Report from the PCDRNET Biannual Conference

Joakim Öjendal and Ashok Swain open the conference

On 5-6 May 2011, 65 participants met for two intense days in Gothenburg. First of all, a great thank you is due to presenters, speakers, chairs and commentators, and of course to our volunteer master students who helped to make the operation smooth!

In line with the aims of the network, the conference opened up a contact space for junior and senior researchers and PhD candidates. All in all 24 papers were presented. Umeå university, Uppsala university, Mid Sweden University, University of Gothenburg, Stockholm University, Lund University and Malmö University were all represented. Further, several representatives from policy organisations participated, also in line with the aims to establish contacts between policy makers and researchers. The International Advisory Board, currently representing networks of Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales (CLACSO) and Asian Political & International Studies Association (APISA) gave valuable input and opened many doors for further cooperation (see below for more on this issue). International speakers and keynoters gave thought-provoking input from the forefront of research.

The broad theme of the conference  – “The Future of Peace Research – An Ever Broadening Agenda” was highlighted under the following themes:

• Securing Democracy – Democratizing Security (keynote speaker Assoc Professor Maria Stern, University of Gothenburg, Sweden)

• Conflict Prevention, Development and Poverty Reduction: Emerging Imperatives within Peace Research (keynote speaker Dr Cheryl Hendricks, Institute for Security Studies, South Africa)

• Post-Conflict Management: Reconstruction, Reconciliation or What? (keynote speaker Dr Nigel Eltringham, University of Sussex, U.K.)

• Global Climate Change: The Challenge for Peaceful Change (keynote speaker Dr Larry Swatuk University of Waterloo, Canada)

Hear and See the Talks Again

The first day of the conference was opened by Professor Lene Hansen from Copenhagen University. She presented challenging ideas under the title of  The Evolution of International Security Studies and the Role of Peace Research. Her talk was complemented by Mr Evariste Karambizi, manager of the UNITAR Peacekeeping Training Programme, building crucial bridges to the world of policy. He connected the themes brought up by Professor Hansen to pressing issues of today, such as the situation in the Ivory Coast, and discussed major challenges associated with contemporary peace operations.

The second day of the conference was opened by Professor Oliver Richmond, whose theme of Failed Statebuilding versus Peace Formation introduced new concepts and deeply resonated within the discussions of the panels.

For those of you who could not participate, take the great opportunity of seeing some of filmed talks which are broadcast on the University of Gothenburg´s website.

Publication from the Conference

Former conferences have resulted in the publication of an edited volume (see Publications), the volume from Nov 2009 conference due to be released in November 2011. Also from this workshop, there will be an international publication as from the other conferences.

Working Paper Series

The PCDRNET publishes a Working Papers in Peace, Conflict and Development Research. If you presented a paper at the conference (or at other conferences and workshops on topics that are of relevance to the network) and would like your paper to be considered for publication as a working paper, please send an e-mail to the Network Assistant Editor, Johanna Mannergren Selimovic.

The working paper series is available freely from the website and will be advertised through the website.

Already published papers.

International Networking

Gladys Lechini, Hari Singh, Hamdy A. Hassan and Alfred Nhema of the International Advisory Board together with Ramses Amer (standing up) from the Steering Committee.

A lively and important discussion was initiated at the conference about the international networking of the PCDRNET. The stated aims and mandate of the PCDRNET is to build a national network, and indeed, over the last years a stable platform for interchange has been built up. However, a question emerged as to whether the network would become more outward-looking (beyond the chosen networks in the South). While no funding for that has been made available, it would of course be most welcome if cooperation with networks in other parts of the world could now be intensified. Useful suggestions were made on how to develop links to the networks represented by the International Advisory Board, such as exchange of PhD Students, shared projects and appointments of guest professors

This discussion is important. Please leave a comment below to share your ideas. They will feed directly into the ongoing analysis of the future of the PCDRNET. A network is nothing but the sum of its participants´ activities, so please engage!

Continued Funding?

The issue of funding was brought up in the discussion. To be clear, the network is partially funded until Dec 31 2011. After that date we will have to seek external funding (which we will). More external funding or not, we will keep the network up and running at some level.

New Focus on Water, News December 2010

The theme for this News from the PCDRNET is water, an issue which concerns the merging agendas of Resources and on Peace and Conflict within International Relations. To date these agendas remain under-theorised and under-researched. Given the manifest and growing global water crisis, compounded by impacts of climate change, water becomes the driver of economic, social and environmental change; and as a result new perspectives are called for. The conflict-development community is strong, and the water community solid, and yet the collaboration between them is weak.

Under Latest News to the right you will find a report from the workshop recently organised by PCDRNET and SIWI (Stockholm International Water Institute) held in Uppsala where a budding network on these issues was launched. As a first result of new cooperation in the area, the PCDRNET can also present an invitation to an exciting course in water security for policy-makers and practitioners in Norwich, U.K.

Publications

As always, you will also find new publications by participants in the network under Publications. Is your own publication missing? Contact the network and it will be put on the list!

Relaunching the network

Welcome to a relaunch of the PCDRNET! The network will from now on be more visible in order to support the growing research community in Sweden concerned with peace, conflict and development. The website will function as a tool for researchers to build closer contacts with each other and with policy-makers and practitioners.

In this first issue of the news flyer, the network presents some exciting news. Get the details in the menu to the right.

The network will help you do many things:

Meet!

Coming up:

The next PCDRNET conference is to be held in May 2011. You are welcome to suggest themes, panels etc for the conference.

The PCDRNET is co-organising two workshops on water and conflict with partners SIWI and SWH which highlight the increasingly urgent and interlinked research agendas on Resources and Peace and Conflict within International Relations.

Publish!

The Network has established itself as an excellent channel for publications. In 2009 a new book on democratization challenges was published by Anthem Press, based on papers from the 2007 PCDRNET conference. Work is ongoing with a volume from the last PCDRNET Conference held in November 2009 on ‘Security and Development Nexus’. It will also be published by Anthem Press.

The network also provides a forum for publishing Working Papers, which opens access to relevant audiences, both within research and policy. An opportunity for PhD students, and junior and senior researchers alike. The Network now presents an interesting new Working Paper on the conflict in Darfur, and encourage everyone to send in papers to be considered for publication in the series.

Build Bridges!

An important function of the Network is to build bridges with researchers and research networks in other parts of the world. You find many useful links on the website, as well as presentations of  different networks. This time, Hari Singh from Asian research network APISA answers Four Questions and gives an insight into the buzz in Asian research environment.

Keep informed!

The network website will hopefully develop into a tool for keeping track on interesting peer reviewed articles, books and reports produced within the Swedish research community. A list of publications by network participants is continuously updated under Publications Log.

Under Other Conferences, you find information about conferences and seminars that might be of interest, but that the PCDRNET is not involved in.

The website also offers shortcuts to keep in touch with the world of policy. Check out the links under Policy Briefs.

What do you think?

PCDRNET is our network, built upon our ideas. What do you want to use the Network for? Do you have suggestions for themes for future conferences and workshops? Leave your comments below, or send an e-mail.

Upcoming Conference: The Future of Peace Research – an Ever Broadening Agenda

The Future of Peace Research – an Ever Broadening Agenda

Gothenburg, Sweden, May 5-6, 2011

Call for Abstracts

The Swedish Network of Peace, Conflict and Development Research (PCDRNET) invites you to participate in its biannual conference. With the fifth major conference in seven years, and a record of three edited volumes with international publishers, the network will now take the opportunity to illuminate a broad spectre of ongoing research within the field. We have selected four of the most dynamic sub-fields, which have a historical peace research connection as well as a potential for being future cornerstones of peace, conflict and development research. Four parallel workshops will be run, each opened by an international authority in the sub-field.

  • Post-conflict Management: Reconstruction, Reconciliation or What?
  • Gendered Peace Research: Growth and Fragmentation
  • Conflict Prevention, Democratization and Poverty Reduction: Emerging Imperatives within Peace Research
  • Global Climate Change: The Global Challenge for Peaceful Change

Each workshop will include keynote speakers, paper presentations and roundtable discussions on publications, bridge-building and future research. The aim is to create fruitful incubators for new ideas, potential cooperation and strengthen networking within each distinctive field, linking junior participants with established researchers. Policy-makers are warmly invited to participate in order to build important bridges between research and policy.

The conference will begin and close with common sessions for all participants to facilitate cross-boundary insights.

Abstracts of your paper should be ½-1 page and include: name of the workshop the presentation is meant for, title of presentation, name and affiliation of presenter and a short summary of your paper.

Deadline for abstracts: 31 March 2011

Deadline for papers: 26 april 2011

The conference, including hotel and meals, is free of charge.
