The government plans another housing project, but if it is anything like their last, the infamous 'Gateway project', We can all understand what the people are afraid of: Not ever getting a home as promised because they are too expensive.

Joe Slovo reblocking project
Joe Slovo reblocking project
This is a report into a remarkable set of circumstances that occurred in Joe Slovo township, in Cape Town, South Africa, after a fire on 9th March 2009 raised almost 512 shacks to the ground, and left 1500 homeless. The community, united together, sought the assistance of iKhayalami, a grassroots development NGO, to help them plan and rebuild their corner of Joe Slovo around the concept of blocking and in-situ settlement upgrading that has had so much success elsewhere in the World in helping solve national housing crises. What evolved was a partnership, between the community and iKhayalami, where an entire section of Joe Slovo was planned, cleared and rebuilt using materials and expertise supplied by the NGO, and the labour and community access supplied by the leadership. All done at just 10% of the cost of more formal housing developments.

South African Student's Short Film - Port Elizabeth
This was a special project. It involved many people from the townships just out of the Port Elizabeth area, such as Joe Slovo and Kwamagxaki. This film was the result of a 3 week filmmaking class involving a small group of 15 and 16yr olds with no filmmaking experience. The class was provided a space for lecturing and sponsorship by the non-profit organization ArtWorksForYouth. Many of the kids and I spent everyday walking many miles to our locations. They chose to shoot the dinner scene in one of their teachers houses instead of one of their own because they wanted to show a house that they all hope to be able to live in one day. They wanted to tell a positive story, a story that preached a message of hope. For me information please contact: sethped04@yahoo.com www.artworksforyouth.com
