Chris Hedges sues Obama over NDAA
This year was kicked off with a highly controversial bill: the National Defense Authorization Act. The NDAA, now law, gives the US military the power to legally detain individuals without charge or trial. The right to due process has become null and void under the new legislation, even for American citizens. Recently a group of individuals filed a lawsuit against the new law to challenge it, and one of the plaintiffs is Chris Hedges, columnist for TruthDig. Hedges joins us to explain why he felt it necessary to file a lawsuit. Like us and/or follow us: twitter.com www.facebook.com

Obese Woman Sues Southwest Airlines
Obese Woman Sues Southwest Airlines
The woman at the centre of a 'too fat to fly' controversy has announced that she is suing Southwest Airlines, which refused to allow her on a flight because of her size. New Orleans resident Kenlie Tiggeman is taking on the airlines controversial 'Customers of Size' policy which requires passengers to buy a second seat if they can't fit between the 17-inch wide armrests. In her quest to seek an injunction against the Dallas-headquartered carrier, Ms Tiggeman alleges that Southwest ignored her 'constitutional rights' and demonstrates 'discriminatory actions towards obese customers'. While she is not seeking monetary damages from the airline, Ms Tiggeman has claimed that she wants to enact an industry wide standard for rules to be put in place clearly stating the official policy of all US air companies. 'We need to know what the rules are,' she said. 'We need to know if we need one seat or two, because this eyeballing happening at the gate is incredibly discriminatory, and it's so unnecessary.' Ms Tiggeman rose to national prominence last year when a Southwest Airlines employee declared that she was 'too fat to fly,' and asked her to buy a second seat.

Iran's naval warships enter Suez Canal first time in 3 decades
Two Iranian naval warships entered the Suez Canal this Tuesday, en route to the Mediterranean. Israel, which views Iran as a threat, has already called the move a 'provocation'. Iranian officials say the frigate and supply vessel are headed to Syria for a year-long training mission. It's the first time Iran's military ships have sailed those waters since the country's Islamic revolution of 1979. Egypt's Defence ministry says Iran's request stated the vessels would have no military equipment or nuclear materials onboard.

Minnesota Waitress Sues After Police Seize $12000 Tip
Minnesota Waitress Sues After Police Seize $12000 Tip
Stacy Knutson, a struggling Minnesota waitress and mother of five, says she was searching for a "miracle" to help her family with financial problems. But that "miracle" quickly came and went after police seized a $12000 tip that was left at her table. Knutson filed a lawsuit in Clay County District Court stating that the money is rightfully hers. Police argue it is drug money. Knutson was working at the Fryn' Pan in Moorhead, Minn., when, according to her attorney, Craig Richie, a woman left a to-go box from another restaurant on the table. Knutson followed the woman to her car to return the box to her. "No I am good, you keep it," the woman said, according to the lawsuit. Knutson did not know the woman and has not seen her since, Richie said. Knutson thought it was "strange" that the woman told her to keep it but she took it inside. The box felt too heavy to be leftovers, Ritchie said, so she opened it -- only to find bundles of cash wrapped in rubber bands. "Even though I desperately needed the money as my husband and I have five children, I feel I did the right thing by calling the Moorhead Police," Knutson said in the lawsuit. Police seized the money and originally told Knutson that if no one claimed it after 60 days, it was hers. She was later told 90 days, Richie said. When 90 days passed, Knutson was still without the $12000. Police told Knutson the money was being held as "drug money" and she would receive a $1000 reward instead, the lawsuit states. Lt. Chris Hedges Sues Obama Admin Over Indefinite Detention of US Citizens Approved in NDAA
www.democracynow.org - Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges has filed suit against President Obama and Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta to challenge the legality of the National Defense Authorization Act, which includes controversial provisions authorizing the military to jail anyone it considers a terrorism suspect anywhere in the world, without charge or trial. Sections of the bill are written so broadly that critics say they could encompass journalists who report on terror-related issues, such as Hedges, for supporting enemy forces. "It is clearly unconstitutional," Hedges says of the bill. "It is a huge and egregious assault against our democracy. It overturns over 200 years of law, which has kept the military out of domestic policing." We speak with Hedges, now a senior fellow at the Nation Institute, and former New York Times foreign correspondent who was part of a team of reporters that was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for the paper's coverage of global terrorism. We are also joined by Hedges' attorney Carl Mayer, who filed the litigation on his behalf in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Woman Sues Bar for not Checking ID Preventing Drunken Car Cash left her Paralyzed
A 20-year-old woman paralyzed in a car crash after a night of underage drinking is suing a bar for not checking her ID. Chelsea Hess, now 22, argues a barman should have asked her to show her ID when she ordered drinks at a South Carolina Bar in 2009. Despite being a year under the legal age to drink Ms Hess spent several hours at Jock's Sport Grill in Bluffton, South Carolina where she drank with friends and played billiards. When she left the premises at 1am and was driving home her car ran off the road. Officials say Ms Hess, who was not wearing a seat belt, was over the legal drink drive limit. She was ejected from the vehicle and hurled 20ft suffering catastrophic injuries that left her as a paraplegic.

Woman Sues Family of Teenager Killed by Train After She Was Injured by Flying Body Parts
Woman Sues Family of Teenager Killed by Train After She Was Injured by Flying Body Parts
A teenager killed while crossing train tracks can be sued for injuries caused to a woman on the platform, when one of his severed body parts hit her, a court has ruled. Hiroyuki Joho, 18, died when he ran in front of a 70mph Amtrak train at Edgebrook Metra station in Chicago in 2008. It was pouring with rain and the teen had an umbrella over his head. His body was severed on impact, and a large part became airborne, flying about 100 feet onto the southbound platform, where it hit a commuter. Gayane Zokhrabov, 58, was knocked to the ground, her leg and wrist broken and her shoulder injured, the Chicago Tribune reported. A Cook County court judge initially dismissed Zokhrabov's lawsuit against the boy's estate, ruling that Joho could not possibly have anticipated Zokhrabov's injuries. But ruling in what it called a 'tragically bizarre' case, a state appeals court disagreed.
