Share Icon Sightings in the Wild

Project Goal

An icon to represent the generic action of sharing a web page. This could mean adding the page to a social bookmarking site or memetracker, e-mailing the page to someone, etc.

As the number of social sites explodes (del.icio.us, digg, Netscape, Furl, Newsvine, reddit, etc.) it is becoming necessary and more common to abstract all of these links behind a single "share" link to avoid icon overload:

Share Icon's Peers

The Share Icon was inspired by the work done to standardize the icon for RSS feeds and for OPML, efforts which have produced the beautiful Feed Icon and OPML Icon. Pictured here is the Share Icon with its conceptual and visual brethren:

History

In 2006 Alex King introduced a new "Share Icon" for the web to compliment his Share This Wordpress plugin. Read about it here. Nextumi, Inc. (DBA ShareThis) is now the owner of the Share Icon, but the icon is still free for community use!

Share Icon Guidelines

In order to facilitate the standardization of multiple source and destination sharing, ShareThis is offering the Share Icon for general use to the online community using guidelines similar to the Feed Icon Guidelines for the "RSS icon" published by the Mozilla Foundation.
