PJTV: The Power & Danger of Iconography
PJTV: The Power & Danger of Iconography
Barack Obama ran an unprecedented Presidential campaign - utilizing the power of design to help secure the seat of the President of the United States of America. However, his iconic emblem, the ever present "O", holds more power than even Obama knows. Bill Whittle points out the dangers of branding an ideology with an icon and how, perhaps, the powerful symbol will be used against the very man it built up. - www.pjtv.com

A lesson on iconography: a look at Christian Art
A lesson on iconography: a look at Christian Art
They are considered spiritual treasures. Religious figures painted using vivid colors on pieces of wood are thought to be the first representation of Christian Art. Now a group of students are taking a crack at creating their own masterpiece by enrolling in an icon making course. Iconographer Ivan Polverari teaches the 6 day class, steps away from St. Peters Square. The first assignment is to make their own version of this12th century Byzantine icon, a not so easy task. Ivan Polverari Iconographer The most difficult thing about making an icon is illustrating expression, the expression brings out the real person. But theres a deeper dimension to an icon, one that isnt visible to the naked eye. An icon is viewed as an expression of the Christian message. Icons date back to the first millennium, before eastern and western divisions. So to Polverari, an icon is not only the first type of Christian art but also the Churchs first language. Ivan Polverari Iconographer The icon is the language of the Church. Its the art of the church the first way in which the church began to express its divine mysteries As for the students while they may have joined the class for a lesson on icons, they walked out with a deeper understanding and appreciation for Christian art, theology and history. Iconography promotes communion
Iconography promotes communion
The Russian Ecumenical Centre, located in the centre of Rome, is promoting a new icon course directed by Fabio Nones, doctor of theology and director of an iconographic centre in Trent, Italy. Iconographic art has been recognized throughout history for its artistic value, but also for its spiritual and ecclesial value.“An artist who creates a work of art wants to communicate his feelings, his vision of the world, while the painter of icons is called an iconographer. It's a vocation that has the goal of expressing through colours not so much by what he feels, his feelings, rather, the faith of the Church and the Christian community."Iconographic art is an invitation to prayer.“Prayer is communion with God -- not necessarily just the recital of formulas, but to live in communion with His presence. In this sense, when I paint an icon, I certainly pray in order to be in intense communion with God.”An icon evokes the history of Christianity.“In Christianity, it is God who encounters man. It is God who becomes incarnate and takes on a face. For this reason, we can paint him. In other words, it is God who encounters us and the icon expresses this. (...) The background of an icon is usually golden because it expresses the glory of God, which means that the icon points towards the divine world.”Fabio Nones is a member of Trent's diocesan commission for ecumenism and organizes iconography courses in several institutions. Among his works are icons ...

Byzantine Iconography - Iconography Students Writing Icons
Byzantine Iconography - Iconography Students Writing Icons
Fr. Marek instructs students about iconography in his first of two summer classes being held at St. Emilian's Byzantine Catholic Church in Brunswick, Ohio. For an entire week, students, who gathered from around the country, attend classes to be introduced to the ancient art of "writing icons". Unlike religious paintings that tell a story, an icon is theology in color. Here, we see the students follow master iconographer, Father Marek's example in writing the icon of Saint Nicholas of Myra, the real Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas not only cared for the poor, but intervened on behalf of those slated for capital punishment and defended the Christian faith at the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea. At the end of the week long class, the students will join father in having their icons blessed at the Divine Liturgy. They will then take them home for devotional purposes. Icons are not objects of worship.
