Stephen Frears's "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid" : Shashi Kapoor, Clair Bloom
Stephen Frears's "Sammy and Rosie Get Laid" : Shashi Kapoor, Clair Bloom
Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987) Stephen Frears's second collaboration with screenwriter Hanif Kureshi. The mileu is similar to "My Beautiful Laundrette" but the anger is much more palpable. The British empire reduces to a shadow of its former self confronts multi-racial and mult-cultural tsunami. Shashi Kapoor, is the corrupt Pakistani's politician with blood on his hands (are there any other types of Pakistani Politicians?) looking for redemption in his "beloved" England. His estranged son, with his bleeding heart liberal wife alternately humor and humiliate him. The screenwriting is several notches below "My Beautiful Laundrette", but the anger, multicultural energy and unabashed left wing politics sustain the film. Clair Bloom and Frances Barber give thrilling performances.

Cheri, first published in 1920, is considered Colette's finest novel. Exquisitely handsome, spoilt and sardonic, Cheri is the only son of a wealthy courtesan, a contemporary of Lea, the magnificent and talented woman who for six years has devoted herself to his amorous education. Cheri has now been adapted to film, directed by Stephen Frears, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Rupert Friend and Kathy Bates.

On August 31, 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales died in an auto accident in Paris; despite the controversial breakup of her marriage to Prince Charles, she was still one of the most famous and best-loved women in the world, and the public outpouring of emotion over her passing was immediate and intense. However, given the messy circumstances of Diana's breakup with Charles, official spokespeople for the Royal Family were uncertain about how to publicly address her passing. It didn't take long for the media to pick up on the hesitation of Buckingham Palace to pay homage to Diana, and many saw this as a sign of the cool emotional distance so often attributed to the royals, which in this case was widely seen as an insult against Diana and the many people who loved her. Prime Minister Tony Blair (played by Michael Sheen) saw a potential public-relations disaster in the making ...

John Malkovich - 1988 Dangerous Liaisons Trailer
John Malkovich - 1988 Dangerous Liaisons Trailer
Dangerous Liaisons is a 1988 drama film based upon Christopher Hampton's play, Les liaisons dangereuses, which in turn was a theatrical adaptation of the eighteenth-century French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Director Stephen Frears, having enjoyed successes in British cinema with My Beautiful Laundrette (1985), Prick Up Your Ears (1987) and Sammy and Rosie Get Laid (1987), made his Hollywood début with this film.[1] The performances of Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, the cinematography of Philippe Rousselot, the costume design by James Acheson, and in particular the screenplay by Christopher Hampton, garnered considerable critical acclaim. Swoosie Kurtz and Mildred Natwick (in her final film) appeared in supporting roles, as did young relatively unknown actors Keanu Reeves and Uma Thurman, both of whom would go on to achieve fame in the 1990s, with starring roles in Speed (1994) and Pulp Fiction (1994) respectively. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture and a further six Oscars, eventually winning the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design, and Best Art Direction.

Tamara Drewe Trailer - Tamara Drewe Movie Trailer
www.blockbuster.co.uk Stephen Frears' TAMARA DREWE will open in cinemas throughout the UK on 10th September 2010 through Momentum Pictures. Filled with lust and humour and starring Gemma Arterton (Prince of Persia, Disappearance of Alice Creed) as the eponymous Tamara, the film is based on Posy Simmonds' well-loved graphic novel, which in turn was inspired by Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd. British stars Dominic Cooper (An Education, Mamma Mia!), Tamsin Greig (Cuckoo, Sean of the Dead), Roger Allam (The Queen, The Wind that Shakes the Barley) and Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans, Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll) make up the supporting cast alongside Bill Camp (Public Enemies, Reservation Road). The film is directed by Stephen Frears (The Queen, Mrs Henderson Presents) and is a Ruby Films Production, produced by Alison Owen (The Other Boleyn Girl, Elizabeth) Tracey Seaward (The Constant Gardener, The Queen) and Paul Trijbits. Tamara Drewe's childhood home is being sold, and her return to the rural Dorset village where she grew up causes something of a stir. Having left as an awkward teenager she returns as a smouldering femme fatale with a glamorous job and a new nose, kicking up a storm of envy, lust and gossip wherever she goes. Torn between two lovers Tamara is the ultimate modern girl but her story of love and confusion is timeless.
