STORYLINE:
Russian President Vladimir Putin pressed his country's bid to host the 2012 Olympics on Wednesday, hosting International Olympic Committee (IOC) inspectors at the Kremlin.
He said the 1980 Moscow games - boycotted by the US after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan - showed the country was capable of holding large athletic events.
He also said he hoped the selection would be "justified, balanced and fair."
Much of the IOC panel's third day of its four-day visit was taken up by closed-door meetings with Moscow's bid team.
Bid organisers say one of the city's strongest selling points is the fact that so many sporting facilities from the 1980 Olympics are still in use.
However, many venues are in relatively poor condition or far from public transportation. One exception is the gleaming new Krylatskoye ice arena, where weightlifting and other events would be held.
Later on Wednesday the inspectors will attend a lavish evening reception at the Kremlin hosted by Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov.
Moscow, which is the last of the five finalists to be visited by the evaluators, has long been considered the outsider against Paris, London, New York and Madrid. The full IOC will select the host city on 6 July.
The city proposes holding all events within 25 kilometres (16 miles) of the city centre under a bid plan focusing on the "Olympic River" concept with many venues and the Olympic village located alongside or near the Moscow River, and boats providing transportation.
Authorities say the city would have to spend about 10 billion US dollars to stage the event, most of which would come from private sources.

STORYLINE:
The President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Friday.
Grimsson's visit - the first-ever state visit to Russia by an Icelandic leader - is also expected to deal with trade relations.
Welcoming the Icelandic delegation to the Kremlin, Putin paid tribute to Iceland's role in promoting Soviet-Western relations, while Icelandic President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson expressed hope that his country would play an equally key role in bringing Russia closer to NATO.
The Icelandic capital Reykjavik was the site of a summit meeting between then United States President Ronald Reagan and Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in 1986, the first in a series of encounters that paved the way for the ending of the Cold War.
Putin also said the Icelandic President's state visit to Russia was very timely, as bilateral trade had witnessed a certain reduction.
Russia and Iceland now plan to develop a closer co-operation in a host of areas, including trade and economy.
