Behind the Byline: James Risen
From his perch at the New York Times, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist James Risen has been at the forefront of uncovering some of the Bush administration's worst abuses of power. As a result, he has been hauled before a grand jury and pressured by the government to name his anonymous sources. A few days after this interview was filmed, one of Risen's key sources, Thomas Tamm, was featured on the cover of Newsweek as "The Fed Who Blew the Whistle." Risen spoke with ANP about the rise in executive power during Bush's tenure and how the media failed to be vigilant in the wake of 9/11.

Thom Hartmann: Is Pres. Obama illegally spying on US journalists?
Stephen Webster, Senior Editor-Raw Story, joins Thom Hartmann. Is President Obama illegally spying on American journalists? That's what Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and New York Times reporter James Risen says in an affidavit he filed earlier this week. After publishing a book detailing the CIA's mission to sabIran's nuclear program - Risen claims the CIA started monitoring his incoming and outgoing calls to discover his sources. His surveillance began under the Bush administration and continued through the Obama administration. Risen argues that the CIA campaign against him will, "have a chilling effect on freedom of the press in the United States." So how is this allowed to happen in a nation that's supposed to have freedom of the press?

Has Obama Turned Into Cheney?
Has Obama Turned Into Cheney?
We take a look at what the Obama administration is doing to James Risen, the award winning New York Times reporter, who they're trying to force to reveal his source. In his book "State of War" he described a CIA effort to thwart Iran's nuclear ambitions by secretly providing them with faulty blueprints. He also reported on waterboarding of Iraq detainees, and broke the story of the NSA's warrantless wiretapping program. The Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf says in Obama pursuing him so vigorously, has Obama finally become Dick Cheney?

Kiriakou Case: How did Gov't get Journo's Emails?
Last Thursday, the indictment against alleged CIA whistleblower John Kiriakou was finally unsealed and it contained some rather juicy tidbits. Specifically emails between Kiriakou and journalists who allegedly communicated with the former CIA agent that featured prominently. Now, why the government believed it had the right to snoop through these emails as part of their probe is pretty straight forward. Twitter: twitter.com Facebook: www.facebook.com

The Justice Department has charged former CIA agent, John Kiriakou with disclosing classified information to journalists about the capture and "enhanced interrogation", or as we call it torture, of suspected Al Qaeda members to members of the press. This is now the 6th time that the Obama administration is going after someone with charges of espionage, before this administration, there were only 3 such cases in history. NSA Targeting American Journalist
NSA Targeting American Journalist
So much for the First Amendment in the United States of America!! Freedom of Speech, and the Freedom of the Press are both on their final legs, as Big Brother is set to bring the hammer down on any form of information not distributed by the propagandist. One would logically think, that with the First Amendment the US would rank highly among international journalist. However according to the 2011-2012 press freedom rankings conducted by Reporters without borders, the United States ranks 47th, tied with Argentina and Romania. What is even more shocking about the US RWB ranking is that this ranking is on a downwards trend; meaning if government suppression continues we could see the US fall next to countries like Turkmenistan, North Korea, and Eritrea which rank 177178,and 179 respectively. Just as more and more frustrated Americans turn to Alternative media outlets for news, we are seeing at a rapid pace the gate-keeping operations taking place to suppress any American Journalist who dares to question some of the most secretive workings of the shadow government. What if I were to tell you, that the Justice Department would subpoena someone working for one of the most recognizable "mainstream," newspapers in the US, would you believe me? Appearing on JNReports, investigative reporter Wayne Madsen discusses how the National Security Agency are specifically targeting three American journalist whose reporting focus on intelligence and security issues. MSM: Jake Tapper vs. Jay Carney
Alyona takes some time out to shine a light on something that happened yesterday at the White House press briefing which should make everyone in the mainstream media stop and think. White House press secretary Jay Carney praised journalists that have been putting themselves into dangerous situations to bring us the truth. Specifically, he was referring to the two journalists killed in Syria, Marie Colvin and Ochlik. Let's also not forget that Anthony Shadid died in Syria just last week. These journalists deserve respect and praise. ABC's senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper took the opportunity to call out the administration on its double standard, of praising journalists who go abroad and yet waging a war on whistleblowers and journalists here at home.

NA Uzbek Warlord Dostum Pleads to Obama: "Don't Leave, U Spent BNs In AFG & 1000s of MARTYRED!!!"
The Truth About Dasht-i-Leili Twitter DiggRedditTumblrPermalink Published: July 13, 2009 Add this to the Bush administration's sordid legacy: a refusal to investigate charges that forces commanded by a notorious Afghan warlord — and American ally — massacred hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Taliban prisoners of war in late 2001. According to survivors and witnesses, over a three-day period, fighters under the command of Gen. Abdul Rashid Dostum stuffed surrendering Taliban prisoners into metal shipping containers without food or water. Many suffocated. Guards shot others to death. The victims are believed to be buried in a grave in the desert of Dasht-i-Leili in northern Afghanistan. Although the deaths were previously reported, The Times's James Risen has now detailed repeated efforts by the Bush administration to discourage any investigation of the massacre — even after officials from the FBI and the State Department, along with the Red Cross and human rights groups, tried to press the matter. Physicians for Human Rights, which discovered the mass grave in 2002, says the site has since been tampered with. Satellite photos seem to bear this out. General Dostum, unfortunately, had far too many powerful friends looking out for him. He was on the CIA payroll and his militia worked closely with United States Special Forces in the early days of the war. President Hamid Karzai made him his military chief of staff. General Dostum was suspended last year after allegedly ...

Iran: 'IAEA report proves peaceful nature of nuclear program'
Iran: 'IAEA report proves peaceful nature of nuclear program'
From: Press TV The International Atomic Energy Agency's team has returned from Iran and filed a report in which it claims Iranian officials refused to provide the Agency with access to a key military installation. But speaking with Press TV, Iranian Ambassador Ali Asghar Soltanieh says there is much more to the story. The Parchin site was cleared in 2005 according to Ambassador Soltanieh by the IAEA. Still he says Iran will continue to live up to its International Obligations and access to the site will be granted once Iranian Officials and the IAEA can agree on conditions. But Veteran Journalist, Conrad Kramer, of Austria's Kurier Newspaper, says the IAEA's team was too hasty, and believes the team did not exercise the patience that is needed for delicate matters. Mr. Kramer believes that the issue has been pushed almost hysterically by Israel, and has caused knee-jerk reactions from the European Union that will not serve anyone. Ambassador Soltanieh has said he remains optimistic that relations between the two, will continue to be diplomatic as Iran continues its programme. In its November report the IAEA claimed that there was new evidence that Iran's nuclear programme appears to have possible military dimensions. Several media pundits and independent journalists questioned the accuracy of the report's information, even asking 'where is the new evidence' the report claimed to have. Ahead of the IAEA's March Board of Governors meeting, Ambassador Soltanieh continues to ...
