Indie folk is a music genre that arose in the 1990s from singer/songwriters in the indie rock community showing heavy influences from folk music scenes of the 50s, 60s and early 70s, country music, and indie rock. A few early artists included Lou Barlow, Beck, Jeff Buckley and Elliott Smith. This genre is often closely related to others including freak folk, psych folk, Baroque pop and New Weird America. The genre has been steadily growing in popularity with bands such as Bright Eyes, Iron & Wine, Beirut, The Avett Brothers, The Decemberists, Okkervil River, Manel, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Mumford & Sons, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper, Dawes, Delta Spirit, Deer Tick, Middle Brother, Boy & Bear, The Tallest Man on Earth, The Cave Singers, Bowerbirds, The Middle East, Horse Feathers, Great Lake Swimmers, Blind Pilot, Loch Lomond, The Novel Ideas and Or, The Whale gaining national attention and appearing at festivals such as Bonnaroo, Sasquatch!, Coachella and the Newport Folk Festival.

Andrew John Hansen (born 18 September 1974) is an Australian comedian and musician, best known for being a member of satirical team The Chaser. As a member of The Chaser, Hansen's television work includes co-writing and appearing in ABC Television shows ''CNNNN'' (2002–2003), ''The Chaser Decides'' (2004, 2007), ''Chaser News Alert'' (2005), ''The Chaser's War On Everything'' (2006–07, 2009), and ''Yes We Canberra!'' Early life

Hansen was School Captain of the The Hills Grammar School in Kenthurst, New South Wales and is a graduate of the University of Sydney with honours in Australian literature and Australian history.

In 1995 he appeared as a subject in Simon Target's documentary ''Uni'' about three students studying at the University of Sydney (Hansen later satirised Target in ''CNNNN'' where he played the network's British correspondent who was also called Simon Target). Soon-to-be fellow Chaser member Charles Firth was one of the other two students featured. During the documentary it was revealed that Hansen suffered from clinical depression while attending the university.

The Chaser

CNNNN

Hansen starred in The Chaser's satirical American news show ''CNNNN'' as the leader of the "newsband". He was also characters Rudi J Blass, director of "Newstainment", and Simon Target, an English reporter. Hansen's performance in the first season of ''CNNNN'' earned him the Australian Comedy Award for Outstanding Television Newcomer.

The Chaser's War on Everything

Hansen has been a regular writer and performer on ''The Chaser's War on Everything'' since the pilot episode. He is particularly known for composing and performing songs on the program. He is also known for his character pieces, which include ''Scenes from the Life of the Crazy Warehouse Guy'', ''The Surprise Spruiker'', ''Clive the Slightly Too-Loud Commuter'', and ''Mr. Ten Questions''. In the second part of the first season and the whole of the second and third, Andrew sported a different hairstyle every week. He has said that he likes to look entertaining with his clothes and his hair.

Hansen is a pianist and guitarist and in addition to his songwriting, Hansen composed the show's theme music, which received the APRA-AGSC Screen Music Award for Best Television Theme (2006).

In ''The Chaser's War on Everything'' DVD Volume 2's commentary, Hansen revealed that he is a fan of computer games and ''Doctor Who''. This may have sparked the inspiration for one of his songs sung on ''The Chaser's War on Everything'' Season 1, about ''Doctor Who''. It is also stated on the commentary that about 3/4 of the ''Doctor Who'' props in the video clip were supplied by Andrew himself. On the Season 2 Volume 1 commentary, it was revealed jokingly that Hansen is a huge fan of U2, which is why he chose not to imitate lead singer Bono during a sketch. This allegation was possibly tongue-in-cheek, as Hansen did make fun of Bono by playing a Bono-like character in his radio show ''The Blow Parade''.

For Season 1 of the program, he received the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Performance in Television Comedy (2006).

The Eulogy Song

The most controversial song that Hansen has performed was ''The Eulogy Song'', which was originally written for Chris Taylor's play ''Dead Caesar'', with music by Hansen and lyrics by Taylor. On the 17 October 2007 episode of ''The War'', Hansen performed the song which satirised the lives of several deceased celebrities, including Peter Brock, Stan Zemanek, Princess Diana, Donald Bradman, Steve Irwin, John Lennon, Jeff Buckley and Kerry Packer, expressing the view that people with flaws during life are often disproportionately hailed as "top blokes" after death. The song became the target of significant media attention, with several radio and television personalities saying the song was in "bad taste", and both the then Prime Minister of Australia John Howard and then Leader of the Opposition Kevin Rudd expressing negative views.

Stage Shows

Hansen co-wrote and appeared in the live show ''Cirque du Chaser'', which toured Australia in 2005.

Hansen composed and performed the music for the Sydney Theatre Company's 2007 musical comedy ''Dead Caesar'', which was written by Chaser colleague Chris Taylor. He also played the roles of Marc Antony and Lucius. ''The Eulogy Song'' was originally written for and performed during this play.

In 2008, Hansen toured Australia with The Chaser's second stage show, ''The Chaser's Age of Terror Variety Hour''.

In October 2009, Hansen hosted ''The Goodies: Before, During and After'', a live show by British comedy trio The Goodies at Sydney's Riverside Theatre (Parramatta) and at the World's Funniest Island comedy festival. The show involved Hansen interviewing Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden, as well as performing a Goodies song with them.

In 2011, Hansen joined various combinations of The Chaser team's members for a series of live shows in Sydney entitled ''The Chaser's Empty Vessel''.

Other productions

Hansen was the guitarist and one of the vocalists for independent Sydney band The Fantastic Leslie. The Fantastic Leslie was composed of Cameron Bruce, Tom Gleeson, James Fletcher and Hansen. In July 1999 the band released their 6-track EP ''A Tiny Mark'' which was distributed through MGM Distribution. He was also a member of independent alternative band Mending.

Hansen co-wrote the short film ''Garbage Man'' with Charles Firth and British comedian Henry Naylor. It was a Tropfest finalist in 2005 and a prizewinner at Germany's Ohne Kohle festival. Hansen has also been known to feature on the musical comedy circuit, including a recorded performance of one of his more famous songs, 'I Wish I Was A Scottish Stand-Up Comedian', for the ''Laugh-A-Poolooza'' 2006 DVD release.

Hansen has had writer/performer contributions to the Nine Network's ''Comedy Inc.'' and the ABC's ''My Favourite Album''. He also does the voice-over for the ABC's ''First Tuesday Book Club'' and has voiced the ABC's ''Media Watch''. He composed the music for Nickelodeon's ''Sarvo'' and ''Napman'', and songs for the ''Sesame Street'' character Ollie. Hansen appeared and presented at the 2007 MTV Australia Awards and the 2007 ARIA Music Awards. Also that year, he made a guest appearance on Nine's ''The Nation''. In 2008, he appeared in a sketch on SBS's ''Newstopia'', as well as an episode of the Australian gaming TV show ''Good Game'' on the ABC, challenging the hosts to a 'Roffle Cup'. He also made an appearance as a guest host on the program in 2010, filling in for host Steven O'Donnell and again in 2011 filling in for host Stephanie Bendixsen. In 2009, he made guest appearances on Network Ten's ''Rove'' and ''Good News Week''. He appeared again on ''Good News Week'' in 2010, this time with Chris Taylor, in the guise of characters from their radio show ''The Blow Parade''. The same year, he was a guest on ''Top Gear Australia'', where he drove deliberately slowly around the celebrity track for humorous effect.

Hansen was the host of ''Strictly Speaking'', a speechmaking competition series, which aired on ABC1 in 2010.

He composed the music for and starred in ''The Blow Parade'', a scripted radio comedy series he made with Chris Taylor. It premiered on triple j on 28 April 2010. The series was released on CD and through the iTunes Store with bonus tracks. This album won the 2010 ARIA Award for Best Comedy Release.

He played the character 'Dex' in the 3D movie ''Sanctum'', produced by James Cameron and released in 2011.

Andrew Bird (born July 11, 1973) is an American musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.

History

Early life and the Bowl of Fire (1973–2002)

Trained in the Suzuki method from the age of four, Bird graduated from Lake Forest High School in 1991 and Northwestern University with a bachelor's degree in violin performance in 1996. That same year he self-released his first solo album, ''Music of Hair''. Vastly different from his later work, this album showcased his violin skills and paid tribute to his fascination with both American and European folk traditions, as well as jazz and blues. Following this, his initial commercial exposure came through collaborative work with the band Squirrel Nut Zippers, appearing on three of their albums (''Hot'', ''Sold Out'', and ''Perennial Favorites'') between 1996 and 1998.

Taking on the role of bandleader, Bird released ''Thrills'' on Rykodisc in 1997 with his group Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, shortly followed by second album ''Oh! The Grandeur'' in 1998. Both albums were heavily influenced by traditional folk, pre-war jazz, and swing, with Bird relying on the violin as his primary musical instrument, as well as providing vocals along with his trademark verbose lyrics. The Bowl of Fire featured musicians from Bird's home town of Chicago, including Kevin O'Donnell, Joshua Hirsch, Nora O'Connor, Andy Hopkins, Jimmy Sutton, Colin Bunn, and Ryan Hembrey. During this period, Andrew Bird was a member of the jazz group Kevin O'Donnells Quality Six, for which he was the lead singer and violinist and contributed to arrangements and songwriting for the albums ''Heretic Blues'' (Delmark 1999) and ''Control Freak'' (Delmark 2000) (both Delmark albums were produced by Raymond Salvatore Harmon).

In 2001, the Bowl of Fire released their third album, ''The Swimming Hour'', a dramatic departure from their previous recordings. It featured a mixture of styles, from the zydeco-influenced "Core and Rind" to more straightforward rock songs such as "11:11". Due to this eclectic nature, Bird has often referred to it as his "jukebox album". Although gaining critical praise (''The Swimming Hour'' received a 9.0 from indie music website Pitchfork), the band failed to attain commercial success or recognition, playing to audiences as small as 40 people. In 2002, Bird was asked to open for a band in his hometown of Chicago, but fellow Bowl of Fire members were unavailable for the date. The reluctant Bird performed the gig alone, and the surprising success of this solo show suggested potential new directions for his music.

Early solo career (2003–2005)

The Bowl of Fire unofficially disbanded in 2003, and Bird went on to radically re-invent himself as a solo artist. His two subsequent albums were released on Ani Difranco's Righteous Babe Records label. 2003's ''Weather Systems'' (originally released on Grimsey Records) was a sparse record with a dramatic change in musical direction. It featured the tracks "Skin" and "I", proto-versions of songs that would later become "Skin Is, My" (''The Mysterious Production of Eggs'') and "Imitosis" (''Armchair Apocrypha'').

''The Mysterious Production of Eggs'' (2005) continued a progression towards an eclectic indie–folk sound, and both records formed a stark stylistic break with Bird's earlier work, swapping the lush backing of a full band for carefully layered samples of sound constructed using multitrack recorders and loop pedals. As his sound changed, Bird made increasing use of guitar, glockenspiel, and whistling in his songwriting, in addition to his traditional violin and vocals.

Bird is noted for improvising and reworking his songs during live performance, as can be seen in his series of self-released live compilations entitled ''Fingerlings'', ''Fingerlings 2'', and ''Fingerlings 3'', the first of which was released in 2002. Each ''Fingerlings'' EP was released prior to a studio album, and presented a mixture of live performances from different shows, including old tracks, covers, and previously unreleased songs, some of which have since appeared on studio albums. ''Fingerlings 3'', released in October 2006, also featured studio outtakes. Fingerlings 2 provided Bird with an unexpected boost in recognition in 2004 when it was named album of the month by ''Mojo''.

In 2005, co-collaborator Martin Dosh joined Bird's line-up, adding percussion and keyboards to his sound. Jeremy Ylvisaker was later added to the group on bass and backup vocals.

Signed to Fat Possum Records (2006–present)

In September 2006, Bird signed to Fat Possum Records, and in March 2007 he released his third post-Bowl of Fire album, ''Armchair Apocrypha''. The album was recorded in collaboration with electronic musician Martin Dosh, and includes a track composed by Dosh (with lyrics by Bird) entitled "Simple X". This song first appeared without Bird's lyrics as "Simple Exercises" on Dosh's 2004 release ''Pure Trash''. The album was produced by Ben Durrant (who had worked on Dosh's ''The Lost Take''), and also featured Haley Bonar and Chris Morrissey. In advance of the March release date, ''Armchair Apocrypha'' was leaked to the Internet in January 2007. The album went on to sell over 100,000 copies.

As publicity for ''Armchair Apocrypha'', Bird made his network television debut on April 10, 2007, performing "Plasticities" (from the new album) on the ''Late Show with David Letterman''. He also appeared on ''Late Night with Conan O'Brien'' on June 14, 2007, performing "Imitosis" from the same album. In April 2007, he did a ''Take-Away Show'' acoustic video session shot by Vincent Moon. These appearances were accompanied by an extensive tour, which ended with sell-out performances at the Beacon Theater, New York and the Orpheum Theater, Los Angeles.

In January 2007, Andrew Bird made an appearance on the Noggin television network's ''Jack's Big Music Show'', playing the part of Dr. Stringz and appearing in order to mend a character's broken dulcimer. Bird sang a brief song called "Dr. Stringz", written specially for the show. He now often plays it live as an introduction to the song "Fake Palindromes".

On May 20, 2007, National Public Radio aired a live concert by Bird from Washington, D.C.'s 9:30 Club He also worked with Reverb, a non-profit environmental organization, for his 2007 spring tour.

Five of his songs — "Banking on a Myth" from "The Mysterious Production of Eggs," a medley of "I" from ''Weather Systems'' and "Imitosis" from "Armchair Apocrypha," and "Skin" and "Weather Systems" from ''Weather Systems'' — have been licensed for use by Marriott Residence Inn.

Since March 2008, Bird has contributed to "Measure for Measure," a ''New York Times'' blog in which musicians write about their songwriting process. In it, he has charted the development of the song "Oh No," previewing samples at various stages of development through to the finished album recording. He also discussed the conception of the song "Natural Disaster," the recording of instrumental piece "Hot Math," and previewed "Master Sigh." The first two songs were later released on Bird's 2009 album "Noble Beast," whilst the latter two appeared on its bonus disc "Useless Creatures."

In December 2008, Bird appeared in the second series of Nigel Godrich's ''From the Basement'' alongside Radiohead and Fleet Foxes. His performance included a preview of new song "Section 8 City," a ten minute re-imagining of "Sectionate City," which originally appeared on the "Soldier On EP."

Bird's fifth solo album, "Noble Beast," was released on January 20, 2009, and contained fourteen new songs, with bonus tracks available for download from iTunes and eMusic. "The Privateers" is a re-imagining of a very early song entitled "The Confession" from 1999's "Oh! The Grandeur." A limited deluxe edition of the album included alternate packaging and artwork, as well as an all-instrumental companion disc entitled "Useless Creatures." The entirety of "Useless Creatures" was made available via Bird's website during the run-up to the release. "Noble Beast" has been met with generally favourable reviews, receiving a score of 79 out of 100 from review collation site Metacritic.

In 2009, Bird contributed a cover of the song "The Giant of Illinois" to the HIV and AIDS benefit album "Dark Was the Night" produced by the Red Hot Organization. On May 11, 2009, Bird released the EP "Fitz and the Dizzy Spells." It contains "Fitz and the Dizzyspells" from "Noble Beast," as well as other songs from that album's recording sessions. Some of the songs on the EP were previously available for download from iTunes and eMusic as bonus tracks to "Noble Beast."

In 2010, Bird recorded with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, contributing vocals and violin on a cover of "Shake It and Break It" on "Preservation: An Album to Benefit Preservation Hall & The Preservation Hall Music Outreach Program."

Influences

Growing up, Bird was surrounded by classical music. As a child, he was interested in Irish tunes and bluegrass. He also cites English and Scottish folk music as an early influence. His early jazz influences were Johnny Hodges, Lester Young, and Fats Waller. He has also had a number of classical influences such as Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Bela Bartok. Other influences included jazz, swing, calypso, and folk. Bird has stated that, at 22, he found a lot of indie rock and pop music repetitive and boring, but now understands it better.

Kurt Vile is a guitarist and singer born in 1980 from Philadelphia. He was signed by Matador Records as a solo artist in May 2009.

His music has been likened to that of Bruce Springsteen His influences include Fleetwood Mac, John Fahey, Bob Dylan and FM Rock generally. His first album for Matador Records is titled ''Childish Prodigy''. In an interview with ''Women's Wear Daily'', Sonic Youth bassist and singer Kim Gordon was asked, "Your guilty pleasure right now?" Gordon replied, "Listening to Kurt Vile's latest CD, ''Childish Prodigy.'' Guilty because I listen to it too much..."

Vile released two previous solo albums, ''God Is Saying This To You'' and ''Constant Hitmaker'', on Mexican Summer and Woodsist, respectively. He plays solo shows as well as shows with a backing band called The Violators.

Vile's "He's Alright" is featured during the credits of Eastbound & Down in the second season's finale. Vile was chosen by Animal Collective to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that they curated in May 2011.

Andrew Kenny was the main singer/songwriter of the American indie/lo-fi band The American Analog Set. In 2004, he released a split EP in the Home Series (Vol. V) with Benjamin Gibbard. In 2005, he contributed towards Broken Social Scene's 2005 self-titled album. Andrew Kenny toured briefly with Broken Social Scene in 2007 and with Ola Podrida in 2008 before moving back home to Austin to work on his own recordings. In 2008, Kenny wrote and performed the entire score for the short film ''Pickup and Return'', which was written and directed by award-winning writer/director Alex Johnson. Kenny is currently in The Wooden Birds, which released their debut LP ''Magnolia'' in May 2009. Their second album, ''Two Matchsticks'', is set to be released in June of 2011.
