetta, Boys Noize, Jean Baptiste and Benny Benassi amongst others.

Flesh Tone was described as a pop album but adopts electropop, synthpop, house and dancehall elements to form a "euphoric dance album" which tributes the birth of Kelis' son. The record serves as her debut with Interscope Records under the will.i.am music brand. Clocking in at just over 37 minutes, contemporary critics praised the album for being cohesive as well as refreshing and lean. "Acapella" was released as the album's lead single and topped the U.S. Dance/Club Songs and UK Dance charts as well as peaking at top-ten on mainstream single charts in Europe. "4th of July (Fireworks)" served as the second single reaching top five on the U.S. Dance/Club Chart and number six in the UK Dance Chart. The album was listed at number fifty-three on NME's list of the "Top 75 Albums of 2010".^[3]

Background and development[link]

In late 2007 it was revealed that Kelis and Jive Records had parted ways following the lack of commercial success with Kelis Was Here in the United States.^[4] Kelis was signed to Pharrell Williams' record label Star Trak which was originally distributed by Virgin Records but following mergers it was bought by Arista Records and subsequently Kelis was moved to Jive Records. Her manager, Jeff Rhaban explained that "It was a case of being in the ever-shrinking world of the record industry and finding herself on a label she wasn’t signed to and without a champion".^[4] It wasn't until two years later that Kelis began working on the album as an unsigned artist. She recorded much of the songs at her Los Angeles home, in her personal recording studio, in her garage:^[5] Casa De Kelis. Finishing touches were added at Jeepney Studios.^[6] Soon after parting ways with Jive, the singer hinted that she would work with Cee-Lo on releasing a pop music album.^[4]

In December 2009 Kelis released a statement in which she confirmed media reports that she been working with will.i.am on new music and a record deal. She said she was happy to be part of the Interscope family and was looking forward to putting out new music as well as touring for fans who appreciated real music.^[7] She also revealed that for label selection she took a completed album to key labels she thought would be interested in the project and understand its needs. According to the artist there was a lot of interest.^[8] When asked why she chose will.i.am's music label Kelis said "I think that he’s brilliant. As far as this generation goes, there's not a single song that you can bring up to him or a reference or an artist or an era of music that he is not privy to or that he doesn't understand. He's like a musical encyclopedia. It makes it fun. He's not afraid to push the limits and kinda go further than everyone else and that's exciting. He still seems to be having fun doing it and that's what it's all about."^[8] will.i.am. replied: "Kelis represents the kind of edge that pushes all of us not just musically but stylistically as well. She has always opened new doors for her audience and we're ready to walk through this next one with her."^[7]

According to Billboard magazine, who reviewed the upcoming album in January 2010, the project will contain eight songs^[9] although Kelis would later go on to confirm that the final mastered version of the album actually contains nine songs.^[10] The review also spoke of individual songs: "Acapella", helmed by David Guetta, is a tribute to her son; "4th of July", which was produced by DJ Ammo; "Kids", which is inspired by gay club goers and "Carefree American", which is an acoustic-guitar driven number. She also entered the studio with her label boss DJ will.i.am to produce recordings for the album^[9] and according to the second official press release one of his records will appear on the album.^[11] Guetta also contributed another song, "Scream" to the album.^[12] It was also reported that the singer worked with British electropop duo La Roux.^[1] The songs "Alive" (produced by Diplo)^[9] and "Carefree American" produced by Jean Baptiste^[13] are not included on the main standard pressings of the album. The first song on the album is titled "Intro" which Kelis uses to announce "she's gone italo disco". The song has an electrofunk production and bears resemblance to some of David Bowie's early work.^[15] "Scream" is an synthpop^[15] and electro-dance^[16] song with electro-rap^[17] and house music^[18] elements. It was written by Kelis, Jean Baptiste, David Guetta and Roman de Garcez. The production contains a "blade of blues melody [that] slices in atop a rinky-dink sampled piano." It also has "lots of sonic confusingness" as the "song evaporates in the middle ... then reassembles and feeds into a staccato spoken-word electroclash midsection."^[15] Many of the critics stated how the song has split sections, sometimes like "a beat-free beach house piano-based meditation"^[16][18] whilst at other times, sounding like "haughty electroclash ingenue".^[16] The verses are mainly house music whilst the choruses are electronica and have rap music-stylings.^[17] The BBC gave 'Acapella' song a great review and during this described the song being "swept up in a new love, and transformed by the giddy thrill to such a degree that everything that happened before seems drab and gray by comparison". They then added that the track had themes of artist Donna Summer. They added that the track had "astonishing synth-disco amazingness from the '70s".^[19] The song was written and produced with producer David Guetta and it follows themes of Electronic music and has influences from such artist as; Timo Maas, Basement Jaxx, Bjork, and the Crookers.^[20]

Album cover and concept[link]

On March 11, 2010 it was revealed that Kelis was working with British portrait and fashion photographer John "Rankin" Waddell. Rankin has helped fellow British director Chris Cottam to produce the video for the album's lead single, "Acapella" as well as helming the photoshoot for the album's imagery and cover.^[1] Kelis described the album is "something you can get sweaty to" which reflects the "European Club-Scene" sound the album has.^[21]

Promotion and release[link]

On February 26, 2010 Kelis officially premiered the lead single "Acapella" at Eva Longoria's Las Vegas nightclub^[22] as well as performing three new songs from the album.^[23] At the end of March 2010 the promotional tour kicked off starting with an appearance at the Ultra Music Festival during the Winter Music Conference in Miami, Florida where she performed "Acapella" as well as "Spaceship".^[24][25] The latter is a collaboration with Benny Benassi and Apl.de.ap for Benassi's upcoming album. Additionally she performed "Acapella" for the first time on live TV on April 6, 2010 on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.^[26] In the United Kingdom, Kelis promoted the album on GMTV, Later with Jools Holland, Live Lounge and debuted "4th of July" as a single on T4.^[27][28] She is also scheduled to perform at Isle of MTV Malta Special on June 30.^[29]

On June 18, Kelis will perform "4th of July" (the second single from the album) on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Tavis Smiley Show. Kelis performed on The Today Show and 106 and Park on July 6, the album's release date. She is also scheduled to appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on July 13.^[30][31] Kelis was honored and performed at Elle Magazine's "Women in Music" at the Highline Ballroom in New York City on June 9, 2010.^[32] Kelis announced via her Twitter account that herself and Swedish singer Robyn were co-headlining a tour in the U.S. called All Hearts.^[33]

Singles[link]

"Acapella" was released on February 23, 2010 as the album's first single.^[34] It topped the U.S.Hot Dance Club Songs chart^[35] In the United Kingdom the song made its debut at number five on the UK Singles Charts ^[36] and number one on the UK Dance Singles.^[37] In Ireland it made its debut at number 30 and by its fifth week had peaked at number seventeen.^[38] "4th of July (Fireworks)" was released on June 8 in the U.S. as the second single^[39][40] and on July 5, 2010 in the UK.^[41] It debuted at number thirty-nine on the UK Dance Singles chart following strong digital sales.^[42] Additionally on May 28, 2010 the song was added to UK urban music radio's B playlist.^[43] On June 9, 2010 the song was added the C-Playlist on UK Mainstream's Radio 1.^[44] "4th of July" peaked at number four on the U.S. Hot Dance/Club Songs chart but in the UK it peaked at number six on the Dance chart and thirty-two on the main singles chart.

"Scream", produced by David Guetta, is the third single released from the album. Its release will coincide with the European Leg of Kelis' All Hearts tour.^[45] It was to be released on October 4, 2010^[46] in the UK, however was pushed back a week to October 10, 2010. A music video for the song was released on September 28, 2010^[47] On October 5, 2010, Kelis released a 3D version of her Scream music video. This version can be found on her official website.^[48] "Brave" is served as the album's fourth single, according to Kelis.^[49] The video was released on 20 November 2010.^[50] The video shows a still camera of Kelis, wearing a white top with a white background behind her with the camera moving while a large beat is being played. Kelis has also re-recorded the track in 'simlish' for video game The Sims 3: Late Night.^[51] The single was released on January 9, 2011 in the UK.^[52]

Flesh Tone was well received by contemporary critics who, on average, awarded the album 77 out of 100 (based on 16 reviews) according to review aggregator site, Metacritic.^[53] According to the site, many critics responded favorably toward the album's "club-friendly sound" and "ability to sample a wide range of dance music styles while still retaining Kelis’ personality and vision".^[62] Allmusic writer Andy Kellman gave it 4 out of 5 stars and stated "Flesh Tone is a headlong dive into sleek dance-pop ... [yet] it is much more personal than any of her past releases", and praised the album's arrangement, stating that "the setup works because the songs are conjoined and dynamically ordered ... Flesh Tone remains a stylistic outlier, the disc will always be a bright standout in Kelis' discography."^[54] Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian shared a similar sentiment and wrote "As with her previous records, her fifth studio album doesn't sound like anyone else [its] stamped with her unique take on things. Flesh Tone may break no new musical ground, but it's very good."^[56] Spin's Jessica Hopper wrote that Kelis "goes full-tilt house diva" and commended her "husky-voiced, Oprah-esque survivor aphorisms".^[60] Sarah Bee of BBC Online called it a "sensual and exhilarating album" and praised Kelis's performance, stating "Kelis has always been a strong character and a brave musician – this is what carries the album and assures your ears that it’s no out-of-element flounder ... [Her] honey-husky voice slips easily into the hypnotic repetitions of dance music vocalisation."^[18] Digital Spy's Nick Levine gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and stated "Flesh Tone grabs your attention straight away and refuses to let go ... [she] has reinvented herself as a Europoppy dance diva ... It works, and it works wonderfully, because she's committed herself unequivocally [to] a ballad-free, constantly-throbbing bop-til-you-drop dance record joined together by some intriguing segue pieces. [Its a] terrific club-pop record on a humongous high - and an all-natural one at that."^[17]

However, some critics viewed the album's sound as unoriginal and dated.^[62] Johnny Dee of Virgin Media said "Flesh Tone marks a thrilling comeback ... The only complaint is that at 9 tracks it feels a little light."^[63] Slant Magazine's Sal Cinquenmani was more critical of Kelis' direction towards dance music, stating "Her new album, Flesh Tone, sounds dated in the worst kind of way—that is, not enough to sound retro-cool, but enough to sound totally uncool. It helps that the album ... segued together with interludes that are more interesting than the actual songs. Flesh Tone should sound desperate, but it often sounds inspired instead. Kelis seems electrified by her new genre shift, and the result is an album that's one of her most consistent to date."^[59] Kaya Burgess of The Times pointed out that 'Acapella' and 'Home' are the only tracks which "stand out from an otherwise rather copy-and-paste collection of electronic numbers".^[64] Los Angeles Times writer Magaret Wappler expressed that Kelis has managed to "make a spirited but disciplined set of classic Euro-club bangers. Sometimes they're darkly contemplative, slipping into trance; other times they nearly rip at the seams ... it's clear that Kelis has carved out a new niche for herself, dancing in front of the turntables till the lights come on, if they dare."^[57] Sam Richards of Uncut complimented its fusion of "R&B sass to thumping club beats" and stated "'most everything Kelis touches drips with class".^[65] Gavin Haynes of NME felt that "Flesh Tone has already filled out an application form for pop record of the year" and stated "Her ability to appear unimpeachably cool hasn’t wavered either. But these are as nothing. What’s important here is simply her direction: a genuinely innovative bearing that breaks new ground for pop without sounding any less pop for it. Kelis. Genius. Pop auteur."^[15]

damali ayo (born February 26, 1972) is a conceptual artist, author, comedian and performance artist. Her books use satire and humor to engage the reader in an examination of American culture. Her art ranges from assemblage, painting, installation, and solo and participatory performance. She also started a sliding-scale eco-clothing company. She prefers her name in lower case.

Ayo was born in Washington, D.C. and attended Sidwell Friends School. She has a BA from Brown University with a double concentration in Public Policy and American Civilization. She holds a MFA from Portland State University in studio art.

Ayo often claims that her first performance was when she integrated her school's all-white doll collection at the age of four.^[1] While at Brown, ayo was the director of the Women In Prison Project. This community involvement project placed undergraduate women as theatre instructors in the Rhode Island women's correctional facility. Ayo was trained as a leadership and diversity facilitator as a young adult. She worked for the National Conference for Community and Justice, Rhode Island Branch, where she directed youth programs and workshops for adults on race relations. Ayo found traditional diversity work frustrating and slow to generate change. In 1997 Ayo created an art work about an experience she had in seventh grade with a particularly racist teacher.^[2] She realized that, for her, art was the most effective way to encourage people to think about social issues. Her first solo gallery show followed shortly thereafter in 1999.

Conceptual art[link]

Ayo is classified as a conceptual artist because her work does not adhere to one medium, but rather puts the ideas first. She has used performance, painting, sculpture, collage, 3D installation, audio installation, video and web-based media. She also considers her writing a form of art.

One of ayo's most well known works is the web-art-performance rent-a-negro.com.^[3] This satirical web site examines racism in the interactions between black and white people. The site employs parody and satire to engage the viewer in an artificial premise that one could rent a black person for their personal entertainment or to advance their social clout. This work, created in 2003 (the early days of internet art), received over 400,000 hits per day in its first month.

An excerpt from the site reads:

rent-a-negro.com is a state-of-the-arts service that allows you the chance to promote your connection with a creative, articulate, friendly, attractive, and pleasing African American person. This service comes without the commitment of learning about racism, challenging your own white privilege, or being labeled "radical." In fact, rent-a-negro.com allows you to use your money and status to your advantage! In addition, your dollars go to support the development of African American culture...everyone benefits!^[3]

damali also did a popular work where she visited several paint stores and asked to have a paint mixed to match various parts of her body. She recorded the experiences and created a public radio story for Studio 360 about it.^[4]

Much of ayo's work is participatory or web-based. Ayo believes that, "Art should make you think and feel." She thinks that art should reach beyond gallery walls and eschews art that is merely for "decoration." ^[5] She believes that artists' true place is at the forefront of social change movements. To this end, ayo gives grants, to fund and grow artists making the kind of work she values.

In 2005 ayo released How to Rent a Negro.^[6] A satirical guidebook about race relations in the United States was published in 2005. How to Rent a Negro was granted a 2005 Honorable Mention in the Outstanding Book Awards from the Gustavus Meyers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights.^[7] In 2006 How to Rent a Negro was purchased by Coalition Films to be made into a movie.^[8]

In 2010 damali released her second satirical book, Obamistan! Land without Racism: Your Guide to the New America.^[9] It is a humorous exploration of what a post-racism country really could look like, and what domino effect the end of racism would have on the United States as a whole. It proposes that everything from pollution to political prisoners to how food is talked about would change.

Performance[link]

Ayo has created work for the street and stage. An example of one of ayo's participatory performance projects is the 'National Day of Panhandling for Reparations'. This is based on performance work by damali ayo, living flag, where she sits on the street and panhandles for reparations. In this street performance, ayo collects reparations from passing white people and pays them out on the spot to passing black people. The National Day of Panhandling for Reparations annually involves people across the country to repeat ayo's performance in their communities.^[10]

She was one of four co-founders of defunkt theatre, a consensus-based theatre company in Portland, Oregon. While with defunkt, she did acting, assistant directing, dramaturgy, and won two Drammy Awards for Outstanding Set Design ^[11]

Ayo's stage work now combines stand-up comedy, multimedia and stories about her life as a way to educate about racism.^[12]

Radio[link]

Damali ayo's work has been featured on several episodes of Studio 360,^[13] a co-production of Public Radio International and WNYC New York Public Radio. Her radio work "Living Flag: Panhandling for Reparations" won a 2005 Silver Reel Award from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters.^[14] She was a frequent guest commentator on NPR's Weekend America for their "Good News, Bad News, No News" segment.^[15]

Eco living and eco fashion[link]

The July 2008 issue of Redbook Magazine^[16] reported that after a string of terrible on-line dates, ayo redirected her energies to "eco fitting" her house. She maintains a list of eco-living tips on her website.^[17] In November 2007 damali started CROW Clothing, an eco-friendly clothing company that also provided resources on health and social justice. The company closed in November 2008 during the economic downturn. Fashion, evolved, writes the following about damali ayo "Take one gorgeous woman. Add brains, a top-notch education, an enormous heart, and a sense of style--and what do you have? Damali Ayo. Damali is one of those people who is very quietly, very earnestly, and very effectively changing the world.".^[18] damali also founded Black.Brown.Green. a web portal that links social justice and eco-issues. She continues to support the spread of eco-friendly fashion and green living.

Julian Miles "Jools" Holland OBE, DL (born 24 January 1958) is an English pianist, bandleader, singer, composer, and television presenter. He was a founder of the band Squeeze (1974-1980 & 1985-1990) and his work has involved him with many artists including Sting, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, David Gilmour, Magazine and Bono.

Holland is a published author and appears on television shows besides his own and contributes to radio shows. In 2004, he collaborated with Tom Jones on an album of traditional R&B music. He currently hosts Later... with Jools Holland, a music-based show aired on BBC2, on which his annual show Hootenanny, is based.^[1]

Life and career[link]

His great grandfather came from Ireland.^[2]

Holland played as a session musician before finding fame, and his first studio session was with Wayne County & the Electric Chairs in 1976 on their track "F*ck Off."^[3]

Holland was a founding member of the British pop band Squeeze, formed in March 1974, in which he played keyboards until 1981 and helped the band to achieve millions of record sales, before pursuing his solo career.^[3]

Holland began issuing solo records in 1978, his first EP being Boogie Woogie '78. He continued his solo career through the early 1980s, releasing an album and several singles between 1981 and 1984. He branched out into TV, co-presenting the Newcastle-based TV music show The Tube with Paula Yates. Holland achieved notoriety by inadvertently using the phrase "groovy fuckers" in a live, early evening TV trailer for the show, causing it to be suspended for six weeks.^[4] He referred to this in his sitcom "The Groovy Fellers" with Rowland Rivron.

In 1983 Holland played an extended piano solo on The The's re-recording of "Uncertain Smile" for the album Soul Mining. In 1985, Squeeze (which had continued in Holland's absence through to 1982) unexpectedly regrouped including Jools Holland as their keyboard player. Holland remained in the band until 1990, at which point, he again departed Squeeze on amicable terms to resume his solo career as a musician and a TV host.

In 1987, Holland formed The Jools Holland Big Band which consisted of himself and Gilson Lavis from Squeeze. This gradually became his 18-piece Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.^[3]

Between 1988 and 1990 he performed and co-hosted along with David Sanborn during the two seasons of the music performance program Sunday Night on NBC late-night television.^[5] Since 1992 he has presented the music program Later... with Jools Holland, plus an annual New Year's Eve Hootenanny.

In 1996, Holland signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records,^[3] and his records are now marketed through Rhino Records.

Holland has a touring band, The Rhythm And Blues Orchestra, which often includes singers Sam Brown and Ruby Turner. In January 2005 Holland and his band performed with Eric Clapton as the headline act of the Tsunami Relief Cardiff.

Personal[link]

Holland lives in the Westcombe Park area of Blackheath in South East London, where he had his studio, Helicon Mountain, built to his design, inspired by Portmeirion, the setting for the 1960s TV series The Prisoner.^[6] Holland owns costumes and props from the series and occasionally appears wearing the trademark brown-with-white-pipe blazer featured in the series. In 1987, Holland demonstrated his love of the series and starred in a spoof documentary, The Laughing Prisoner, with Stephen Fry, Terence Alexander and Hugh Laurie.^[6] Much of it was shot on location in Portmeirion, with archive footage of Patrick McGoohan, and featuring musical numbers from Siouxsie and the Banshees, Magnum and XTC. Holland performed a number towards the end of the program. His younger brother, Christopher, also plays organ in the Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, as well as being a singer-songwriter.

Holland was an interviewer for The Beatles Anthology TV project, and appeared in the 1997 film Spiceworld as a musical director.

He received an OBE in 2003 in the Queen's Birthday Honours list, for services to the British music industry as a television presenter and musician. In September 2006 Holland was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Kent.^[7] He is also known for his charity work: in June 2006 he performed in Southend for HIV/AIDS charity Mildmay,^[8] and in early 2007 he performed at Wells and Rochester Cathedrals to raise money for maintaining cathedral buildings.^[9] He is also patron of the Drake Music Project^[10] and has raised many thousands of pounds for the charity.

Holland was appointed an Honorary Fellow of Canterbury Christ Church University at a ceremony held at Canterbury Cathedral on 30 January 2009.^[11]

On 29 August 2005 Holland married Christabel McEwen, his girlfriend of 15 years (between 1983 and 1995 she had been married to Edward Lambton, 7th Earl of Durham, before they divorced). The wedding, at St James's Church, Cooling near Rochester, was attended by many celebrities, including Ringo Starr, Robbie Coltrane, Stephen Fry, Lenny Henry, Noel Gallagher, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders.^[12]

Holland is also a patron for The Milton Rooms, an Arts centre in Malton, North Yorkshire, along with Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton and Kathy Burke.^[13]

His 2007 biography, Barefaced Lies and Boogie Woogie Boasts was BBC Radio 4 "Book of the Week" in the week beginning 8 October 2007 and was read by Holland. He is the author or joint author of four other books.
