Daniel Day (1767 in Mendon Massachusetts – October 26, 1848 at Uxbridge, Worcester County, Massachusetts at age 81) was an American pioneer in woolen manufacturing.

Family

Daniel Day was born in Mendon, MA and was the son of Joseph Day and Deborah Taft. He married Sylvia Wheelock, and they had two sons and two daughters, both born in Mendon up until 1800, (according to the Mendon vital records). He was a 4th generation descendant of the original Taft family in America, Robert Taft, Sr., who had settled in the western section of Mendon in 1679.

Career and history

At the age of 43, Daniel Day established one of the oldest woolen mills in the United States, the Daniel Day Mill. He built a dam along the West River (Massachusetts) and near the dam he built the woolen carding mill. Pliny Earle I, had developed carding machines at Leicester, Massachusetts, near Worcester, as early as the 1780s. Daniel Day's wool carding mill was only the second mill established in the historic Blackstone River Valley, considered a major contributor to the Industrial Revolution in the U.S.

'Elmdale' near Wheelockville, was the site of the ''Daniel Day Mill'', the first textile mill in Uxbridge, the first woolen mill in the valley(1809), the second oldest woolen mill in Massachusetts, (after one in Watertown, MA), the third textile mill in the state, and third oldest woolen mill in U.S. (after a worsted mill in Hartford). This system of mills, dams and villages was developed by John and Samuel Slater, and became known as the Rhode Island System. There was only one other mill, a cotton mill, that was established in Uxbridge that year, which was the Clapp Mill on the Mumford River. His son Joseph, born in 1790, joined the business, along with Jerry Wheelock. Quickly a loom was added to the carding machine works by 1811, and they later greatly enlarged the mill by 1825.

One of Daniel Day's children, his daughter, married Luke Taft, who started another famous Mill in Uxbridge, The Luke Taft Mill, later known as the Waucantuck Mill. Luke Taft was a descendant of the famous American Taft family which had its roots in Mendon and Uxbridge. Daniel Day was also an ancestor of a branch of the Wheelock family which established an early factory continues in business in the 21st Century, as Berroco, Inc, now headquartered in nearby North Smithfield, Rhode Island.

Death and afterwards

The death of Daniel Day is recorded in the Uxbridge Vital Records. It also contains clues about one of his children, and he is listed as a widower, who died on October 26, 1848, of Consumption or Tuberculosis, at the age of 81. This is from page 369 of Uxbridge Vital Records thru 1850. His wife Sylvia Day died in 1842 at the age of 77. His son Peter died in 1815, at age 23.

George Lloyd Murphy (July 4, 1902 – May 3, 1992) was an American dancer, actor, and politician. Murphy was a song-and-dance leading man in many big-budget Hollywood musicals from 1930 to 1952. He was the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1944 to 1946, and was awarded an honorary Academy Award in 1951. Murphy served from 1965 to 1971 as U.S. Senator from California, the first notable U.S. actor to make the successful transition to politics, predating Ronald W. Reagan and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Life and career

He was born in New Haven, Connecticut, of Irish Catholic extraction, the son of Michael Charles "Mike" Murphy, athletic trainer and coach, and the former Nora Long. He was educated at Peddie School, Trinity-Pawling School, and Yale University in his native New Haven. He worked as a tool maker for the Ford Motor Company, as a miner, a real estate agent, and a night club dancer.

In show business

In movies, Murphy was famous as a song-and-dance man, appearing in many big-budget musicals such as ''Broadway Melody of 1938'', ''Broadway Melody of 1940'' and ''For Me and My Gal''. He made his movie debut shortly after talking pictures had replaced silent movies in 1930, and his career continued until he retired as an actor in 1952, at the age of 50.

In 1951, he was awarded an honorary Academy Award. He was never nominated for an Oscar in any competitive category.

He was the president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1944 to 1946. He was a vice president of Desilu Studios and of the Technicolor Corporation. He was director of entertainment for presidential inaugurations in 1953, 1957 and 1961.

Murphy entered politics in 1953 as chairman of the California Republican State Central Committee, having also directed the entertainment for the Eisenhower-Nixon inauguration that same year.

Elected to U.S. Senate

In 1964, he was elected to the Senate, having defeated Pierre Salinger, the former presidential press secretary in the Kennedy White House, who had been appointed several months earlier to serve the remainder of the late Clair Engle's unexpired term. Murphy served from January 1, 1965 to January 3, 1971, and is credited with beginning the United States Senate tradition of the Candy desk. Murphy assumed his seat two days early, when Salinger resigned from the seat in order to allow Murphy to gain an edge in seniority. Murphy was then appointed by Democratic Governor Pat Brown to serve the remaining two days of Salinger's term.

Murphy was in demand for a time to assist other Republican candidates seeking office. In 1966, he came to Georgia to host a fundraising dinner in Atlanta for U.S. Representative Howard "Bo" Callaway in the first gubernatorial campaign undertaken by a GOP candidate since the Reconstruction era. Callaway ultimately lost the election when the state legislature resolved an impasse and chose the Democrat Lester Maddox to fill the position.

In 1967 and 1968, the year Richard M. Nixon was elected as U.S. President, Murphy was the chairman of the Republican National Senatorial Committee. In 1970, Murphy ran unsuccessfully for reelection, having been defeated by Democratic U.S. Representative John V. Tunney, the son of famed heavyweight boxing champion Gene Tunney. During his Senate term, Murphy suffered from throat cancer, forcing him to have part of his larynx removed. For the rest of his life, he was unable to speak above a whisper.

Murphy lost to Tunney, 44.3 to 53.9 percent. He was in his late sixties, and his speaking voice was reduced to a gravelly whisper from throat cancer while Tunney was youthful, energetic, and blatantly comparing himself to the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, largely through haircut and poses on the campaign trail. Murphy's staunch support for the lingering Vietnam War also worked against his reelection. As the general election approached, Tunney overtook Murphy in the opinion polls. Tunney's successful Senate race in 1970 is reportedly the inspiration for the 1972 Robert Redford film The Candidate.

Murphy subsequently moved to Palm Beach, Florida, where he died at the age of eighty-nine from leukemia.

Murphy's move from the screen to California politics paved the way for the successful transitions of actors such as Ronald Reagan and later Arnold Schwarzenegger. Reagan once famously referred to George Murphy as his own John the Baptist.

During his tenure in the Senate, Murphy created the Candy desk by placing a supply of confectionery on his desk on the U.S. Senate floor. After 1971, the candy-desk duties were bequeathed to a string of successors; as of 2011, the keeper of the candy desk is Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican.

In satire

George Murphy was the subject of a 1965 song by satirist Tom Lehrer, who declared in mock vaudeville style: "Oh, gee, it's great, at last we've got a Senator who can really sing and dance." Lehrer also alluded sarcastically to an infamous remark Murphy once made during a debate about the Bracero Program that granted temporary work visas to Mexican migrant farmhands:

Should Americans pick crops? George says no; 'Cause no one but a Mexican would stoop so low. And after all, even in Egypt, the Pharaohs Had to import—Hebrew ''Braceros''.

Murphy had stated that Mexicans were genetically suited to farm labor; because they were "built lower to the ground," it was supposedly "easier for them to stoop." Oddly, some years earlier, in 1949, Murphy himself had starred next to Mexican actor Ricardo Montalban in the film ''Border Incident'', which cast the exploitation of the Braceros in a negative light. Mr. Lehrer further satirized Senator Murphy with the line: "Think of all the musicals we have in store, imagine "Broadway Melody of Nineteen Eighty-Four". Lehrer began the song:

Hollywood's often tried to mix Show business with politics. From Helen Gahagan To. . . ''Ronald Reagan??''

This connection is also referred to by folk singer Phil Ochs on the spoken-word introduction to "Ringing of Revolution", when Ochs describes a fictional film based on that song, and Murphy is played by Reagan. Ochs also imagines that Lyndon Johnson would "play God" and Ochs would "play Bobby Dylan."

Personal life

Murphy was married to his ballroom dancing partner, Juliette "Julie" Henkel-Johnson, from December 18, 1926, until her death in 1973. They had two children, Dennis Michael Murphy and Melissa Elaine Murphy. He was married to Betty Duhon Blandi from 1982 until his death in 1992.

Eleanor Torrey Powell (November 21, 1912 – February 11, 1982) was an American film actress and dancer of the 1930s and 1940s, known for her exuberant solo tap dancing.

Early life

Powell was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. A dancer since childhood, she was discovered at the age of 11 by the head of the Vaudeville Kiddie revue, Gus Edwards. When she was 17, she brought her graceful, athletic style to Broadway, where she starred in various revues and musicals. During this time, she was dubbed "the world's greatest tap dancer" due to her machine-gun footwork, and in the early 1930s appeared as a chorus girl in a couple of early, inconsequential musical films.

Road to Hollywood

In 1935, the leggy, fresh-faced Powell made the move to Hollywood and did a specialty number in her first major film, ''George White's 1935 Scandals'' which she later described as a disaster because she was accidentally made up to look like an Egyptian. The experience left her unimpressed with Hollywood and when she was courted by MGM, she initially refused their offers of a contract. Reportedly, Powell attempted to dissuade the studio by making what she felt were unreasonable salary demands, but MGM agreed to them and she finally accepted. The studio groomed her for stardom, making minimal changes in her makeup and conduct.

Film stardom

She was well-received in her first starring role in 1935's ''Broadway Melody of 1936'' (in which she was supported by Jack Benny and Frances Langford), and delighted 1930s audiences with her endless energy and enthusiasm, not to mention her stunning dancing. According to dancer Ann Miller, quoted in the "making-of" documentary ''That's Entertainment! III'', MGM was headed for bankruptcy in the late 1930s, but the films of Eleanor Powell, particularly ''Broadway Melody of 1936'', were so popular they made the company profitable again. Miller also credits Powell for inspiring her own dancing career, which would lead her to become an MGM musical star a decade later.

Powell would go on to star opposite many of the decade's top leading men, including James Stewart, Robert Taylor, Fred Astaire, George Murphy, Nelson Eddy, and Robert Young. Among the films she made during the height of her career in the mid-to-late 1930s were ''Born to Dance'' (1936), ''Rosalie'' (1937), ''Broadway Melody of 1938'' (1937), ''Honolulu'' (1939), and ''Broadway Melody of 1940'' (1940). All of these movies featured her amazing solo tapping, although her increasingly huge production numbers began to draw criticism. Her characters also sang, but Powell's singing voice was usually (but not always) dubbed. (This would also happen to one of Powell's successors, Cyd Charisse). ''Broadway Melody of 1940'', in which Powell starred opposite Fred Astaire, featured an acclaimed musical score by Cole Porter. Together, Astaire and Powell danced to Porter's "Begin the Beguine", which is considered by many to be one of the greatest tap sequences in film history. According to accounts of the making of this film, including a documentary included on the DVD release, Astaire was somewhat intimidated by Powell, who was considered the only female dancer ever capable of out-dancing Astaire. In his autobiography ''Steps in Time'', Astaire remarked, "She 'put 'em down like a man', no ricky-ticky-sissy stuff with Ellie. She really knocked out a tap dance in a class by herself."

Decline in popularity

Following ''Broadway Melody of 1940'' Powell was sidelined for many months following a gall stone operation and things changed somewhat for the worse, at least as far as Powell's movie career was concerned. 1941's ''Lady Be Good'' gave Powell top billing and a classic dance routine to "Fascinatin' Rhythm", but Robert Young and Ann Sothern were the actual stars of the film. The same happened with Red Skelton in ''Ship Ahoy'' (1942) and ''I Dood It'' (1943), although in ''Ship Ahoy'' her character nonetheless played a central role in the story, and Powell's dance skills were put to practical use when she manages to tap out a morse code message to a secret agent in the middle of a dance routine.

She was signed to play opposite Dan Dailey in ''For Me and My Gal'' in 1942, but the two actors were removed from the picture during rehearsals and replaced by Gene Kelly and Judy Garland. Later, production of a new ''Broadway Melody'' film that would have paired Powell with Kelly was also cancelled.

She parted ways with MGM in 1943 after her next film, ''Thousands Cheer'', in which she appeared only for a few minutes to perform a specialty number (as part of an all-star cast), and the same year married Canadian-born lead actor Glenn Ford. She danced in a giant pinball machine in ''Sensations of 1945'' (1944) for United Artists, but this picture was a critical and commercial disappointment, Powell's performance overshadowed by what was to be the final film appearance of W. C. Fields. Powell retired from the cinema afterwards to concentrate on raising her son, actor Peter Ford, who was born that year (although she did appear in a couple of documentary-style short subjects about celebrities in the late 1940s). Overseas audiences did get to see one additional Powell dance performance in 1946, however, when the compilation ''The Great Morgan'' was released, which included a number that had been cut from ''Honolulu''.

In 1950, Powell returned to MGM one last time for a cameo in ''Duchess of Idaho'', starring Esther Williams. Appearing as herself in a nightclub scene, a hesitant Powell is invited to dance by Van Johnson's character, and she begins with a staid, almost balletic performance until she is chided by Johnson for being lazy. She then strips off her skirt, revealing her famous legs, and proceeds to perform a "boogie-woogie"-style specialty number very similar to the one she performed in ''Thousands Cheer'' seven years earlier. Williams, in her autobiography ''The Million Dollar Mermaid'', writes of being touched, watching Powell rehearsing until her feet bled, in order to make her brief cameo as perfect as possible.

Later career: TV and stage

After ''Duchess of Idaho'', Powell returned to private life. In May 1952, she emerged as a guest star on an episode of ''Four Star Revue'' with Danny Thomas and June Havoc. Around this time, she was ordained a minister of the Unity Church and later hosted an Emmy Award-winning Sunday morning TV program for youth entitled ''The Faith of Our Children'' (1953–1955). Her son, Peter Ford, was a regular on this show and would later find his own success as a rock and roll singer and as an actor. In 1955, Powell made her last-ever film appearance when she appeared in ''Have Faith in Our Children'', a three-minute short film produced for the Variety Club of Northern California in which Powell asked viewers to donate to the charity. The short, which other than its title had no relation to the TV series, marked the only time Powell appeared on screen with Glenn Ford.

Powell divorced Ford in 1959, and that year, encouraged by Peter, launched a highly-publicized nightclub career, maintaining her good figure and looks well into middle age. Her live performances continued well into the 1960s. During the early 1960s she made several guest appearances on variety TV programs, including ''The Ed Sullivan Show'' and ''The Hollywood Palace''.

She made her final public appearance in 1981 at a televised American Film Institute tribute to Fred Astaire, where she received a standing ovation.

Death

Eleanor Powell died February 11, 1982 of cancer at the age of 69, and was interred in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood in the Cathedral Mausoleum, Foyer Niche 432, Tier 3.

Reintroduction

Powell was reintroduced to audiences in the popular ''That's Entertainment!'' documentary in 1974, and its sequels ''That's Entertainment Part II'' (1976) and ''That's Entertainment! III'' (1994) and the related film ''That's Dancing!'' (1985) which spotlight her dancing from films such as ''Broadway Melody of 1940'', ''Lady Be Good'', and ''Born to Dance''. She is one of only a few performers to be the subject of spotlight segments (as opposed to being included in a montage with other performers) in all four films. ''That's Entertainment! III'' is notable for including behind-the-scenes footage of her "Fascinatin' Rhythm" routine from ''Lady Be Good''.

Powell's films continue to be broadcast on television regularly by Turner Classic Movies, with most released in the VHS video format in 1980s and 1990s. North American DVD release of her work has been slower in coming. Aside from clips from her films being included in the aforementioned ''That's Entertainment!'' trilogy, plus clips that were featured in other releases such as the 2002 special edition DVD release of ''Singin' in the Rain'', it wasn't until the 2003 DVD release of ''Broadway Melody of 1940'' that a complete Powell film was released in the format. In February 2007, Warner Home Video announced plans to release a boxed DVD set of Eleanor Powell's musical films by year end. This did not occur; instead, on April 8, 2008 Warner released a third boxed set in the ''Classic Musicals from the Dream Factory'' series, with nine films, four of which star Powell: ''Broadway Melody of 1936'', ''Born to Dance'', ''Broadway Melody of 1938'', and ''Lady Be Good''. The films are expected to be released in individual two film sets (the two ''Broadway Melody'' films in one set, ''Born to Dance''/''Lady Be Good'' on the other) later in the year.

Since 2007 several other Powell films have emerged on DVD, including ''Rosalie'', ''I Dood It'' and ''Sensations of 1945''.

Felicity Kendall Huffman (born December 9, 1962) is an American film, stage, and television actress. She is known for her role as executive producer Dana Whitaker on the ABC television show ''Sports Night'' (1998—2000), which earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination, and as hectic supermom Lynette Scavo on the ABC show ''Desperate Housewives'' (2004—2012), which has earned her an Emmy Award.

In 2005, her critically acclaimed role as a trans woman in the independent film ''Transamerica'' earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination. She has also starred in films such as ''Reversal of Fortune'', ''The Spanish Prisoner'', ''Magnolia'', ''Path to War'', ''Georgia Rule'' and ''Phoebe in Wonderland''.

Early life

Huffman was born in Bedford, New York, the daughter of Grace Valle (née Ewing), an actress, and Moore Peters Huffman, a banker and partner at Morgan Stanley. Her parents divorced a year after her birth, and she was raised mostly by her mother. She has six sisters (Mariah, Betsy, Jane, Grace, Isabel, Jessie) and a brother (Moore Jr.). She attended The Putney School, a private boarding high school in Putney, Vermont and graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan in 1980. After high school she went on to New York University where she graduated in 1984 from Circle In The Square, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drama.

Career

Huffman started her career in theater in the early 1980s. In 1988, she debuted on Broadway in the title role in the formulation Speed the Plow. In the same year, she began her career in film, she starred in the roles of the second plan in the movies ''Things Change'' and ''Lip service''.

In 1991, she played her first leading role on the television mini-series based on the novel by Stephen King's ''Golden Years''. In 1997, she starred in the film ''The Spanish Prisoner''. From 1998 to 2000, she played a lead role in the critically acclaimed series ''Sports Night'', for which she received several awards and nominations, including a ''Golden Globe''.

On television, she starred as Dana Whitaker in the dramedy ''Sports Night'', and has had guest starring roles on ''Frasier'', ''The X-Files'', ''The West Wing'', ''Early Edition'', and ''Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip''. After completion of the show, she gave birth to her first child and returned to work. She starred in a controversial statement about the proximity of women in the Boston Marriage and other theatrical productions. In 2001, she made a pilot of the TV series ''Heart Department'' for the CBS. In 2002, she played Lady Bird Johnson in the HBO movie ''Path to War''. In 2001, she appeared in the made for TV movie ''Snap Decision'' with Mare Winningham. Huffman has appeared in films such as ''Raising Helen'' and ''Christmas with the Kranks''. In 2003, she starred in Showtime's miniseries ''Out of Order''.

Huffman won an Emmy for her work on ''Desperate Housewives'' (Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series), as well as two 2006 Screen Actors Guild Awards (Best Actress - Comedy Series and part of Best Ensemble - Comedy Series). Huffman's performance in the film ''Transamerica'' was praised by many critics and garnered her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress as well as nominations for the Best Actress (Screen Actors Guild) and Best Actress (Academy Awards). Huffman is now a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Huffman is also the co-author of the self-help book, ''A Practical Handbook for the Boyfriend''.

She played in dramedy ''Georgia Rule'' in 2007, and the independent drama ''Phoebe in Wonderland'' in 2008.

Huffman and her husband William H. Macy each received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on March 7, 2012.

She made a film, ''Lesster'', as a writer, director and actress in 2010. In 2012, Huffman plays in the film ''Come Back to Sorrento'' directed by ''David Mamet'', and features in the drama ''Keep Coming Back'' with William H. Macy. A report in November 2010 suggested that Huffman, along with co-star Teri Hatcher, would be quitting ''Desperate Housewives'', but ABC denied the claim.

Personal life

Huffman is married to actor William H. Macy, with whom she has two daughters, Sophie Grace (born August 1, 2000) and Georgia Grace (born March 14, 2002). They married on September 6, 1997. She has appeared on television, in movies, and on stage many times with her husband, on the TV show ''Sports Night'' and in the movie ''Magnolia''.

In 2005, Huffman revealed that she had suffered from both anorexia and bulimia in her late teens and twenties.

Huffman identifies as pro-choice, and has been seen campaigning for women's rights on behalf of NARAL. She also identifies as a Democrat.

2009: In June 2008 it was announced that Felicity Huffman would receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Although announced in June 2008, she is among the list of 2009 recipients. She finally received her star in March 2012 along with her husband in a joint ceremony.

Steve Guttenberg (born August 24, 1958) is an American actor and comedian. He became well known during the 1980s after a series of starring roles in major Hollywood films, including ''Cocoon'', ''Three Men and a Baby'', ''Police Academy'', and ''Short Circuit''.

Early life

Steven Robert Guttenberg was born in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Ann Iris (née Newman), and Jerome Stanley Guttenberg, an electrical engineer. He has two sisters. He had a Jewish upbringing in North Massapequa, New York, where he graduated from Plainedge High School in 1976 (according to some sources, he transferred to New York City's High School of Performing Arts two years before graduating). During high school, he attended a summer program at the Juilliard School where he studied under John Houseman, and he won a role in an off-Broadway production of ''The Lion in Winter''. After his high school graduation, he moved to California to pursue an acting career.

Career

Film

Guttenberg has starred in three film franchises: ''Police Academy'' (1984), ''Cocoon'' (1985), and ''Three Men and a Baby'' (1987). He has also appeared in such renowned films as ''Diner'' (1982), ''The Bedroom Window'' (1987), ''The Boys from Brazil'' (1978), and ''Short Circuit'' (1986).

Guttenberg was seen less during the 1990s. He starred in ''It Takes Two'' (1995) with Kirstie Alley and Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. He also starred alongside Kirsten Dunst in Disney's ''Tower of Terror'' (1997), based on the attraction at the Disney's Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

His first film as director/producer/co-screenwriter/star was ''P.S. Your Cat Is Dead'' (2002), a film adaptation of a novel and Broadway play by James Kirkwood Jr.. He starred in ''Mojave Phone Booth'' (2006) as Barry, and ''Making Change'' as Trafton. In ''Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus'' and its sequel ''Meet the Santas'', he played the starring role of Nick.

During an interview on November 4, 2009, Guttenberg mentioned that Disney was developing a second sequel to ''Three Men and a Baby'', entitled ''Three Men and a Bride''. Guttenberg stated that his co-stars, Ted Danson and Tom Selleck, would return for the sequel. Guttenberg also mentioned how he would like to make another ''Police Academy'' and ''Cocoon'' movie saying they are surefire hits if they were to be made.

In an interview published August 1, 2010, Guttenberg revealed that David Diamond and David Weissman were writing a script for ''Police Academy 8''. Eight-days later, actor Bobcat Goldthwait released a statement urging Hollywood to reboot the ''Police Academy'' series with a new group of actors instead of the original cast members. Goldthwait confirmed that Steve Guttenberg would return and that movie bosses were trying to get Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone to return for an eighth sequel though Goldthwait said he had no desire to return to the series.

Television

Guttenberg's television films include the critically acclaimed ''Miracle on Ice'' (1981), ''To Race the Wind'' (1980), ''Something for Joey'' (1977) and the controversial nuclear holocaust picture, ''The Day After'' (1983). Prior to becoming well known, Guttenberg played the title role in the short-lived 1979 sitcom ''Billy'' as a teenage boy with a Walter Mitty complex. In 1980, a Coca-Cola commercial featured him trying to help a non-English-speaking woman whose car stalled. They share a common bond in their love of Coke. Also in 1980, Guttenberg starred in the Nancy Walker-directed movie ''Can't Stop the Music''—a semi-autobiographical movie about the disco group The Village People.

He had a recurring role on the 2005-2006 season of the television series ''Veronica Mars'' as Woody Goodman, a wealthy businessman and community leader. He appeared as a lead in the NBC made-for-TV remake of ''The Poseidon Adventure'', which aired on November 20, 2005, playing Richard Clarke, a failing writer having an affair with a massage therapist.

Guttenberg took part in the 2008 spring season of ''Dancing with the Stars'' and was eliminated on April 1.

Guttenberg also played himself in an episode of the Starz comedy ''Party Down'' that originally aired May 21, 2010.

Stage

In 1991 he replaced Timothy Hutton in the lead role of ''Prelude to a Kiss'' at the Helen Hayes Theatre on Broadway.

He also performed in London's West End, where he starred in ''The Boys Next Door''. He appeared in the world stage premiere production of ''Furthest From the Sun'', which Woody Harrelson directed and co-authored.

Guttenberg starred in the ''Cinderella'' pantomime at Churchill Theatre in Bromley, England, playing the Baron (father of Cinderella) in 2008. To celebrate Guttenberg's involvement, the local Empire Cinema screened ''Police Academy'' on 19 November. Guttenberg introduced the film and answered questions.

He appeared on Broadway in late 2011 to early 2012 in Woody Allen's one-act play "Honeymoon Hotel" which was part of the show Relatively Speaking.

Video

In 1989 he appeared in the Michael Jackson music video, "Liberian Girl".

On August 25, 2008, Guttenberg released a video entitled "Steve Guttenberg's Steak House" on funnyordie.com.

In early November 2008, allegedly Guttenberg was filmed jogging semi-naked through Central Park, New York. On November 12, Guttenberg appeared as a guest on British Channel 4's ''The Paul O'Grady Show'', he said he made the video for Will Ferrell's Funny or Die website, but then decided to release it virally "as if it were real". As part of challenge set on the show, he then went on to become the Guinness World Record Holder for preparing the most hot-dogs in one minute.

Awards

The sixth-annual Fire Island Golden Wagon Film Festival honored Guttenberg with the 2008 Tony Randall Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in the entertainment industry, as well as his community service efforts. The award was created in tribute to the first Golden Wagon honoree, Tony Randall, and is given to a member of the entertainment industry who embodies the same love of Fire Island, independent spirit, and community service that Randall shared.

On December 12, 2011, Guttenberg received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The star is located at 6411 Hollywood Blvd.

Other work

Guttenberg is involved with charities whose goal is to improve opportunities for the homeless and for young people. He founded Guttenhouse, an apartment complex in South Los Angeles he funded to accommodate young people after their graduation from foster child status, with on-site social worker direction to assist their assuming adult responsibilities. The Entertainment Industry Foundation, Hollywood's charity arm, selected him to be Ambassador for Children's Issues because of his work on behalf of children and the homeless. In this capacity, he spearheads Sight for Students, a $7-million program in which, together with VSP and Altair Eyeglasses, he helps provide glasses for 50,000 underprivileged and visually challenged children throughout their school years. He also supports the Plainedge School District, where he went to high school and often sponsors charity events.

His interest in the welfare of youngsters is reflected in his work as a producer and director. He executive-produced ''Gangs'', a CBS School Break Special which earned an Emmy nomination, and debuted as a director with a CBS School Break Special, ''Love Off Limits'' (1993). Guttenberg's spare time is occupied up by his charitable activities for such kids-oriented agencies as Friends of the Children/Bridges, The Starlight Foundation and the Entertainment Industry Foundation. He is also a surfer, golfer and dog owner.

Guttenberg's production company, "Mr. Kirby Productions", is named after Gerald J. Kirby, his high school drama teacher.

Guttenberg has written a memoir, ''The Guttenberg Bible'', published in May 2012.

Personal life

Guttenberg married model Denise Bixler on September 30, 1988. They separated in June 1991 and were divorced in 1992.
