On appeal from the High Court (England and Wales) (Administrative Division)
This appeal considered whether one party in extradition proceedings can rely substantively on evidence not disclosed to the other. The appellants are the subject of an extradition request issued by the Government of Rwanda. During their extradition proceedings they sought to adduce evidence from witnesses who, asserting that they feared for their safety, were not willing to give evidence if that evidence was disclosed to the Government of Rwanda. The appellants submitted that the judge should devise a common law procedure to permit her to take the evidence on which they wished to rely into account without it being disclosed to the Government of Rwanda. In each case, the District Judge held that she had no power to receive material in private. The subsequent judicial review claim was unsuccessful.
The Supreme Court dismisses the appeal by a majority.

2nd Private Criminal Prosecution - FIRST APPEARANCE WEDNESDAY 15TH AUGUST 2012 AT 10AM
As you'll all know Metropolitan Police officers Sergeant Gareth Blackburn and Detective Constable Stephen MacDonald appeared before Westminster Magistrates Court this Wednesday.... what a morning.
We had a good show of supporters and press were well represented at the hearing, which was simply for the matter to be 'sent' under Sec.51 of the CDA 1998 to Southwark Crown court.
For those who couldn't make it some detail;
The 'brace' of officers attended court with their police federation Rep, they looked chirpy and disinterested despite the press camera's trained on their faces..... things of course would change before the close of the afternoon.
The case was served up infront of Judge Zani in court Room 1 and started promptly at 10am. The case opened with the officers being asked for their name, address and date of birth. When both officers came back with the same address, (the police station) District Judge Zani piped up and demanded that their actual home address were provided as is the usual norm.
Certainly those watching felt this was a clear indication that there was to be no special treatment for these officers who were standing trial.
On the matter of bail, I indicated I wouldn't be requesting remand for the officers but I would ask for conditions to be placed upon bail. I am concerned that as a result of the gravity of the offences there is a flight risk. The Judge denied my application, though was 'thankful' for my submissions.
The morning closed with the Judge bailing the officers and informing them they must attend;

As courts go, Southwark is a lovely court in a really nice part of London. Not far from Traitors gate so the location is pretty apt for events. Please put the date in your diary NOW and show your support on this day. Maybe combine it with a little sight seeing of London?
The hearing is 'Plea and Case Management hearing' so we will get to hear the Police officers plea to the following charges;
- kidnap (max sentence life imprisonment)
- false imprisonment (max sentence life imprisonment)
- aggravated burglary (max sentence life imprisonment)
- burglary (max sentence 14 yrs imprisonment)
- affray (max sentence 3yrs imprisonment)
- Misconduct in public office (max sentence life imprisonment)
Neither officer looked as composed as when they arrived. Indeed their ought to be some pictures kicking about the net as they were followed down the street as they exited court by lots of press people.
Metropolitan Police officers' solicitors
It is worthy of note that these officers have selected the same solicitors that helped Simon Harwood evade culpability in what was clearly a travesty of justice at the Ian Tomlinson trial. (unlawful killing returned at Inquest into Tomlinson's death)
Like the Tomlinson case, video evidence will play a central part in the case. Unlike the Tomlinson case the Crown Prosecution does not have control of the prosecution. It is in my private hands, which seems the best and only sure way to bring the police before a jury.
For sure this case is going to be an interesting case of historic importance.....

The name Westminster originated from the informal description of the abbey church and royal peculiar of St Peter's (Westminster Abbey), literally West of the City of London, indeed until the Reformation there was a reference to the 'East Minster' at Minories (Holy Trinity Priory, Aldgate) east of the City; the abbey was part of the royal palace that had been created here by Edward the Confessor. It has been the home of the permanent institutions of England's government continuously since about 1200 (High Middle Ages' Plantagenet times) and is now the seat of British government.

Julian Assange
Julian Paul Assange (born 3 July 1971) is an Australian computer programmer, publisher and journalist. He is editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks, an organisation which he founded in 2006. Subject to extradition to Sweden for legal proceedings, he was granted political asylum by Ecuador in August 2012. He has remained in Ecuador's London embassy and, as of February 2016, he is unable to leave without expectation of arrest.
In February 2016 a UN panel issued a non-binding legal opinion that Assange had been subject to arbitrary detention and should be allowed to walk free and be given compensation. The findings were rejected by UK and Swedish prosecutors, as well as UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Philip Hammond.
Early life
Assange was born in the north Queensland city of Townsville, to Christine Ann Hawkins (b. 1951), a visual artist, and John Shipton, an anti-war activist and builder. The couple had separated before Assange was born.
When he was a year old, his mother married Richard Brett Assange, an actor, with whom she ran a small theatre company. They divorced around 1979, and Christine Assange then became involved with Leif Meynell, also known as Leif Hamilton, a member of the Australian New Age group The Family, with whom she had a son before the couple broke up in 1982. Assange had a nomadic childhood, and had lived in over thirty different Australian towns by the time he reached his mid-teens, when he settled with his mother and half-brother in Melbourne, Victoria.

The case was served up infront of Judge Zani in court Room 1 and started promptly at 10am. The case opened with the officers being asked for their name, address and date of birth. When both officers came back with the same address, (the police station) District Judge Zani piped up and demanded that their actual home address were provided as is the usual norm.
Certainly those watching felt this was a clear indication that there was to be no special treatment for these officers who were standing trial.
On the matter of bail, I indicated I wouldn't be requesting remand for the officers but I would ask for conditions to be placed upon bail. I am concerned that as a result of the gravity of the offences there is a flight risk. The Judge denied my application, though was 'thankful' for my submissions.
The morning closed with the Judge bailing the officers and informing them they must attend;

2nd Private Criminal Prosecution - FIRST APPEARANCE WEDNESDAY 15TH AUGUST 2012 AT 10AM
As you'll all know Metropolitan Police officers Sergeant Gareth Blackburn and Detective Constable Stephen MacDonald appeared before Westminster Magistrates Court this Wednesday.... what a morning.
We had a good show of supporters and press were well represented at the hearing, which was simply for the matter to be 'sent' under Sec.51 of the CDA 1998 to Southwark Crown court.
For those who couldn't make it some detail;
The 'brace' of officers attended court with their police federation Rep, they looked chirpy and disinterested despite the press camera's trained on their faces..... things of course would change before the close of the afternoon.

So Hello from London! Time for a new destination. This is a city that I haven't visited in almost 4 years. So we're both very excited to be in London. And we're going to be making a little video guide. Actually a really big video guide because we plan on showing you 50 different things to do around London.
Our first stop was Trafalgar Square. This square leads to a lot of central attractions, so it's a nice place to people watch, get your bearings, and plan out where you want to go in the city.
The London Eye is a giant Ferris wheel on the South Bank of the Thames. It offers a bird's eye view of the city.
Buckingham Palace has served as the official London residence for Britain's sovereigns since 1837. The State Rooms at Buckingham Palace are open to visitors every year.
The Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Palace along with Big Ben are two of the top London attractions that dot the city-scape.
The Tower of London sits on the north bank of the River Thames.
And that's a wrap for London! Like with any mega city, it's impossible to cover all the sights and attractions you can enjoy here, but hopefully this video will give you an idea of what London has to offer.
