The Rise and Fall of Austria or Habsburg Empire / Österreich
Austria was ruled by the Habsburg dynasty from 1278/1282 until 1918. Therefore, historical Austria is also known as the Habsburg Empire or the Habsburg Monarchy. The Habsburgs made Austria a great power ever since 1477, when they inherited much of what is now the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. Soon afterwards they inherited many more lands by their marriage policies. During the 16th century, the Habsburgs ruled over large parts of Europe (not to speak of their enormous American colonial empire). The centuries afterwards they remained a great power until World War I, when the nationalist thoughts in Europe finally divided the old empire into many small states. It's important to put in mind that Austria has always been a "part" of Germany until the 19th century. Indeed, the German Empire didn't exist until 1871, but the Germans (Austrians included) always realized they shared a same language and culture, and the medieval Holy Roman Empire actually was more or less a German state until it fell apart in the fatal 13th century. Since 1452, the Habsburgs were (with one short exception) the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, which was by now virtually a very loose confederation of states. However, the position of the Holy Roman Emperor gave the Habsburgs privileges and some sort of loyalty from the German princes, although monarchs like the Prussian kings didn't care. The Austrians were finally abandoned outside the German Empire in 1871. Music: Johann Strauss II - An der ...

prussia vs austria Empire Total War land battle
Campaign battle. Prussia (human) vs. Austria. In the game, Austria moved a army to intercept the smallest of 3 Prussian corps moving against Vienna. The battle took place near the modern town of Powang, Austria. The Austrians moved their infantry against the Prussian line and quickly had their left overwhelmed by Prussian infantry and cavalry attacks. The Austrians also did not have fire by rank and their center, while outnumbering the Prussians, could not break through and eventually routed under withering Prussian fire. The Prussians also took out the Austrian cannon with two cavalry charges from units hidden in the woods. The Austrians also made a push to take the farming house and the orchard and the fighting was bitter and hard fought. A final charge by the Grenadiers and fierce hand to hand finally pushed the Austrians out of the orchard. The final Austrian attack was by a unit of irregular infantry against the flanking Prussian units, but it was attacked by two sides and routed.

Emperor Karl of Austria, King of Hungary
Karl I (Karl Franz Joseph Ludwig Hubert Georg Otto Marie von Habsburg-Lothringen, English: Charles Francis Joseph Louis Hubert George Otto Mary of Habsburg-Lorraine, Hungarian: IV. Károly or Károly Ferenc József, Italian: Carlo Francesco Ludovico Giorgio Ottone Maria d'Asburgo Lorena) (17 August 1887 -- 1 April 1922) was the last ruler of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was the last Emperor of Austria, the last King of Hungary, the last King of Bohemia, Croatia and the last King of Galicia and Lodomeria and the last monarch of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. He reigned as Karl I as Emperor of Austria and Karl IV as King of Hungary from 1916 until 1918, when he "renounced participation" in state affairs, but did not abdicate. In memoriam Austria - Hungary
In memoriam of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the first tentative to create an union of people based upon prosperity and common interests. 1. The Austro-Hungarian Empire, also known as AustriaHungary, the Dual Monarchy or "KuK Monarchy" or Dual State, was a dual-monarchic union in Central Europe from 1867 to 1918, dissolved at the end of World War I. The dual monarchy was the successor to the Austrian Empire (18041867) on the same territory, originating in the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 between the ruling Habsburg dynasty and the Hungarians. As a multi-national empire and great power in an era of national awakening, it found its political life dominated by disputes among the eleven principal national groups. The Habsburg dynasty ruled as Emperors of Austria over the western and northern half of the country and as Kings of Hungary and Croatia over the Kingdom of Hungary-Croatia which enjoyed self-government and representation in joint affairs (principally foreign relations and defense). The Monarchy bore the full name internationally of "The Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council and the Lands of the Crown of St. Stephen". 2. The capital of the state was Vienna. The Austro-Hungarian Empire was geographically the second largest country in Europe after the Russian Empire, and the third most populous (after both Russia and the German Empire). Today, the territory it covered has a population of about 69 million. 3. Names of the Empire in languages ...

Battle of Austerlitz (1993 BBC Documentary Brian Blessed narrates)
The Battle of Austerlitz, also known as the Battle of the Three Emperors, was one of Napoleon's greatest victories, where the French Empire effectively crushed the Third Coalition. On 2 December 1805 (20 November Old Style, 11 Frimaire An XIV, in the French Republican Calendar), a French army, commanded by Emperor Napoleon I, decisively defeated a Russo-Austrian army, commanded by Tsar Alexander I and Holy Roman Emperor Francis II, after nearly nine hours of difficult fighting. The battle took place near Austerlitz (Slavkov u Brna) about 10 Km (6 mi) south-east of Brno in Moravia, at that time in the Austrian Empire (present day Czech Republic). The battle is often regarded as a tactical masterpiece. The French victory at Austerlitz effectively brought the Third Coalition to an end. On 26 December 1805, Austria and France signed the Treaty of Pressburg, which took Austria out of the war, reinforced the earlier treaties of Campo Formio and Lunéville, made Austria cede land to Napoleon's German allies, and imposed an indemnity of 40 million francs on the defeated Habsburgs. Russian troops were allowed to head back to home soil. Victory at Austerlitz also permitted the creation of the Confederation of the Rhine, a collection of German states intended as a buffer zone between France and central Europe. In 1806, the Holy Roman Empire ceased to exist when Holy Roman Emperor Francis II kept Francis I of Austria as his only official title. These achievements, however, did not ...

Kingdom Of Austria
"Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser" Although Austria was on the winning side of the Weltkrieg, the war's main impact was to reveal the Empire's significant weaknesses and utter dependence upon Germany. Over the course of the 1920s one disaster followed another: Emperor Karl died in 1922 causing the throne to pass to his 10 year old son Otto; Austrian industry collapsed in face of competition from German manufactures; and the quarrels of the Czechs and ethnic Germans in Bohemia nearly pushed the Empire into civil war. Finally, the humiliation of having to call in German mediation to resolve the deadlock of the Ausgleich negotiations in 1927, which resulted in the concession of autonomy statutes given to Bohemia and Galicia, seemed to signal the end of Austria as a Great Power. However, many feel that there is new hope for the Osterreich - now that the Emperor Otto I has come of age and the terms of the 'Great Compromise' are to be renegotiated at the 1937 Ausgleich next year. Could this be the time for Austria to throw off her shackles of dependence on Germany and reassert the power of the Habsburg dynasty over her Empire?
