Exploring the day to day lives of Roman Legionnaires, some of whom were based at Vindolanda; a Roman auxiliary fort just south of Hadrian's Wall in northern England. Vindolanda Roman Fort, Hadrians Wall
Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort (castrum) just south of Hadrian's Wall in northern England. Located near the modern village of Bardon Mill, it guarded the Stanegate, the Roman road from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. It is noted for the Vindolanda tablets, among the most important finds of military and private correspondence (written on wooden tablets) found anywhere in the Roman Empire. The first post-Roman record of the ruins at Vindolanda was made by the antiquarian William Camden, in his Britannia (1586). Occasional travellers reached the site over the next two hundred years, and the accounts they left are useful because they predate much of the stone-stealing that has damaged the site. The military bath-house was still partly roofed when Christopher Hunter visited the site in 1702. In about 1715 an excise officer named John Warburton found an altar there, which he removed. In 1814 the first real archaeological work was begun, by the Rev. Anthony Hedley. Hedley died in 1835, before writing up his discoveries. Little more was done for a long time, although in 1914 a workman found another altar at the site, set up by the civilians living at the fort in honour of the Divine House and Vulcan. Several names for the site are used in the early records, including Chesters on Caudley, Little Chesters, the Bower, and Chesterholm; the altar found in 1914 confirmed that the true Roman name for the site was "Vindolanda", which had been in dispute as one early source ...

Vindolanda Roman Site, Hadrian's Wall
This is a fascinating site which may date from AD85, ielong before the construction of Hadrian's Wall. The site is huge and still under excavation. It has evidence of both military and civilian occupation, right through to the end of the Roman occupaton in he early 5th century and beyond. Vindolanda is famous for its collection of ink and waxed writing tablets which afford us a unique insight into frontier life during ther Roman occupation. There is a good museum and Vistor Centre.

Hadrian's Wall, Steel Rigg & Vindolanda, Northumbria - 29 April 2012
A 14 mile walk in the shape of a figure of eight from Cawfields Car Park on Hadrian's Wall. The walk initially follows the wall from Milecastle 42 along Cawfield Crags to Caw Gap and then onto Winshield Crags and then Steel Rigg Car Park. From here I continued along the wall on Peel Crags and then past Milecastle 39 to Sycamore Gap. Sycamore Gap being the location seen in "Robin Hood; Prince of Thieves" where Robin Hood (Kevin Costner) lands in England at the white cliffs of Dover and then in the next scene has travelled well past Nottingham to this location. Good old Hollywood!!! From the Sycamore Gap the wall follows Highfield Crags above Crag Lough and onto Hotbank Crags and then past Milecastle 37 and then Housesteads (Vercovicivm Roman Fort). Here the route turns south heading to West Crindledykes Farm and then turning west to Vindolanda Roman Fort. From Vindolanda the walk returns north towards the wall, briefly following a short section already walked at Milecastle 38 before leaving the wall at Hotbank and starting the return leg viewing the wall from the north back to Cawfield Car Park. Summer School: Vindolanda Tablets: Everyday Roman Life [Closed Captioned]
Human beings, in my research, are remarkably consistent. We only want to share our greatest achievements with the world, and bury the minutiae. It turns out the Romans some 1800 years ago were no different. Here we take a look at the Vindolanda Tablets discovered in 1973. These tablets are rewriting history, specifically what we thought about the role of slaves in Rome. "The Vindolanda tablets are fragments of wooden leaf-tablets with writing in ink found at Vindolanda Roman fort in northern England. The tablets date from the first and second centuries AD, which makes them roughly contemporary with Hadrian's Wall, which is near Vindolanda. The tablets contain messages to and from members of the garrison of Vindolanda, their families, and their slaves. Similar records on papyrus were known from elsewhere in the Roman Empire, but wooden tablets had not been recovered until archaeologist Robin Birley discovered them at Vindolanda in 1973. Pages have since been found at Carlisle, Cumbria, and continue to be found at Vindolanda. The best-known document is perhaps Tablet 291, written around 100 AD from Claudia Severa, the wife of the commander of a nearby fort, to Sulpicia Lepidina, wife of the commandant of Vindolanda, inviting her to a birthday party. The invitation is one of the earliest known examples of writing in Latin by a woman. It has even been claimed that this is the earliest surviving letter known to be written [or signed] by a woman in any language." —Wikipedia The ...
