JPEG 2000

JPEG 2000 (JP2) is an image compression standard and coding system. It was created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group committee in 2000 with the intention of superseding their original discrete cosine transform-based JPEG standard (created in 1992) with a newly designed, wavelet-based method. The standardized filename extension is .jp2 for ISO/IEC 15444-1 conforming files and .jpx for the extended part-2 specifications, published as ISO/IEC 15444-2. The registered MIME types are defined in RFC 3745. For ISO/IEC 15444-1 it is image/jp2.

JPEG 2000 code streams are regions of interest that offer several mechanisms to support spatial random access or region of interest access at varying degrees of granularity. It is possible to store different parts of the same picture using different quality.

Aims of the standard

While there is a modest increase in compression performance of JPEG 2000 compared to JPEG, the main advantage offered by JPEG 2000 is the significant flexibility of the codestream. The codestream obtained after compression of an image with JPEG 2000 is scalable in nature, meaning that it can be decoded in a number of ways; for instance, by truncating the codestream at any point, one may obtain a representation of the image at a lower resolution, or signal-to-noise ratio – see scalable compression. By ordering the codestream in various ways, applications can achieve significant performance increases. However, as a consequence of this flexibility, JPEG 2000 requires encoders/decoders that are complex and computationally demanding. Another difference, in comparison with JPEG, is in terms of visual artifacts: JPEG 2000 only produces ringing artifacts, manifested as blur and rings near edges in the image, while JPEG produces both ringing artifacts and 'blocking' artifacts, due to its 8×8 blocks.

Image (journal)

Image is an American quarterly literary journal that publishes art and writing engaging or grappling with Judeo-Christian faith. The journal's byline is Art, Faith, Mystery. Image features fiction, poetry, painting, sculpture, architecture, film, music, and dance. The journal also sponsors the Glen Workshops, the Arts & Faith discussion forum, the Milton Fellowship for writers working on their first book, the summer Luci Shaw Fellowship for undergrads, and the Denise Levertov Award.

Material first published in Image has appeared in Harper's Magazine, The Best American Essays, The Pushcart Prize: Best of the Small Presses, The Best Spiritual Writing, The O. Henry Prize Stories, The Art of the Essay, New Stories from the South, The Best American Movie Writing, and The Best Christian Writing. In 2000 and 2003, Image was nominated by Utne Reader for an Independent Press Award in the category of Spiritual Coverage.

History

Image was established in 1989 by Gregory Wolfe and is non-profit quarterly based at Seattle Pacific University.Image was involved with the founding of Seattle Pacific University’s Master of Fine Arts degree, which launched in 2005. The SPU MFA is the world’s first university-based low-residency MFA program to integrate writing and Christian conviction, guided by teachers such as Scott Cairns, Robert Clark, Paula Huston, Gina Ochsner, Jeanne Murray Walker, and Lauren Winner.

Virtual appliance

A virtual appliance is a pre-configured virtual machine image, ready to run on a hypervisor; virtual appliances are a subset of the broader class of software appliances. Installation of a software appliance on a virtual machine and packaging that into an image creates a virtual appliance. Like software appliances, virtual appliances are intended to eliminate the installation, configuration and maintenance costs associated with running complex stacks of software.

A virtual appliance is not a complete virtual machine platform, but rather a software image containing a software stack designed to run on a virtual machine platform which may be a Type 1 or Type 2 hypervisor. Like a physical computer, a hypervisor is merely a platform for running an operating system environment and does not provide application software itself.

Many virtual appliances provide a Web page user interface to permit their configuration. A virtual appliance is usually built to host a single application; it therefore represents a new way to deploy applications on a network. Virtual machining is also a Virtual appliance in order to produce actual parts in virtual environments.

Cadet (Paris Métro)

Cadet is a station on Line 7 of the Paris Métro. It is named after Rue Cadet, itself named after M. Cadet de Chambine, owner of much land through which the street passes. The street was called Rue de la Voirie before being renamed. Numbers 9 and 11 are the old Hôtel Cromot du Bourg (containing reception rooms). At number 16 is the Freemason's Lodge, 'Grand Orient.' This station features a classic Guimard metro entrance.

Cadet (album)

Cadet is the first studio album by Cadet. BEC Recordings released the album on April 24, 2001. Cadet worked with producer, Neill King, in the production of this album.

Critical reception

Awarding the album three stars from CCM Magazine, David McCreary states, "this band's self-titled debut achieves in a riveting and surprisingly mature first record." Steve Losey, giving the album four stars for AllMusic, writes, "Cadet offers a disc brimming with sweet melodies, hooky riffs, and simple lyrics that passionately declare truth." Rating the album a nine out of ten at Cross Rhythms, Mike Rimmer says, "More new wave power pop than old school punk, Cadet put some welcome subtlety into the mix and thus set themselves apart from the crowd." Bert Gangl, awarding the album a three out of five for The Phantom Tollbooth, opines, "Cadet album serves, at best, as a mixed blessing for either set of fans." Reviewing the album for Christianity Today, Andy Argyrakis describes, "Cadet's ability to freely express themselves in an easy to identify with manner is exactly where their niche lies. Granted, nothing they've written or played on the disc is breathtaking, monumental, or the next major wave of phenomenal success, but it's just good old fun—exactly what pop music is supposed to be."

Cadet (shipwreck)

The Cadet shipwreck is an archaeological site located in Lake George near Bolton in Warren County, New York. It is the site of the shipwreck of the 1893-built Olive ex Cadet steam launch. It was a 48-foot-long, 9.6-foot-wide wooden steamboat with a pointed bow, and was found submerged in approximately 50 feet of water. The ship was discovered by Bateaux Below Inc. in 1997. In 2005, the ship was reported to be in fairly good condition, with its hull mainly intact.

It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
