The city court of Xiamen is hearing the case, and state media says he faces life imprisonment rather than the death penalty. Lai was deported from Canada back to China last year after an 11-year diplomatic struggle. He was immediately arrested and later pleaded guilty to extensive corruption charges. He was accused of running a multi-billion dollar smuggling operation in Xiamen in the 1990s, bribing officials and evading billions of dollars of government taxes. Lai fled to Canada in 1999 and sought asylum. Canada rejected his claim and deported him after assurances from Beijing he would not be tortured or given the death penalty. But the decision was controversial as Lai's accountant and brother both mysteriously died in a Chinese prison and the Canadian court was not given their autopsy reports.

The Catholic Church - the Vatican - was behind the so-called "discovery" of America and the consequent genocide of natives to steal their land. So much so that the Catholic Church's religious order called the Knights of Columbus is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization, named in honor of Christopher Columbus! This video was uploaded by: wahkontonkadahl who also wrote the following: "I recently contacted Tony Castanha, the internationally renowned leader of the movement to influence the Roman Catholic hierarchy to revoke the Papal bull, Inter Caetera. Mr. Castanha is also on the forefront of the movement to put an end to the glorification of Columbus. When I contacted him, I presented the link to my "Protesting The Racist Name Of The Knights Of Columbus" video on youtube. In response he wrote: "It's time to go after these 'Knights' guys...". Because of the instructions Columbus and his knights received from two 15th century Papal bulls they stole the land of the native people they "discovered" in the Caribbean Islands. Where the eurozone crisis heads will depend not on whether Greece leaves the union, but on how the situation in the region affects debt-troubled Italy and Spain, Aleksey Bachurin, head of Russian Cash Equity Trading at Renaissance Capital, told RT. "The important thing is not Greece itself: it's relatively small and the investments in Greece are already written down by most banks. But the potential contagious effect on Italy and especially Spain -- this is a real danger," Bachurin said. Indeed, as the Greek crisis entered a new phase with the country's party leaders failing to form a government, Italian and Spanish borrowing costs surged and banking declined. Late on Monday, Moody's rating agency downgraded the debt rating of 26 Italian banks, including giants UniCredit and Intesa Sanpaolo. Ten of them were lowered to so-called junk status, while some saw their ratings cut by as much as four notches. Meanwhile, Spain announced a consolidation of four major banks aimed at creating a lender with assets of 270 billion euro. Though some European politicians insist the eurozone would survive even without Greece, some economists say it might be the end of the game. The deterioration in Greece could result in "huge withdrawals from Spanish and Italian banks, as depositors try to move their money to Germany," Paul Krugman, renowned US economist, wrote in his column in the New York Times. In this case Germany would be left with two options, according to Krugman. The first would be ...

An unnamed official from a country tracking Iran's nuclear program has provided the Associated Press with a computer generated image said to show an explosives containment chamber located inside Iran's Parchin military complex. According to experts at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, such a chamber is of the type needed for nuclear arms-related tests. IISS Director for Disarmament Mark Fitzpatrick: "What one does inside such a chamber is conducts high explosives testing. You are going to make something go boom with maybe 70 kilograms of high explosives, you need to contain the explosion. And particularly if you are using uranium, which is reportedly the case, you want to contain all the uranium dust so there's not any tell-tale, observable signals of that experimentation." The official who provided the picture has said it is based on information from a person who had seen the chamber at the Parchin military site. The United Nation's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, has long pressed Iran for access to the site, but so far, this has not been granted. The release of the image comes as IAEA officials prepare to meet their Iranian counterparts for talks in Vienna this week. The discussions will be closely watched by the six world powers -- the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany -- who will be holding their own negotiations with Iran in Baghdad on May 23rd. Iran has neither confirmed nor denied the existence of the chamber depicted in the image, though ...

The United Nations is blaming Iran for supplying the Syrian army with weapons. The UN says it has found evidence Iran been organising illegal shipments. Meanwhile, both Russia and the US acknowledge that they are helping the two sides in Syria's internal conflict as well. The implications of this are profound: not only are the two sides on the ground ignoring the terms of the ceasefire, but it also seems that foreign countries - which on paper signed up to the Annan plan and its spirit of demilitarisation - are, in practice and in different ways, both offering supplies which undermine it. Iran would say that makes criticism of it sound a bit hollow. And it also reinforces the idea that Syria has turned into a proxy conflict between Russia on one side, and the self-titled Friends of Syria on the other. Laurence Lee reports.
