A moth is an insect closely related to the butterfly, both being of the order Lepidoptera. Moths form the majority of this order; there are thought to be 150,000 to 250,000 different species of moth (about ten times the number of species of butterfly), with thousands of species yet to be described. Most species of moth are nocturnal, but there are crepuscular and diurnal species.

Differences between butterflies and moths

Moths are not easily differentiated from butterflies. Sometimes the name "Heterocera" is used for moths while the term "Rhopalocera" is used for butterflies to formalize the popular distinction; these, however, have no taxonomic validity. Many attempts have been made to subdivide the Lepidoptera into groups such as the Microlepidoptera and Macrolepidoptera, Frenatae and Jugatae, or Monotrysia and Ditrysia. Failure of these names to persist in modern classifications is because none of them represents a pair of "monophyletic groups". The reality is that butterflies are a small group that arose from within the "moths" (being considered as part of ''Ditrysia'' of the Neolepidoptera). There is thus no way to group all of the remaining taxa in a monophyletic group, as it will always exclude that one descendant lineage. Also, both their larvae are similar to coleoptera larvae (beetle).

Etymology

The Modern English word "''moth''" comes from Old English "''moððe''" (cf. Northumbrian "''mohðe''") from Common Germanic (compare Old Norse "''motti''", Dutch "''Mot''" and German "''Motte''" all meaning "''moth''"). Perhaps its origins are related to the Old English "''maða''" meaning "''maggot''" or from the root of "''midge''" which until the 16th century was used mostly to indicate the larva, usually in reference to devouring clothes.

The study of butterflies and moths is known as lepidoptery, and biologists that specialize in either are called lepidopterists. As a pastime, watching butterflies and moths is known as butterflying and mothing. The latter has given rise to the term "mother" for someone who engages in this activity - sometimes written with a hyphen (moth-er) to distinguish it from the more common word of the same spelling. This confusion does not arise in speech as it is pronounced differently (, not ).

Caterpillar

Some moth caterpillars dig holes in the ground, and they will live in the hole until they are ready to turn into a fully grown moth.

Economic significance of moths

Moths, and particularly their caterpillars, are a major agricultural pest in many parts of the world. Examples include corn borers and bollworms. The caterpillar of the gypsy moth (''Lymantria dispar'') causes severe damage to forests in the northeast United States, where it is an invasive species. In temperate climates, the codling moth causes extensive damage, especially to fruit farms. In tropical and subtropical climates, the diamondback moth (''Plutella xylostella'') is perhaps the most serious pest of brassicaceous crops.

Several moths in the family Tineidae are commonly regarded as pests because their larvae eat fabric such as clothes and blankets made from natural proteinaceous fibers such as wool or silk. They are less likely to eat mixed materials containing artificial fibers. There are some reports that they can be repelled by the scent of wood from juniper and cedar, by lavender, or by other natural oils. However, many consider this unlikely to prevent infestation. Naphthalene (the chemical used in mothballs) is considered more effective, but there are concerns over its effects on human health. Moth larvae may be killed by freezing the items which they infest for several days at a temperature below .

Some moths are farmed. The most notable of these is the silkworm, the larva of the domesticated moth ''Bombyx mori''. It is farmed for the silk with which it builds its cocoon. , the silk industry produces over 130 million kilograms of raw silk, worth about 250 million U.S. dollars, each year. Not all silk is produced by ''Bombyx mori''. There are several species of Saturniidae that are also farmed for their silk, such as the Ailanthus moth (''Samia cynthia'' group of species), the Chinese Oak Silkmoth (''Antheraea pernyi''), the Assam Silkmoth (''Antheraea assamensis''), and the Japanese Silk Moth (''Antheraea yamamai'').

The mopane worm, the caterpillar of ''Gonimbrasia belina'', from the family Saturniidae, is a significant food resource in southern Africa.

Despite being notorious for eating clothing, most moth adults do not eat at all. Most like the Luna, Polyphemus, Atlas, Prometheus, Cercropia, and other large moths do not have mouths. When they do eat, moths will drink nectar.

Attraction to light

Moths frequently appear to circle artificial lights, although the reason for this behavior remains unknown. One hypothesis advanced to explain this behavior is that moths use a technique of celestial navigation called transverse orientation. By maintaining a constant angular relationship to a bright celestial light, such as the Moon, they can fly in a straight line. Celestial objects are so far away, that even after travelling great distances, the change in angle between the moth and the light source is negligible; further, the moon will always be in the upper part of the visual field or on the horizon. When a moth encounters a much closer artificial light and uses it for navigation, the angle changes noticeably after only a short distance, in addition to being often below the horizon. The moth instinctively attempts to correct by turning toward the light, causing airborne moths to come plummeting downwards, and resulting in a spiral flight path that gets closer and closer to the light source.

It has been suggested that the reason for moths circling lights may have to do with a visual distortion called a Mach band. The theory says that in the pursuit of cover and safety, moths fly towards the dark areas of the sky and are thus inclined to circle ambient objects in the Mach band region. The celestial navigation theory should cause moths to circle lights, not to head directly toward them, as many are seen to do. Mach conjectures that moths, which are nocturnal creatures, must find a place to hide from predators when daylight comes, but cannot do so in darkness. Their instinct when morning comes is to fly toward the light (presumably up) and then down again, with some probability of landing on a surface which matches their camouflage.

A theory which has been advanced in an attempt to explain the attraction male moths have for candles specifically is based on olfaction. There is evidence that olfaction might be, in some cases, mediated by detection of the infra-red spectra of substances. The spiky infrared spectra of a candle flame happens to contain a number of emission lines which coincide with the vibrational frequencies of the female moth's pheromone. The male moth is thereby powerfully attracted to the flame. Other sources with different spike patterns, e.g. hurricane lamps, are less powerful attractants.

Predators and parasites of moths

Nocturnal insectivores often feed on moths; these include some bats, some species of owls and other species of birds. Moths are also eaten by some species of lizards, cats, dogs, rodents, and some bears. Moth larvae are vulnerable to being parasitized by Ichneumonidae.

Baculoviruses are parasite double-stranded DNA insect viruses that are used mostly as biological control agents. They are members of the Baculoviridae, a family that is restricted to insects. Most baculovirus isolates have been obtained from insects, in particular from Lepidoptera.

There is evidence that ultrasound in the range emitted by bats causes flying moths to make evasive maneuvers because bats eat moths. Ultrasonic frequencies trigger a reflex action in the noctuid moth that cause it to drop a few inches in its flight to evade attack. Tiger moths also emit clicks which foil bats' echolocation.

Mottephobia

Mottephobia is the fear of moths. The origin of the word motte is German (meaning moth) and phobia is Greek (meaning fear). As with all things considered phobias this is an irrational fear or hatred, in this particular case it is of moths. This is not a very common phobia.

Kieran Hebden (born 1980, Putney, London, England, United Kingdom) is a post-rock and electronic musician. Hebden first came to prominence as a member of the band Fridge before establishing himself as a solo artist under the moniker of Four Tet.

Hebden's music typically eschews the traditional pop song format in favour of a more abstract approach — his sound and melodies incorporate elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk music with live instrumentation.

Alongside recording his own material, Hebden has also performed remixes for a number of artists including Aphex Twin, Anti-Pop Consortium, Bonobo, Beth Orton, Explosions in the Sky, Super Furry Animals, Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, Matthew Dear, Sia, Nathan Fake, Bloc Party, Andrew Bird, Kings of Convenience, Battles, Juana Molina, Madvillain, The xx, Foals, and Black Sabbath, as well as producing two albums by psychedelic improvisational group Sunburned Hand of the Man. Hebden's recent output includes a number of improvisational works with the late jazz drummer Steve Reid and collaborations with both Burial and Thom Yorke.

History

Kieran Hebden was born in London to a South African-born Indian mother and a sociology lecturer father. He attended Elliott School in Putney, where he formed the band Fridge with classmates Adem Ilhan and Sam Jeffers. The band signed a recording contract when Hebden was 15, and released their first album in March 1997.

Hebden began releasing material as Four Tet in 1998 with the 36 minute, 25 second single ''Thirtysixtwentyfive'' on Trevor Jackson's Output Recordings label. Later that year, he released a second single, the jazz-influenced "Misnomer". 1999's ''Dialogue'', again on Output, was Four Tet's first full-length album release and fused hip hop drum lines with dissonant jazz samples. This was followed by the double A-side single "Glasshead"/"Calamine", which was to be Four Tet's last release on Output.

In late 1999, Warp Records released ''Warp 10 + 3: Remixes'', a tenth-anniversary compilation of remixes of Warp tracks; Hebden contributed a remix of the opening track of Aphex Twin's ''Selected Ambient Works Volume II''. This relatively high-profile exposure attracted new interest in Four Tet from fans of electronica and intelligent dance music, genres in which the Warp brand has a preeminent status.

In 2001, Four Tet's second album ''Pause'' was released on Domino Records and found Hebden using more folk and electronic samples, which was quickly dubbed "folktronica" by the media and press in an attempt to label the style (often also applied to artists such as Isan and Gravenhurst). ''Rounds'' was released in May 2003. Three singles were released from the album: "She Moves She", "As Serious as Your Life", and "My Angel Rocks Back and Forth". This last single was released as an EP featuring remixes by electronica duo Icarus and Isambard Khroustaliov along with additional Four Tet tracks "I've Got Viking in Me" and "All the Chimers". An accompanying DVD featured all of Four Tet's videos to date. In addition, the closing track "Slow Jam" was featured in a U.S. Nike commercial in 2001 and 2002; Hebden edited the track on the back of the bus with his laptop while on a tour with Fridge.

At the beginning of 2003, Four Tet opened for Radiohead on their European tour. A remix of the song "Scatterbrain" from Radiohead's sixth studio album ''Hail to the Thief'' was released in November 2003 as a B-side to the single "2 + 2 = 5" and later included on their 2004 EP ''COM LAG (2plus2isfive)''. Furthermore, Hebden was among the people thanked by Radiohead in the booklet accompanying their 2007 ''In Rainbows'' "discbox" release.

A live album named ''Live in Copenhagen 30th March 2004'' was released in April 2004 as a limited edition, available exclusively from the Domino Records website.

In March and April 2005, Four Tet performed two shows of improvisational music, in collaboration with jazz drummer Steve Reid, in Paris and London. He also appears on Steve Reid Ensemble 2005 album ''Spirit Walk''. This collaboration was extended into a series of international tours, and the release of two albums, ''The Exchange Session Vol. 1'' and ''The Exchange Session Vol. 2'' over the course of 2005 and 2006.

His fourth studio album ''Everything Ecstatic'' was released on Domino on 23 May 2005. The video for the lead single, "Smile Around the Face", features actor Mark Heap. On 7 November 2005, Domino released a DVD version of ''Everything Ecstatic'' featuring video clips for each track of the album plus a CD with new material, titled ''Everything Ecstatic Part 2'', which was later made available as an individual EP.

Hebden has also remixed, under the Four Tet name, tracks by a wide range of artists including Tegan And Sara, Madvillain, Andrew Bird, Bloc Party, Super Furry Animals, Beth Orton, Badly Drawn Boy, CYNE, The Notwist, Boom Bip, Battles, Kings of Convenience, Lars Horntveth, Bonobo, Rothko, The xx, Thom Yorke and Radiohead. On 25 September 2006, Domino Records released ''Remixes'', a two-disc compilation of Four Tet remixes. The first disc contains twelve Four Tet remixes selected by Hebden, with the second disc comprising every official remix to date (both by Hebden himself and by other artists) of Four Tet tracks, many of which had previously been available on vinyl only. A new EP, ''Ringer'', was released on 21 April 2008.

In 2008, Hebden collaborated with composer David Arnold to write "Crawl, End Crawl", the song used for the end credits of the film ''Quantum of Solace''.

In 2009, Hebden worked on a secret collaboration with Burial. The two track 12" was released with a plain black cover with no liner notes or details contained on the vinyl, other than the artists' names and the track titles: "Moth" and "Wolf Cub".

In November 2009, details of the fifth full-length Four Tet album were released. Heavily influenced by a stint DJing at the Plastic People club in Shoreditch and entitled ''There Is Love in You'', it was released on 25 January 2010. The album was preceded by a limited edition release of the 12" single "Love Cry".

In 2011, Hebden released a split 12" with Burial and Thom Yorke, entitled "Ego/Mirror". He has been chosen by Caribou to perform at the ATP Nightmare Before Christmas festival that they co-curate in December 2011 in Minehead, England.

Steven Michael "Steve" Burns (born October 9, 1973) is an American entertainer. He is best-known as the original host of the long-running children's television program ''Blue's Clues''.

Early career

Steven Burns was born in rural Pennsylvania, in a small town named Boyertown. He played in bands called Sudden Impact US, Nine Pound Truck, and the Ivys (which he has called a "Morrissey rip-off band") while in high school and college. He studied theatre under an acting scholarship at DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania, in the Lehigh Valley. He quit school and moved to New York City to become a professional actor. He lived in a basement apartment near Times Square, finding his first success as a voice-over artist for ads and making appearances on ''Homicide: Life on the Street'' and ''Law & Order.''

''Blue's Clues''

Also in 1995, Burns auditioned for ''Blue's Clues,'' thinking it was another voice-over role. He showed up with long hair and an earring; "I was a bit of a skate rat." he said. Initially, the Nickelodeon executives were not supportive of Burns hosting their new show; in subsequent auditions the show's creators requested that he dress more conservatively. (Burns reported that the creators, in a call-back phone conversation, asked him, "Could you not look like you tomorrow morning?") It became apparent, however, that he was the favorite with preschool test audiences. Executive producer and co-creator Traci Paige Johnson reported that of the 100 people they auditioned, Burns was "the realest." As Dr. Alice Wilder, Nickelodeon's Director of Research and Development, said, "There was just something about this kid, who was fresh out of Pennsylvania, who just knew where to look in the camera to really talk to kids. He was just right."

From its premiere, ''Blue's Clues'' was an instant hit, due to Steve Burns' performances as much as the show's format. He became "a superstar" among his audience and their parents, but unknown to everyone else, and enjoyed what he called being a "micro-celebrity, about as small a celebrity as you can be." As ''the New York Times'' reported, he "developed an avid following among both preteen girls and mothers. The former send torrents of e-mail; the latter scrutinize the show with an intensity that might make even Elmo, the red Muppet, blush." In 2000, ''People'' magazine included Burns in their annual list of America's most eligible bachelors.

Burns became "very involved" with the production of ''Blue's Clues'' from the beginning. One of the most challenging aspects of being the host of the show was performing in front of the "blue screen" before the animation was added. Burns called it "maddening" and likened it to "acting at the bottom of a swimming pool."

Departure

After six years and over 100 shows, Burns departed ''Blue's Clues'' in 2002. His role in the show "was beginning to chafe" after five years and he left to pursue a music career. Johnson said that "what made Burns a great children's host was that 'he didn't want to be a children's host ... He loved kids, but he didn't want to make a career out of it.'" Burns himself stated, tongue-in-cheek, "I knew I wasn't gonna be doing children's television all my life, mostly because I refused to lose my hair on a kid's TV show, and it was happenin'--fast." The day after he finished filming his final episode of the show, he shaved his head, something he wanted to do for many years, but the show's producers would not let him.

Burns' departure caused a resurface of the rumors that had circulated about him since 1998. As Burns said, "The rumor mill surrounding me has always been really strange." These "specious claims" included dying from a heroin overdose, being run over by a car, and being replaced, like Paul McCartney of The Beatles, by a look-alike. Some viewers claimed that "clues" regarding Burns' demise were placed within the show. Burns made an appearance on ''The Rosie O'Donnell Show'' to dispute these rumors, and he and co-creator Angela Santomero appeared on ''Today'' to help parents assuage the fears of children who might have heard the rumors.

Music career

Burns worked on material for his first album, ''Songs for Dustmites,'' for two and a half years at a small studio in his home in Brooklyn before it was produced by PIAS Records in late 2002. He started work on the album after he left ''Blue's Clues'' in 2002, and it was later released in 2003. He posted eleven songs on his webpage, and then realizing he needed help with drums and arrangements, went to Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips for advice. Drozd assisted Burns with six tracks, Lips bassist Michael Ivins engineered the album, and longtime Lips producer David Fridmann produced it. (Wayne Coyne, also of the Flaming Lips, did not work on the album, but cast Burns in his film ''Christmas on Mars,'' released in 2008.)

Burns started a band, Steve Burns and the Struggle, and completed his second album, ''Deep Sea Recovery Efforts'', which was released in 2009. Members of the Struggle include Drozd and Ryan Smith of A Million Billion. He acted in a horror-comedy film in 2006 called ''Netherbeast Incorporated,'' with Darrell Hammond and Dave Foley, in which he played a vampire.

Anthony James Griffith (born 28 October 1986 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire) is an English-born Montserrat international footballer who plays for League Two side Port Vale. He is also captain of his national team.

He is noted as a tough tackler, though at times this has led to him to having a poor disciplinary record. Turning professional with Doncaster Rovers in 2005, he was unable to win a first team spot and instead spent most of 2006 and 2008 on loan at lower league clubs Oxford United, Darlington, Stafford Rangers, and Halifax Town. In the summer of 2008 he signed with Port Vale, where he quickly became a quiet, yet almost constant presence in the first team.

Playing style

Griffith is usually a popular player with fans due to his 'tigerish displays'. He is a hard worker, best suited to the right-back or midfield position. He has struggled with his inconsistent and at times inaccurate distribution skills, though has a decent passing range.

In addition to his on-the-pitch skills, he is also considered to be a good character off of it. Micky Adams declared that: "he's a great character, a good bloke, and you can rely on him. If my daughter came home with him, I'd be delighted."

Club career

Griffith started his career at Halifax Town as a sixteen year old. Impressing at the non-league side, he was snapped up by Doncaster Rovers in 2005. However he never made it as a regular first team player at ''Donny'' and was instead loaned out to four lower league clubs over two years. On 21 March 2006, he spent a month on loan with Oxford United, on 23 November of that year he joined Darlington on a one month spell. He spent three months with Stafford Rangers from 26 January 2007, where he made twenty appearances at Marston Road. Despite only featuring in the first two rounds of the competition, he received a Football League Trophy winners medal after Doncaster won the 2007 final.

He spent the entire 2007–08 season on loan at his first club Halifax Town, making close to forty appearances before returning to Doncaster where he was subsequently released.

Griffith was then signed by Lee Sinnott in the summer of 2008 and soon became a regular in the first team. He spent much of the 2008–09 season at right-back under new manager Dean Glover's short reign.

For the 2009–10 season, Micky Adams elected to return Griffith to the role of 'midfield enforcer'. He was transfer listed in late September, along with the entire Port Vale squad, after manager Micky Adams saw his team slip to a third consecutive defeat. He remained in the first team however, and was playing in the form of his life under Adams, striking up a midfield pairing with Tommy Fraser, who he also shared a house with. His committed performances made him "a darling of the terraces", though he also picked up fourteen yellow cards throughout the season. At the end of the season he was offered a two year contract, and was given the Player of the Year, as well as the Official away travel Player of the Year awards. He duly signed the contract.

On 28 August 2010 Griffith scored from 25-yards at Vale Park past Torquay United's Scott Bevan in a 2–1 reverse. The goal would prove to be more important to Griffith himself and the Torquay opposition than to his own club, the fine strike his first in the Football League, and his first in Port Vale colours. It also ended the Gulls' run without conceding a league goal at the 998 minute mark, a club record but not a Football League record. He started the season strongly, forming a solid midfield partnership with Gary Roberts. Despite losing his place to Doug Loft following an injury that kept him sidelined for a month, he returned to post 45 appearances that season.

International career

Griffith was raised in the Brackenhall area of Huddersfield, but qualified for the Montserrat national side through his Montserrat-born father. He received his international call-up in June 2011 to compete in the nation's World Cup qualifying campaign, despite never having visited the tiny island nation of 4,600 inhabitants. He was also appointed as team captain. Most of his teammates were amateur players. Before his call-up Montserrat had recorded only two victories in their 25 game history, both coming against Anguilla in 1995. His debut came against Belize, who beat Montserrat 5–2 at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago on 15 June. The second leg was postponed over FIFA's concerns with the Belize government, leaving the possibility of a bye for Montserrat. However the match was re-scheduled, and the Belize progressed with a 3–1 win (8–3 on aggregate).

Griffith is a cousin of Grenadian international striker Delroy Facey.

Ophira Eisenberg is a Canadian comedian, writer, and actress. She is from Calgary, Canada. Eisenberg now lives in New York City.

She has made guest appearances on comedy programs including Comedy Central’s ''Premium Blend'' and ''Fresh Faces of Comedy'', as well as VH-1's ''Best Week Ever'' and ''All Access'', the E! Channel, the Oxygen Network, and the Discovery Channel. She had her own half-hour comedy special for CTV Television Network’s Comedy Now!. She was also featured in the award-winning Canadian film ''The Overlookers'' and episodes of ''The Guardian'' and ''Queer as Folk''.

Stand-up comedy and storytelling

Eisenberg performs regularly in New York City, where she resides. She headlines comedy clubs and colleges across the US as well. She also hosts and tours with The Moth, a NYC storytelling show and is featured on one of their Audience Favorites CDs. She is a core performer in the live shows ''Nice Jewish Girls Gone Bad'' and ''The Liar Show''. She co-produces and hosts the long running stand-up comedy show, ''Sweet Paprika''.

She was featured in ''New York'' magazine’s “Ten New Comedians That Funny People Find Funny”, ''New York Post''’s “The 50 Best Bits That Crack Up Pro Comics”, selected by ''Back Stage'' magazine as one of “10 Standout Stand Ups Worth Watching” in their Spotlight on Comedy Issue, and hailed as a “Highly Recommended Favorite” by ''Time Out New York'' magazine. She was a MAC Awards (Manhattan Association of Clubs and Cabarets) Finalist for Best Female Comic.

Her acting credits include ''The Overlookers'' (winner of Best Picture at the Canadian Film Festival and Best Feature Film at the New York International Independent Film & Video Festival), Showtime's ''Queer as Folk'' and CBS’s ''The Guardian''. She was also in the original Toronto Fringe production of ''The Drowsy Chaperone'' in 1999, which went on to become a Tony Award winning Broadway show.
