Adam Richard Sandler (born September 9, 1966) is an American actor, comedian, screenwriter, musician and film producer. After becoming a ''Saturday Night Live'' cast member, Sandler went on to star in several Hollywood feature films that grossed over $100 million at the box office. He is best known for his comedic roles, such as in the films ''Billy Madison'' (1995), ''Happy Gilmore'' (1996), ''The Waterboy'' (1998), ''Big Daddy'' (1999), and ''Mr. Deeds'' (2002), though he has ventured into more dramatic territory. In 1999, Sandler founded Happy Madison, a film and television production company that has produced numerous films and developed the 2007 television series ''Rules of Engagement''.

Adam Sandler was born in Brooklyn, New York to Jewish parents, Stanley, an electrical engineer, and Judy Sandler, a nursery school teacher. When he was five, his family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire, where he attended Manchester Central High School. He found he was a natural comic, and nurtured his talent while at New York University by performing regularly in clubs and on campuses. Sandler graduated from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in 1988.

Later in his career, he would draw on his earliest experiences for material for his comedy, music and movies. The song "Lunchlady Land" from his debut album ''They're All Gonna Laugh at You!'' is dedicated to Emalee, the lunchlady at Hayden Dining Hall at New York University.'''

Acting career [link]

In the mid to late 1980s, Sandler played Theo Huxtable's friend, Smitty, on ''The Cosby Show'' (1987–1988). He was a performer for the MTV game show ''Remote Control'', on which he made appearances as the characters "Trivia Delinquent" or "Stud Boy". Early in his career, Sandler performed in comedy clubs, taking the stage at his brother's urging when he was seventeen. He was discovered by comedian Dennis Miller, who caught Sandler's act in Los Angeles. Miller recommended him to ''Saturday Night Live'' producer Lorne Michaels. Sandler was hired as a writer for ''SNL'' in 1990 and became a featured player the following year, making a name for himself by performing amusing original songs on the show, including "The Chanukah Song". Sandler told Conan O'Brien on ''The Tonight Show'' that NBC fired him and Chris Farley from the show in 1995.

In 1994 he co-starred in ''Airheads'' with Brendan Fraser and Steve Buscemi. He starred in ''Billy Madison'' (1995) as a grown, though uneducated, man repeating grades 1–12 to earn back his father's respect, along with the right to inherit his father's multi-million-dollar hotel empire. In ''At the Movies'', Siskel and Ebert gave the film a very bad review, and said of Sandler "...Not an attractive screen presence, he might have a career as a villain or a fall guy or the butt of a joke, but as the protagonist his problem is he creates the fingernails on the blackboard" with Siskel adding "...you don't have a good motivation for the character's behavior". He followed this film with other financially successful comedies such as ''Bulletproof'' (1996), ''Happy Gilmore'' (1996) and ''The Wedding Singer'' (1998). He was initially cast in the bachelor-party-themed comedy/thriller ''Very Bad Things'' (1998), but had to back out due to his involvement in ''The Waterboy'' (1998), one of his first hits.

Although his earlier films did not receive critical praise, his more recent films, beginning with ''Punch-Drunk Love'' (2002), have received more positive reviews - although they lack even the meagre humour of his earlier films. Roger Ebert, in his review of ''Punch-Drunk Love'', concluded that Sandler had been wasted in earlier films with poorly written scripts and characters with no development. Sandler has moved outside the genre of slapstick comedy to take on more serious parts such as the aforementioned ''Punch-Drunk Love'' (for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe), ''Spanglish'' (2004) and ''Reign Over Me'' (2007). He played a loving father figure in ''Big Daddy'' (1999). During filming, he met Jacqueline Samantha Titone—his future wife and mother of his two daughters -— who was cast as the waitress from The Blarney Stone Bar.

At one point, Sandler was considered for the part that went to Jamie Foxx in ''Collateral'' (2004). He also was one of the finalists along with Jim Carrey and Johnny Depp for the role of Willy Wonka in Tim Burton's ''Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'' (2005). He returned to more dramatic fare with Mike Binder's ''Reign Over Me'' (2007), a drama about a man who loses his entire family in 9/11 and rekindles a friendship with his old college roommate (played by Don Cheadle). He starred in the film ''I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry'' (2007) alongside Kevin James, as a New York City fireman pretending to be gay to keep up an insurance scam so that his best friend's children can have benefits. Sandler headlined ''You Don't Mess with the Zohan'' (2008), a comedy about a Mossad agent who fakes his own death and moves to the United States to become a hair stylist. The film was written by Sandler, ''The 40-Year-Old Virgin'' writer-director Judd Apatow (who was an old roommate of Sandler's when both were starting out), and ''Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog'' creator Robert Smigel, and was directed by ''Happy Gilmore'' director Dennis Dugan.

"Like Will Ferrell, Sandler has layers of tenderness under layers of irony under layers of tenderness—plus a floating anger like Jupiter’s great red spot," wrote David Edelstein of ''New York'' magazine in a review of ''You Don't Mess with the Z''. "Some performers become stars because we can read them instantly, others—like Sandler—because we never tire of trying to get a fix on them."

Sandler starred in ''Bedtime Stories'' (2008), a fantasy film directed by ''Bringing Down the House'' director Adam Shankman, about a stressed hotel maintenance worker whose bedtime stories he reads to his niece and nephew begin to come true. This marked Sandler's first family film and first film under the Walt Disney banner. Keri Russell and English comedian Russell Brand co-starred.

In 2009, Sandler starred in Judd Apatow's third directorial feature ''Funny People''. He played a very successful stand up comedian who finds out he has a terminal illness and he takes a young inexperienced comic, played by Seth Rogen, under his wing. Filming began in October 2008 and finished in January 2009. The film was released on July 31, 2009. At one point, Sandler was in talks to star in Quentin Tarantino's World War II film ''Inglourious Basterds'', which he confirmed, but he did not appear in it due to a scheduling conflict with ''Funny People''. Following the release of ''Funny People'', it, along with ''Punch-Drunk Love'' were cited in the June 2010 announcement that Sandler was one of 135 people (including 20 actors) invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Sandler appeared in ''Grown Ups'', teaming up with Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, and David Spade (all of whom have worked with Sandler before) for a film about five best friends from high school who reunite 30 years later on the July 4 weekend. Other costars include Salma Hayek (playing Sandler's wife), Maria Bello (playing James' wife), and fellow ''SNL'' alumna Maya Rudolph (playing Rock's wife), Colin Quinn, Tim Meadows, and Norm Macdonald. Sandler and ''Dickie Roberts'' scribe Fred Wolf wrote the script and Dennis Dugan directed the film.

Sandler starred in the 2011 film ''Just Go with It'', with Jennifer Aniston, a romantic comedy written by Allan Loeb and Tim Dowling and directed by Dennis Dugan. He played a plastic surgeon who asks his office manager, played by Aniston, to pose as his wife, in order to prove his honesty to his much younger girlfriend, played by Brooklyn Decker. Sandler also provided the voice of a capuchin monkey in Kevin James' ''Zookeeper'', released on July 8, 2011. He filmed ''That's My Boy'' with Andy Samberg, which tells the story of a man, played by Sandler, who fathered a son, played by Samberg, with his teacher in high school. Then years later, visits his son on the eve of his wedding where he clashes with the bride (played by Leighton Meester).

Sandler formed his film production company, Happy Madison Productions, in 1999, first producing fellow ''SNL'' alumnus Rob Schneider's film ''Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo''. Happy Madison has produced all of Sandler's subsequent films to date with the exceptions ''Punch Drunk Love'' and ''Spanglish''. ''Reign Over Me'' and ''Funny People'' were produced by Happy Madison but under the subsidiary label "Madison 23".

Sandler is known for consistently working with a core group of friends and associates through Happy Madison, frequently casting fellow ''SNL'' performers in various roles in his films. Sandler and Happy Madison produced ''SNL'' contemporary Rob Schneider's vehicles ''Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo'' (1999), ''The Animal'' (2001), ''The Hot Chick'' (2002), and ''Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo'' (2005), and ''The Benchwarmers'' (2006), with Sandler making cameo appearances in the middle three. Meanwhile, Schneider has appeared in cameo roles in Sandler films ''The Waterboy'', ''Little Nicky'', ''Mr. Deeds'', ''Click'', ''The Longest Yard'', ''I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry'', and ''Bedtime Stories''. In October 2009, it was announced that Sandler and Happy Madison will produce the Richard Pryor biopic ''Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?'' for Sony, the company's first major dramatic production. The film was written by Bill Condon, who is set to direct, and Pryor will be played by Marlon Wayans, who is replacing Eddie Murphy.

On June 22, 2003, Sandler married actress Jacqueline Samantha Titone, and they are the parents of two daughters, Sadie Madison Sandler (born 2006) and Sunny Madeline Sandler (born 2008). Sandler lives with his family in Los Angeles, but also owns homes in New York City and Florida.

In 2007, Sandler made a $1 million donation to the Boys and Girls Club in his hometown, Manchester, New Hampshire. He donated $2,100 to Republican Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign the same year.

Ari Marcopoulos (born 1957) is an Amsterdam-born photographer and filmmaker, living and working in New York and California. As a photographer, film artist and adventurist, Marcopoulos, who began his career in New York City assisting Andy Warhol, transplants himself into the intimate lives of people living on the edge. Artists, snowboarders, musicians and skateboarders have been both muses and commercial subject-matter throughout his quarter century career as a photographer. His stunning landscapes and playful portraiture offer a dramatic take on every day life, and a glimpse into all things awesome. The Berkeley Art Museum presented Marcopoulos’s first mid-career survey in the United States in 2010.

Adam Pascal (born October 25, 1970) is an American actor and singer known for his performance as Roger Davis in the original cast of Jonathan Larson's musical ''Rent'' on Broadway 1996, the 2005 movie version of the musical, and the Broadway Tour of ''Rent'' in 2009. He is also known for originating the role of Radames in Elton John and Tim Rice's ''Aida'' and for playing the Emcee from the 1998 revival of ''Cabaret''.

Early life and stage work[link]

Pascal was born in The Bronx, New York and grew up in Woodbury, Nassau County, New York, with his mother and stepfather, Wendy and Mel Seamon. He was raised Jewish.He graduated from Syosset High School. Before his interest in music, he was a personal trainer. Although he began as a rock musician playing in a number of bands (such as Mute) formed with his schoolmates, Pascal became drawn to the musical theater. A friend of his from high school mentioned ''Rent'' to him. On a whim, he auditioned and was cast as the HIV positive rock guitarist Roger Davis. His powerful tenor voice and his performance in ''Rent'' earned him a Tony nomination, a Theater World award, and an Obie Award. He left the show on November 2, 1997, but went on to reprise Roger when ''Rent'' opened in London.

The role helped Pascal gain fame on Broadway, and he was cast in the Elton John and Tim Rice musical ''Aida'' as the Egyptian general Radames with the original and final casts (former ''Rent'' castmate Idina Menzel would co-star as Amneris in 2001), and Kander and Ebb's ''Cabaret'', closing the show as the Emcee (closing cast). He also participated in several charity performances, including ''Chess'' in 2003 (playing the American, Freddie Trumper), ''Hair'' in 2004 (singing "I Got Life"), and the ''24 Hour Plays'' in 2005. He returned to ''Aida'' in 2004 to close the run of the show as Radames.

Along with original Broadway ''Rent'' cast member Anthony Rapp (Mark Cohen), Pascal returned to Broadway to star as Roger in ''Rent'' from July 30 to October 7, 2007. In January 2009, he and Rapp reprised their originating (and film) roles as Roger and Mark in another ''Rent'' tour titled: ''"Rent: The Broadway Tour"'', which played in many cities in the North America, as well as stops in Japan and South Korea. At the tour's Detroit, Michigan stop in February, Pascal suffered two herniated discs in his neck and was on medical leave for a week. Cary Shields, an understudy and also a Broadway ''Rent'' veteran, filled in. Pascal made a full recovery and finished up the tour in early 2010. This tour closed on February 7, 2010.

Pascal reprised the role of Frederick Trumper, aka "Freddie, The American" in the London concert version of ''Chess'' at the Royal Albert Hall on May 12–13, 2008. His ''Rent'' and ''Aida'' co-star Idina Menzel played the role of Florence. This performance was recorded; it has been televised, first on American and British television on June 17, 2009, and repeatedly in America on PBS stations as part of that network's "Great Performances" series; and has been released on DVD.

Pascal joined the Broadway Cast of Memphis (musical) on October 25, 2011 as Huey Calhoun. He replaced original cast member Chad Kimball in the role.

Pascal felt that he was looked upon solely as a Broadway singer, and thus returned to his rock and roll roots with a solo recording contract on Sh-K-Boom Records, which was founded by his ''Aida'' costar, Sherie Rene Scott and her husband Kurt Deutsch. He has released two solo rock albums, ''Model Prisoner'' (2000), ''Civilian'' (2004), as well as a collaborative rock album ''Blinding Light'' (2008) with pianist, Larry Edoff. He also contributed a cover of Billy Joel's "New York State of Mind" to the CD ''Broadway Cares: Home for the Holidays'' (2001), the end credits song, "Winter Light", from the movie ''Noel'' (2004), and the song "Perfect Place" on the album ''Listen'' which showcases songs written by adolescents who stutter (2009). In School of Rock, he played Theo, lead singer of the band No Vacancy, and sang on two songs on the soundtrack.

On July 4, 2006, Pascal took part in the Macy's Fourth of July Celebration. He sang during the traditional fireworks display. He also took part in both the fifth and tenth anniversary celebrations of ''Rent'' on Broadway in 2000 and 2005, respectively.

Pascal formed the band "Me and Larry (Edoff)" in 2006. The two musicians began composing and performing original material and reworked Broadway songs in small venues throughout the US. Pascal won the 2007–2008 Golden Icon Award for Best Small Venue Concert. The band's first CD, ''Blinding Light'', was released in May 2008 on Pascal's own label. The CD is available at concerts and through Amazon and the band's website (where a direct digital download is available).

In 2008, Pascal recorded a ballad entitled "Eva Wanted" with Broadway veteran and recording artist Maya Days. Pascal and Days co-starred in ''Aida'' on Broadway in 2000. Days is also a veteran of ''Rent'' on Broadway and in the UK, as well as the first National Tour, playing Mimi.

As of 2009 and later, Pascal is developing a theatrical stage version of the classic 1988 concept album, ''Operation: Mindcrime'' by the prograssive metal band, Queensrÿche. The band is one of Pascal's musical influences, and has fully endorsed his efforts.

Film work[link]

Pascal made his film debut in ''SLC Punk!'' (1999), and also appeared in ''School of Rock'' (2003) and ''Temptation'' (2004). The audio for ''Temptation'', a musical, was recorded live on set during filming.

In late 2005, he, along with five others of the principal cast, reprised their roles in the film version of ''Rent'', directed by Chris Columbus. Pop idol Justin Timberlake campaigned heavily to Columbus and the producers for the role of Roger, but Columbus insisted that only the original cast members could convey the true meaning of ''Rent''. The film released on November 23, 2005.

In the independent movie ''Falling Star'' (formally titled ''Goyband''), Pascal stars as a former boy-band icon who is booked to play a show at a Kosher hotel, but ends up shocking the guests with his sexy show. Fans were invited to participate in the movie as extras for the concert scenes. His co-stars are Amy Davidson, Cris Judd, Tovah Feldshuh, Dean Edwards, Tibor Feldman and Natasha Lyonne. ''Goyband'' originally premiered at the Jerusalem Films Festival in December 2008. Its North America premiere was July 2009, on Long Island. The movie was bought by distributor, MarVista Entertainment, which retitled it ''Falling Star''.

Pascal has also completed filming for another independent movie, ''American Primitive'', about a gay couple who try to hide their relationship from family and neighbors in 1973, a few years following the Stonewall Riots.

Disney had been planning a major motion picture adaptation release of ''Aida'' in 2010. According to Jim Hill Media, Beyoncé Knowles was in talks with Walt Disney Studios to star in the title role alongside Christina Aguilera as Amneris. It was unknown if Pascal would be asked to play his familiar role of Radames in this adaptation. However, no further reports of the adaptation's production have surfaced since.

Pascal had a guest role as Dennis Hofferman, a murder victim, on an episode of ''Cold Case'', with Tracie Thoms, his co-star from the film version of ''Rent'', and Laura Bell Bundy, another Broadway star who originated the role of Elle Woods in ''Legally Blonde''. The episode, called "Willkommen", originally aired on April 2, 2006, and revolved around an amateur production of ''Cabaret''.

Pascal provided the narration and sang a song in the double-length episode "Tale of the Mighty Knights" for the show ''The Backyardigans''. The song is called "I'm Not an Egg Anymore", and is the final song of the episode.

Personal life[link]

On December 19, 1998, Pascal married Cybele Chivian, daughter of Eric S. Chivian, M.D., Director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School and 1985 Nobel Prize winner. They have two sons, Lennon Jay (born October 2001) and Montgomery Lovell (born February 2004).

Adam Whitney Savage (born July 15, 1967) is an American industrial design and special effects designer/fabricator, actor, educator, and co-host of the Discovery Channel television series ''MythBusters''. His model work has appeared in major films, including ''Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones'' and ''The Matrix Reloaded''. He is a prominent member of the skeptic community. He lives in San Francisco with his twin sons and wife, Julia.

Early life and education [link]

Born in New York City, Savage was raised in Sleepy Hollow in Westchester County New York. He graduated from Sleepy Hollow High School in 1985. His father, Whitney Lee Savage (1928-1998), was a painter, filmmaker and animator known for his work on ''Sesame Street'', and has a permanent exhibit in the Avampato Discovery Museum. His mother is a psychotherapist. His sister Kate Savage is also an artist. As a teenager in Sleepy Hollow, he routinely visited the local bike shop to have flat tires fixed. The shop showed him how to do the repairs himself. From this experience, Savage said, "I realized you could take a bike apart and put it back together and it wasn't that hard...I've been building and putting bicycles together since then."

Adam Savage began acting as a child, and has had five years of acting school. His early credits include voicing animated characters that his father produced for ''Sesame Street'', Mr. Whipple's stock boy "Jimmy" in a Charmin commercial, a helper in the special effects of ''Star Wars'', and a drowning young man saved by a lifeguard in the 1985 Billy Joel music video "You're Only Human (Second Wind)." He attended New York University's Tisch School of the Arts for acting for six months before dropping out.

Describing the early abandonment of his acting career, Savage said "...by the time I was, I guess probably nineteen, I had passed on that in favor of doing stuff with my hands – graphic design, assistant animation in New York, and then eventually working in theater in San Francisco, and film special effects. Then ''MythBusters'' came along and it was the perfect marriage of two things, performance and special effects." On November 25, 2011, Savage received an honorary doctorate from the University of Twente (Enschede, Netherlands) for his role in the popularization of science and technology.

Career[link]

Savage has worked as an animator, graphic designer, carpenter, projectionist, film developer, television presenter, set designer, toy designer, and gallery owner. He worked as a model maker on the films ''Galaxy Quest'', ''Bicentennial Man'', ''Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones'', ''The Matrix Reloaded'', and ''Space Cowboys'', among others.

Savage played the role of a helpful engineer in the 2001 film ''Ever Since the World Ended'' and the role of an army surplus store owner who sells a man a rocket engine for his pickup truck in 2006 in ''The Darwin Awards'', which also featured ''MythBusters'' co-star Jamie Hyneman. He made a cameo appearance along with Jamie Hyneman on ''CSI: Crime Scene Investigation'' on the May 1, 2008, episode "The Theory of Everything." In the "making of" material for ''The Matrix Revolutions'', he appears in his role as a special effects artist and discusses some of the miniature effects used and the difficulties involved.

He previously taught advanced model making in the department of Industrial Design at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Savage has become a regular presenter at magician James Randi's annual skeptics' conference, The Amaz!ng Meeting, since first appearing in January 2006. He also appeared in the UK, giving a talk at the first Amazing Meeting London from October 3–4, 2009, hosted at the Mermaid Conference Centre, Blackfriars.

Savage was a featured performer at the three w00tstock v1.x shows in 2009, and appeared in four w00tstock v2.x shows in 2010. He also appeared as a guest on Diggnation's 220th show.

Savage has also been a regular guest speaker at the annual Maker Faire since 2008, speaking on different topics such as his obsession with the dodo bird and problem solving, and also taking questions from the audience members about the ''Mythbusters'' and other things.

Savage hosted an episode of the Discovery Channel series ''Curiosity'', in which he speculated as to whether or not it is possible for humans to live forever. During the program various topics such as limb regeneration, organ printers, and even age reversal are discussed.

Savage and Hyneman are judges on the game show ''Unchained Reaction'' which premiered in March 2012.

''MythBusters''[link]

Savage has been involved in ''MythBusters'' since its creation. His role in the show (that he shares with all the other talent) is to either disprove ("bust") myths or confirm them through testing and experiments done at different scales. If the myth is about a one-time occurrence and not about whether or not something can happen at all, it is often deemed "plausible" instead.

Savage's demeanour on ''MythBusters'' is animated and energetic, providing a foil to Jamie Hyneman's more reserved straight man persona.

Savage and Hyneman were the only hosts of the show for the first season of ''MythBusters'', but starting with the second season, members of Hyneman's staff were introduced and began to appear regularly in episodes; Kari Byron, Tory Belleci and welder Scottie Chapman appeared in the second season. In the third season, Chapman was replaced by Grant Imahara, a robot builder and model maker. In an interview Savage gave during ''The Amaz!ng Meeting 5'', he expressed an interest in proving natural selection over creationism on ''MythBusters''.

Savage also stated that such an episode is unlikely because ''MythBusters'' has a policy against trying to disprove supernatural phenomena.

Personal life[link]

Savage and his wife Julia were married in 2002. He has twin sons from a previous relationship. He wears a hearing aid on his left ear due to a congenital condition. He is a practiced juggler, as seen on ''Mythbusters''. He is also an atheist. He has a lifelong interest in costume making. He said, "I remember my mom getting me a 'Jaws' costume when 'Jaws' came out...and wearing a Batman costume. Back then, everyone dressed up as hobos." He strives for authenticity with his costumes. While in high school, he and his father made a suit of armor out of aluminum roof flashing that had 700 rivets. He said, "I wore it to school and passed out from heat exhaustion in math class. I woke up in the nurse's office and the first thing I said was 'Where's my armor'?" In 2011, he built a costume based on the character No-Face from the film ''Spirited Away''. In early 2012, it was announced that he would be the commencement speaker at Sarah Lawrence College.
