www.facebook.com *Mexicans of European descent... As Mexico was colonized by Spain, the majority of white Mexicans are of Spanish descent, or criollos, as they were referred to in colonial times. However, many other immigrants (mostly French) also arrived during the Second Mexican Empire, and during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the majority from Italy, Germany, Ireland, the United Kingdom and Israel.[2][3] Greeks, Romanians, Portuguese, Armenians, Poles, Russians, Jews, White Americans and Euro Canadians, and immigrants from other Slavic countries,[3] along with many more Spanish refugees fleeing the Spanish Civil War, also settled in Mexico 1921 Census The Mexican Government asked Mexicans about their perception of their own racial heritage. In the 1921 census, residents of the Mexican Republic were asked if they fell into one of the following categories:[5] "Indígena pura" (of pure indigenous heritage) "Indígena mezclada con blanca" (of mixed indigenous and white heritage) "Blanca" (of Spanish or other white ancestry) "Extranjeros sin distinción de razas" (Foreigners without racial distinction) "Cualquiera otra o que se ignora la raza" (Either other or chose to ignore the race) Pure indigenous heritage: 4179449 {29%} Mixed indigenous and white: 8504561 {59%} White or Spanish heritage: 1404718 (10%) Total population: 14334780 [edit] Regions Mexico's northern regions have the greatest European population and admixture. Connecticut Mayor Joseph Maturo 'I Might Have Tacos' - "SB1070" In Action
We have decided to post this because of how closely it is related to our corpus of ideals... The idiocy (lack of knowledge) of this man... pushing national and racial division... it speaks for itself; however, it is blown out of proportion, twisted by the media because? bias news sells... controversial news sells... A relevant movie to watch? Ace In The Hole by Billy Wilder. We here at NoNationalityNeeded believe that human beings should not be taught to divide themselves. Labels like Latino, Italian, French, German, Chinese, Asian, European, American, African and so on, divide people, if not consciously, subconsciously.... Humans are the same no matter how they look on the outside, how they act, and/or what they believe in; we are all flesh and bone. Through acculturation/socialization children are made into individuals, taught to separate these labels into two categories: "Us" and "Them" (the basic formation of social groups - race, Nationality, and so on); through education and logic, people can be made to see past these diversionary and separatist thought patterns that subconsciously affect one's understanding of the world, turning them into dividuals. Monoculture is not the goal, the absence of culture is not possible but to move to the beat of your own drum is.... And if it doesn't matter...... why are you kicking people out? an open community...? If the 'Latino community' is safe, then why are 'they' being harassed by the police in a manner that calls for federal ...

Do American Indians Look "Hispanic" or Do "Hispanics" Look American Indian?
Do American Indians Look "Hispanic" or Do "Hispanics" Look American Indian?
•There is a problem in the US with the label Hispanic. •The problem is people are redefining the term. The correct term for the label Hispanic; refers to those peoples of origin of Southern Europe. [Hispania] Here are some facts that can help you understand. ♦Hispanic is a term that goes back to the time of Romans [The true Latinos]. ♦Hispanic is someone of, from, or pertaining to the historical region of Hispania. ♦Hispania is the name that Romans used to call the southern part of Europe, what is now "modern" Spain. ♦From Hispania you get España. ♦The Romans used the term Hispanus in Latin to refer those from Hispania (Spain) ♦Hispanus is Latin for the Castilian (Spanish) word Hispano. In todays days now the term has changed and people are misusing this label, specially the US Who considers "Hispanic " anyone who lives in the United States of "Latin America" Origin and can be of any Race, Black/African descent, White/Caucasian, Asian and/or Amerindian/Native American. The term of Hispanic in the United States is obviously wrong and Idiotic.

25. Students' Choice Novel: Jonathan Safran Foer, Everything is Illuminated (cont.)
The American Novel Since 1945 (ENGL 291) In her final lecture of the course, Professor Hungerford evaluates Jonathan Safran Foer's Everything is Illuminated with respect to one of her areas of expertise, American writing about the Holocaust. She points out how the novel takes on some of the questions of trauma theory in its examination of both the pain and the healing power of repetition. The most innovative characteristic of Foer's novel is, for Hungerford, the way it addresses the inheritance of the Holocaust for third-generation Jews in America. The novel finds new ways to provide witness for and connection to their grandparents' experiences in Europe, but also displaces a traditional Holocaust discovery narrative from the Jewish child of survivors to the Eastern European grandchild of those complicit in the destruction of shtetl life. 00:00 - Chapter 1. 15. Imperialists and Boy Scouts
European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202) The boom in European colonial expansion in the second half of the nineteenth century, the so-called New Imperialism, can be seen to follow from three principle factors, in ascending order of importance: religious proselytizing, profit, and inter-imperial political strategy. With respect to the latter concern, the conflicts emerging from imperialism set the stage for World War I. Along with its military and industrial consequences, imperialism also entailed a large-scale cultural program dedicated to strengthening support for its objectives among the domestic populations of the imperial powers. The creation of the Boy Scouts is an exemplary form of such a program, founded upon a mythology of the American frontier reformulated to encompass Africa and Asia. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Environmental Politics and Law (EVST 255) The lecture describes the Clean Air Act and the way the federal government measures air quality as well as improvements in air quality. Professor Wargo reviews challenges in regulating air quality, reasons for lack of adequate enforcement, and approaches to setting ambient air quality standards. The lecture focuses predominantly on vehicle emissions, and the difficulty that regulators face when trying to decrease particulate matter expelled by cars. The public health impacts of poor air quality, particularly in urban areas, are discussed as well. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Challenges to Monitoring and Enforcing the Clean Air Act 12:56 - Chapter 2. 10. Quantitative Aspects
10. Quantitative Aspects
Global Problems of Population Growth (MCDB 150) Census data is often politically influenced and hence inaccurate. The birthrate in developing countries is nearly twice that in developed countries. Most humans live in less developed countries, so the world birthrate is near the higher number. The world birthrate is two and a half times the death rate; we are not close to population stabilization. Almost everywhere, the death rate has been drastically reduced; further changes will not massively affect demographic trends. Changes in fertility rate now control population. Demographic data must be corrected for age structure. A young population in a poor country will have a lower death rate than an older population in a richer country. Countries with high birthrates and exploding populations will have a high proportion of children. There are more people in each younger age bracket than in older ones. Many more adolescents will come into reproductive ages than older women will leave fertile ages. Fertility per woman is falling in the world, but, since there are ever more childbearers, the number of children born does not drop. Because of this 'momentum,' it can take over 100 years from when fertility falls to replacement level (~2 children per woman) to when population stabilizes. In developing countries, even though fertility has been reduced, population growth often outstrips economic growth. People may give up on modernization and instead, idealize a return to some imagined ...

The North Korean Human Rights Crisis
The North Korean Human Rights Crisis
Google Tech Talks June 29, 2007 ABSTRACT North Korea today is home to a network of several dozen concentration camps rivaling those of Auschwitz and Dachau of days past, hosting over 250000 political prisoners and their families. North Korea is a prison state- there are no freedoms of religion, speech, movement, assembly- even the right to leave the nation is barred from the people. Hundreds of thousands of North Koreans have fled to neighboring China, only to be hunted down by Chinese authorities and sent back to North Korea to face torture and death; or to be sold by brokers and smugglers as labor or sexual slaves. An additional 15000 North Koreans toil in slave labor camps outside North...

5. The Rise of the Polis (cont.)
Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205) In this lecture, Professor Donald Kagan tells the story of the emergence of the polis from the Dark Ages. He shows that by the time of the poet Hesiod, there is already a polis in place. He describes the importance of the polis in the Greek world and explains that it was much more than a mere place of habitation; it was a place where there was justice, law, community, and a set of cultural values that held Greeks together. Finally, Professor Kagan argues, following the lead of Victor David Hanson, that the polis came to be chiefly through the emergence of a new man: the hoplite farmer. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Born to be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life
Google Tech Talk December 9, 2009 ABSTRACT Presented by Dacher Keltner. Prof. Keltner will be presenting work related to his recent book "Born to be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life": "In this talk I will survey the latest evolutionary and neuroscience that aligns with Charles Darwin's thesis that sympathy is our strongest instinct, or that we are born to be good. I will take the audience on a tour of recent evolutionary thought, which suggests that our hyper vulnerable offspring rearranged our brains, genes, and social structures. I will detail new research on the vagus nerve and oxytocin, branches of the nervous system that have evolved to enable cooperation, trust, and caretaking. I detail new signaling systems -- tactile communication and vocalization -- which are critical to the transmission of prosociality across individuals. Throughout the talk I integrate the latest science with the wisdom found in Eastern thought." Dr. Dacher Keltner is a professor of psychology at UC Berkeley, and Director for Greater Good Science Center.

Re-caste-ing Alternative Sexuality: A Class Analysis of Social Status in the BDSM Scene by maymay
Re-caste-ing Alternative Sexuality: A Class Analysis of Social Status in the BDSM Scene by maymay
ABSTRACT: Why are there significantly fewer bottoms than tops holding recognizable leadership positions in BDSM communities? Why does a newcomer who plays with another well-known player, the BDSM community equivalent of "sleeping one's way to the top," earn that person disproportionate community acceptance so quickly? Why are those who "play around" this way more likely to appropriate the traits of a bottom than a top? These questions (among others) betray an uncomfortable reality within many subcultures: the nature of their self-identity—the very way they oppose the mainstream—actually replicates certain elements they decry as flawed in the culture they supposedly subvert. In this talk, maymay examines the effects this reality has on individuals' social status within the BDSM subculture. Here, one's sexual role or one's access to coveted resources (like luxury or "designer" toys) figure even more prominently than the more obvious systems of inequality in mainstream culture, such as gender or race. Similarly, if one's affinity or distaste for the subculture's symbolism (eg, laughing during dungeon play) doesn't match the prevailing social norm, they're positioned in a minority within the minority—they are viewed as a member of a sub-cultural caste. What can we learn from comparing common behaviors in a subculture to their "overculture" counterparts? What elements of the BDSM community's discourse challenge the caste-like hierarchy and what elements reinforce it ...

Principles of Evolution, Ecology and Behavior (EEB 122) The Tree of Life must be discovered through rigorous analysis. Genetic information is crucial because appearances can be deceiving, and species that look similar can prove to be genetically very dissimilar and not share recent common ancestors. Two criteria, used to determine what the "correct" Tree is, are simplicity and whether the tree maximizes the probability of observing what we actually see. 00:00 - Chapter 1.
