Samsung released a list of carrier-specific device models that will be updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in a FAQ Tuesday. While a bunch of recently released devices on AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint are set to receive the new OS version, the future of T-Mobile's devices is uncertain, meaning owners of the months-old Samsung Galaxy S II could be on the outside looking in.
On AT&T, the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy Note, Captivate Glide, Nexus S, and Galaxy Tab 8.9 are all confirmed for Android 4.0. Samsung says that Sprint has agreed to push ICS to its version of the Galaxy S II, the Epic 4G Touch, while Verizon will get the upgrade for its Galaxy Tabs 10.1 and 7.7. On the downside, no firm dates are provided for any of these OS upgrades.
But when it comes to T-Mobile devices, Samsung states only that they "are in close communication with T-Mobile to ensure that eligible devices are upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the coming months." T-Mobile has only two high-end smartphones from Samsung, once of which, the Galaxy S Blaze 4G, likely won't receive the upgrade as it is a variation of the Galaxy S. Samsung has already stated those models will remain on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The fate of the Samsung Galaxy S II, however, hangs in the balance.
The company is already late in pushing out the promised upgrades. In December, Samsung announced the Galaxy S II, regardless of carrier, would be on Android 4.0 by the end of the first quarter. We're now well into the second quarter, and many Samsung device owners are still waiting. The role carriers play in holding up device upgrades can't be underestimated. Still, Samsung is entrenching its reputation for plodding OS upgrade releases.
