POCSAG base station prototype on 144.975 MHz
POCSAG base station prototype on 144.975 MHz
Standalone prototype of a POCSAG base station: Linksys NSLU2 computer on the right, Debian Linux installed on the 512M USB memory stick, cheap USB hub and USB serial adapters from DealExtreme, connected to the Internet using a Siemens GPRS module (on top of Motorola radio, flat-rate multi-SIM data). Dials up automatically when powered on and redials the connection if it drops. POCSAG modem in the top right corner, Atmel microcontroller, original design by N2RVQ. Motorola GM340 transceiver transmitting on 144.975 MHz. ATI Wireless Corporate programmable pager receiving the paging messages and saying "beep". There's another receiver (FT-7800) on the background monitoring the 512 bps (yes, bits per second) transmissions. The tiny computer runs a transmitter client, which polls a pair of central servers for new messages which should be transmitted. Another server runs a DX cluster client which uploads DX spots using an HTTP JSON API to the servers. The servers authenticates both the transmitter clients and the message sources using HMAC-SHA1. oh7lzb.blogspot.com

POCSAG test transmission on 144.975 MHz
Successfull Proof Of Concept test setup of POCSAG paging on 144.975 MHz. We have plans to distribute customized DX-spots to users via POCSAG paging, and also prepare for delivery of APRS-messages via POCSAG to users using APRS. Unfortunately the focus did not work on close-up on the pager display, the message says "This is the first POCSAG message on 144.975 MHz de OH2LAK"

200W POCSAG paging transmitter driven using Arduino
200W POCSAG paging transmitter driven using Arduino
Tecnomen HiQ 1000 paging transmitter driven using a self-built POCSAG encoder. The POCSAG binary code for the complete burst is generated using the new POCSAG::Encode perl module on a Linux host, transmitted using a KISS-like protocol called PISS to the Arduino Duemilanove 328 board, which then keys the transmitter and drives bits to the transmitter at the selected speed (512 bit/s in this case). The transmitter is a real FSK surplus paging TX, and puts out 200W. We're currently running on 144.975 MHz in Helsinki. The encoder can bundle a number of messages in a single burst, but there's a lot of space for optimisation in the message scheduling.

Decoding Pagers with FLEX - A. After some time since my last post and a loada tweeking I have managed to decode Flex pagers. These are as stubborn to decode as any I have done in the past. They remain in a sort of limbo between clean packets and a raw tone which counts before it decodes the pager. If you see at the top of the screen the Cycle and Frame data. Unlike Post Office Code Service Advisory Group or POCSAG it is always sending.....and a lot more frequent. Some of the pagers I have edited out as they contain some explicit content. No special other components needed with this one just gentle tweeks of the volume and minor adjustments to the program. I can't explain what tweeks as it was done over a period of a few hours until the pagers remained constant (Kinda reminds me of the first time I decoded Sky series 7 cards and Dmac and later D2Mac in the analogue satellite TV days with Markus Khun's software. From what I gather I was one of just a first very small few that decoded the lot (many many mmaannyy tweeks later). If anyone is still reading this I will make a short video of the D2Mac decoder's guts and how I got around the encryption year after year with just a IBM 386 and a littlle know how (considering I was 15 at the time). Just a few caps by the way on a PCB with a MAX232 and 74LS04 a few 1uf 50v caps and just an indicator LED. Modified later to the Eprom and Pic combination which came later for D2Mac purposes but needed constant updating.

I discovered some weird repeater station which I do not know what it is. Possibly paging? When I get close to cell towers it becomes clearer. Can someone decode the Morse code? - Update - This is the station for the University of Missouri Health Care, it is in POCSAG 512 Baud.
