When the quake struck on March 11, PM Kan immediately stopped his cabinet meeting, set up an emergency rescue office, dispatched 100000 armed members of the defense force to the disaster sites, and invited international rescue squads to Japan. One day before Japan』s earthquake, a 5.8-scale quake struck Yingjiang County, Yunnan Province. As a result, 20000+ houses collapsed or were damaged, with nearly 350000 people affected, and tens of thousands homeless. Mr. Yuan, a local resident: "Many of our houses collapsed, and we do not have any tents yet. We live in open air. Some are out on the street. Many have left. Government rescuers are not seen yet." France also proposed to adopt new sanctions to force Tehran to stop it's nuclear project. On Nov 23rd, the spokesman of Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s Foreign Ministry said in a regular press conference held in Beijing that China is opposed to unilateral sanctions against Iran. Scholars believe that, being isolated, China and Iran need mutual support. Meanwhile, the CCP government, with internal and external difficulties, may express an even tougher diplomatic "voice". "Reuters" reported on Nov 23rd: "The United States, UK and Canada have announced new sanctions against Iran in the areas of energy and finance. France proposed 'unprecedented' new sanctions, including freezing the assets of the Central Bank of Iran and suspending the purchase of Iran's oil. Earlier, the "International Atomic Energy Agency" (IAEA) had issued a report that Iran may be secretly developing nuclear weapons. On Nov 23rd, the CCP's Foreign Ministry expressed opposition to the imposition of unilateral sanctions against Iran. More than 5000 Syrians have been killed, including 400 children, since protests broke out last March. The mainland China media reports the PRC possesses high moral ground and sufficient self-confidence in Syrian's issue, even though the Syria's government continues to kill the opposition. Scholars criticize that the Chinese Communists vetoed the Syrian resolution of the UN Security Council based on the concept of sovereignty. However, human rights protection takes the lead in today's international community. Syria's situation is deteriorating with increasing casualties every day. According to the UN, the Bashar al-Assad government has killed more than 5400 Syrians since last March. The activists said that the brutal repression of opposition has escalated since the failure of Syrian resolution. In the evening of the 4th, the UN Security Council voted on the Syrian resolution against government's massacre of protesters. 13 members voted in favor of the resolution, while China and Russia vetoed. It definitely has a positive connotation to it. But there is one exception... Chinese artist, Zhang Bingjian, has painted hundreds of portraits of corrupt officials and named his work, "The Hall of Corrupt Officials," which now appears in various Chinese media. The painter drew the portrait of Chen Shoubin, former director of the Land Planning Office in Shaoguan City Land and Resources Bureau. Chen received a life sentence in July 2010 for embezzling 4.7 million yuan, and committing fraud to the tune of 27 million yuan, as well as misappropriating 900000 yuan in public funds. This is artist Zhang Bingjian's studio in Shenzhen. He hired 12 painters and completed at least 600 portraits of corrupt Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials, including Chen Liangyu, Han Guizhi, and Zheng Xiaoyu. Zhang got the inspiration from noting that in 2008, the average bribe among CCP officials was 8.8 million yuan, three times that of 2007, which was "only" 2.5 million yuan. The main color of the portraits resembled the same pink tone of the 100-yuan bill. Zhang explained that after falling into the trap of money and power, even the minds of good officials turned bad. Zhang plans to open an exhibit when he finishes 2000 such portraits, in an effort to expose these corrupt CCP officials to the world. He said it is a long-term ...

China's censorship stifles cultural creativity [31Aug-11 ChinaForbiddenNews]
FYI: www.youtube.com Follow us on TWITTER: twitter.com Like us on FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com This year, China's Cultural Ministry has issued several bans in the name of "defending national cultural security." It has blacklisted 300 Chinese and foreign songs. Some music websites are accused of "disturbing Internet music market order and endangering national cultural security." Chinese film director Feng Xiaogang lately challenged the film censorship of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), believing that it stifles Chinese films' creativity. Feng said on a CPPCC National Committee meeting about cultural system reform that, in recent years, China's directors did not produce many good films that could capture the great changes in this ear. In addition to the artists' vision and capabilities, the biggest problem lies in the censorship system. Writer Zhang Tianliang and cultural critic Ye Kuangzheng say the CCP has always used films as brainwashing tools. The films are measures taken by the CCP to control people's thoughts and to protect its power. Zhang Tianliang (US-based writer and playwright): "Because the films tell stories, which can be very moving, the audience would accept the morals of the stories, without much resistance. The CCP saw the power of films in changing people, so it is fearful of the traditional values promoted by the films, which may have a great impact on the CCP's rule. So, the CCP subjects films to a censorship and review system. Zhang said that ...

On August 3, wearing a tight and revealing off-the-shoulder short dress, Wang played classical music in Hollywood Bowl. Although technically impeccable, music critic Mark Swed from the Los Angeles Times, said she was "some sort of cocky classical music cyborg" because of her outrageous dress. Swed's comment received much attention from netizens in China. They think Wang showed no respect or sobriety. What Wang wore was a completely contrary to classical style. Erhu artist Li Yun said, when playing the Chinese traditional instrument, she must wear the national dress to fit its style. Li Yun: "Whether born in the 1980s or 1990s, they do not have a traditional Chinese education. March 14th is the 3rd anniversary of the "3.14 Incident" in Tibet. On this day, a Tibetan monk set fire to himself to protest the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) suppression of religion and culture. On the same day, 4000 students paraded on the streets asking for Tibetan language education in Tongren and Zeku County. At the same time, 500 Tibetan monks and Tibetans gathered in Tongren County Plaza. They held photos of the Dalai Lama, protesting against the CCP's rule in Tibet. They expressed their support to the self-immolating monks. Over the past year, there have been many self-immolation rotests in Tibet, leading to over 20 deaths. To commemorate them, the Tibetan government in exile organized a memorial on February 8. Some Tibetan living in Tibet held Buddhist activities on this day. But the CCP named these activities as being induced by the Dalai Lama and the government in exile. Qinghai police ordered the Tibetans to "surrender", otherwise they will be punished. In addition, the local authority said that more than half of the monks in Tibet's Qamdo Karma Temple don't have a proper identification and were sent back to their hometown. The authority asked them to do farming and controlled them strictly with a rule stating that without local government approval, they can't leave the village. The Wang Lijun incident has unfolded with more inside stories from within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) from top to bottom. Commentator Wen Zhao says that Wang's defection to the US consulate has brought the CCP's top-leadership infighting to the surface. Meanwhile, the event has uncovered the past actions of Bo Xilai, the CCP's Secretary in Chongqing. Sources have said that Jiang Zemin, the CCP's former head had agreed to investigate Bo Xilai. However, the task force set up for the probe into Bo's affairs was led by Zhou Yongkang, a Politburo Standing Committee member. Beijing sources have revealed that Jiang differentiates between Bo and Zhou and the CCP itself. Jiang desperately protects the CCP, while Bo and Zhou fight to safeguard their own interests. Commentator Wen Zhao says that the move of Jiang's clique cannot be viewed as a last chance-fighting. It looks more like self-protection. Wen Zhao (Commentator) says that: "The incident linking everything to Bo has been diffused, voices for toppling Bo are favored within the CCP. So the CCP therefore has to conduct an investigation into Bo's activities. If Jiang's clique doesn't participate in the probe, the unearthed news will be used by their rivals as a very important tool against its members. So Jiang's forces must get involved in the probe, aiming not to simply abandon Bo Xilai, but to control the scope of probe. The clique is aiming at controlling the outcome of the probe."
