F.I.R. () is a Taiwanese Mandopop pop rock band. The band currently consists of Faye Chan (lead vocals), Ian Chen (keyboards) and Real Huang (guitar, vocals). Producer Ian Chen formed his own band and recruited the other two members to form F.I.R. They are well known throughout Asia with their hit "Lydia," which was the theme song for the Taiwanese TV drama ''The Outsiders'' (''鬥魚''). The drama was aired in Taiwan without revealing the singer of the theme song. The song attracted many fans, which led to F.I.R.'s big success when they finally debuted in 2004. Since their debut, they have often been compared with the Japanese rock group, Do As Infinity, because of the similar music styles and formation of band members.

The name F.I.R. comes from the initials of the names of the three members: Faye, Ian, and Real. It is also a backronym for "Fairyland In Reality", one of their albums.

Shlomo Carlebach (), known as Reb Shlomo to his followers, (14 January 1925, Berlin — 20 October 1994, Canada) was a Jewish rabbi, religious teacher, composer, and singer who was known as "The Singing Rabbi" during his lifetime. Although his roots lay in traditional Orthodox yeshivot, he branched out to create his own style combining Hasidic Judaism, warmth and personal interaction, public concerts, and song-filled synagogue services. At various times he lived in Manhattan, San Francisco, Toronto and Moshav Mevo Modi'im, Israel.

Carlebach is considered by many to be the foremost Jewish religious songwriter of the 20th century. In a career that spanned 40 years, he recorded more than 25 albums that continue to have widespread popularity and appeal. His influence also continues to this day in "Carlebach minyanim" and Jewish religious gatherings in many cities around the globe.

Carlebach was also considered a pioneer of the Baal teshuva movement ("returnees to Judaism"), encouraging disenchanted Jewish youth to re-embrace their heritage, using his special brand of music, songs, and inspiring story telling.

Biography

Shlomo Carlebach was descended from old rabbinical dynasties in pre-Holocaust Germany. He was born in 1925 in Berlin, where his father, Rabbi Hartwig Naftali Carlebach (1889–1967), was an Orthodox rabbi. The family left Germany in 1931 and lived in Baden bei Wien, Austria and by 1933 in Switzerland.

Carlebach emigrated to Lithuania in 1938 where he studied at a yeshiva. In 1938 his father became the rabbi of Congregation Kehilath Jacob, a small synagogue on West 79th Street in New York City's Upper West Side. Carlebach came to New York in 1939 via Great Britain. He and his twin brother Eli Chaim took over the rabbinate of the synagogue after their father's death in 1967.

Carlebach studied at Yeshiva Torah Vodaas and Yeshiva Rabbi Chaim Berlin in Brooklyn, New York, and Beth Medrash Gevoha in Lakewood, New Jersey. His aptitude for Torah study was recognized by great Torah scholars and teachers, among them Rabbi Shlomo Heiman, and the Rosh Yeshiva of Bais Medrash Gevoha, Rabbi Aharon Kotler. He was considered one of the top students of Rabbi Kotler. Rabbi Yitzchok Hutner, who gave Carlebach Semikha, considered it a loss to the Torah world that he chose a career in musical Jewish outreach over one as a scholar and teacher . During his yeshiva studies he was often asked to lead the services as a hazzan.

Carlebach became a disciple of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchok Schneersohn, the sixth Rebbe of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement. From 1951-1954, he worked as one of the first emissaries (''shluchim'') of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe who urged him to use his special skills and go to college campuses to attract Jews to Judaism.

In 1972, he married Elaine Neila Glick, a teacher. They had two daughters, Nedara (Dari) and Neshama. Neshama Carlebach is a songwriter and singer in her own right, basing herself on her father's style and name.

Music career

Carlebach began writing songs at the end of the 1950s, primarily based on verses from the Tanakh or the Siddur set to his own music. Although he composed thousands of songs, he could not read musical notes. Many of his soulful renderings of Torah verses became standards in the wider Jewish community, including ''Am Yisrael Chai'' ("[The] Nation [of] Israel Lives"—composed on behalf of the plight of Soviet Jewry in the mid-1960s), ''Pischu Li'' ("Open [for] Me [the Gates of Righteousness]") and ''Borchi Nafshi'' ("[May] My Soul Bless [God]"). His public singing career began in Greenwich Village, where he met Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and other folk singers.

He moved to Berkeley for the 1966 Folk Festival. After his appearance, he decided to remain in the San Francisco Bay Area to reach out to what he called "lost Jewish souls"—runaways and drug-addicted youth. His local followers opened a center called the House of Love and Prayer in the Inner Richmond district of San Francisco, to reach out to disaffected youth with song and dance and communal gatherings. He became known as "The Singing Rabbi." Through his infectious music and his innate caring many Jews feel that he "saved" thousands of Jewish youngsters and adults.

Some Carlebach melodies were entered in Israel's annual Hasidic Song Festival. In 1969, his song ''Ve'haer Enenu'', sung by the Shlosharim won first prize. The Hasidic festivals were a yearly event that helped to popularize his music. He also produced albums with a more liturgical sound. Some of the musicians he worked with during this period added a psychedelic tinge and a wider range of backup instrumentation. Carlebach now spent much of his time in Israel, living in Moshav Me'or Modi'im.

Carlebach's songs were characterized by relatively short melodies and traditional lyrics. His catchy new tunes were easy to learn and became part of the prayer services in many synagogues around the world.

Returning to New York City Carlebach also became known for his stories and Hasidic teachings. As part of his performances he spoke of inspirational subjects, rooted in Hasidism and Kabbalah. Some of his teachings have been published by his students and appear alongside his recorded songs. Carlebach spread the teachings of Chabad, Breslov, and popularized the writings of, among others, the Rebbe Mordechai Yosef Leiner of Ishbitz and Rebbe Kalonymus Kalman Shapira of Piasetzno.

Death

Carlebach died of a heart attack on a flight to Canada. His body was flown to Israel for burial at Har HaMenuchot. During the funeral the mourners sang Carlebach's songs, including ''Chasdei Hashem Ki Lo Samnu.'' Israel's Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau gave a eulogy. An annual memorial service is held on the 17th of Cheshvan at Carlebach's grave site. Additional memorial events take place throughout Israel and around the world.

Legacy and influence

According to Rabbi Jonathan Rosenblatt, Carlebach "changed the expectations of the prayer experience from decorous and sombre to uplifting and ecstatic as he captivated generations with elemental melodies and stories of miraculous human saintliness, modesty and unselfishness."

In the years since his death Carlebach's music has been embraced by many faiths as spiritual music. His music can be heard today in synagogues, Carlebach minyanim, churches, gospel choirs and temples worldwide. Many musical groups state that they draw inspiration from Carlebach and his music including Matisyahu, Chaim-Dovid Saracik, Benyamin Steinberg, Moshav Band, Soulfarm, Reva L'Sheva, Naftali Abramson, Shlomo Katz, Eitan Katz,Yehuda Green, Kol Yaakov and others. Various community leaders and rabbis were influenced by him; these include Rabbi Meir Fund and others.

A musical written about his life by Daniel Wise was performed at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in 2008. A documentary film about directed by Boaz Shahak, "You Never Know," was released at the Jerusalem Film Festival that same year in 2008.

Controversy

Carlebach's approach towards ''kiruv'' (the popular Hebrew term for Orthodox Judaism outreach) was often tinged with controversy: "He operated outside traditional Jewish structures in style and substance, and spoke about God and His love in a way that could make other rabbis uncomfortable."

After his death, ''Lilith'' magazine, a Jewish feminist publication, catalogued allegations of sexual impropriety against him. Specific, named accusers are quoted in this article, as well as unnamed sources and Jewish communal leaders with knowledge of the allegations. The publication of these allegations has proven controversial, lodged, as they were, at a time Carlebach could not respond to his accusers.

Lee Bell (born 26 January 1983 in Crewe, Cheshire) is an English professional footballer who plays for Crewe Alexandra. As well as a previous spell at Crewe, he has also played for Shrewsbury Town, Burton Albion and Mansfield Town.

Career

Bell was a product of the Crewe Alexandra academy system and made his debut for the first team on the opening day of the 2002–03 season. He made 22 appearances in the 2002–03 season, mostly as a substitute. He joined Football Conference side, Shrewsbury on loan in October 2003, but an injury restricted his opportunities and he returned to Crewe in January 2004. Bell established himself in the first team in December 2004, starting 18 times in the remainder of the 2004–05 season, and signed a new two-year contract in June 2005. After falling down the pecking order at the start of the 2005–06 season, Bell joined Burton Albion on a one-month loan in October 2005, which was extended for a further month. He returned to Crewe and made 18 appearances in the 2005–06 season. A broken foot and an ankle injury caused Bell to miss the start of the 2006–07 season. After being limited to one first team appearance, he had a request to leave Crewe granted in January 2007, and joined Burton Albion on a contract until the end of the season.

Following a successful trial, Bell joined Mansfield Town in August 2007. He made 27 appearances for Mansfield in the 2007–08 season, before suffering a serious knee injury in February 2008 that ruled him out for most of the rest of the season. After Mansfield Town were relegated to the Conference National at the end of the 2007–08 season, Bell was released by the club, and joined Macclesfield Town on a one-year contract. It was announced in April 2009 that he had been given a one-year extension to his current contract.

He has since become a fan favourite at the Moss Rose with songs such as "There's only one Lee Bell" being sung from the Star Lane End, due to his ability and preference to pass the ball along the floor.

He was released by the club, along with 10 other players at the end of the 2009/10 season.

Edwin H. (Eddie) Kramer (born 1942 in Cape Town, South Africa) is an audio engineer and producer who has worked with, among others, Led Zeppelin, Triumph, Kiss (and solo Ace Frehley), Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Spooky Tooth, Peter Frampton, Curtis Mayfield, Santana, Anthrax, Carly Simon, Loudness, and Robin Trower.

Career

1960s

Eddie Kramer was born in South Africa, and as a child studied classical piano, cello and violin. He attended the prestigious South African College of Music to learn classical piano, but formed an interest in jazz. He moved to England at 19, where he recorded local jazz groups in a home studio and installed hi-fi equipment as a hobby. In 1964 he joined Pye Studios, recording artists including Sammy Davis Jr., Petula Clark and The Kinks.

In 1965 Kramer established KPS Studios and was later employed by Regent Sound to oversee construction of a new four-track studio.

He joined Olympic Sound Studios in London, where he engineered albums for acts including Traffic, Small Faces, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix, for whom Kramer engineered every album from ''Are You Experienced'' to ''The Cry of Love''. After Hendrix's death he co-produced ''War Heroes'', ''Rainbow Bridge'' and ''Hendrix in the West''.

In 1968 Kramer moved to New York to work at the Record Plant, engineering Hendrix's ''Electric Ladyland'' LP and also worked with Vanilla Fudge, Joe Cocker and NRBQ. Working independently from 1969, Kramer engineered ''Led Zeppelin II'' – the first of five albums he engineered for the band.

Kramer added his own touch to "Whole Lotta Love" from ''Led Zeppelin II''. He said, "At one point there was bleed-through of a previously recorded vocal in the recording of 'Whole Lotta Love.' It was the middle part where Robert [Plant] screams 'Wo-man. You need it.' Since we couldn't re-record at that point, I just threw some echo on it to see how it would sound and Jimmy [Page] said 'Great! Just leave it.'"

In mid-1969 Kramer was hired to record the Woodstock Festival for both the album and the movie. The project was arduous, as he recalled: "I arrived at dawn and was struck by the sight of the sun rising over what appeared to be the stage. The show was scheduled to start by lunch time. That panic pretty much set the tone for the entire concert. All of us in the crew had Vitamin B shots, so that we would be able to stay up for three days. Kramer subsequently recorded live albums by Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Kiss, John Mayall, The Rolling Stones, Peter Frampton, Joe Cocker, Curtis Mayfield, Santana, David Bowie and Derek and the Dominos.

1970s

Kramer was director of engineering at Electric Lady Studios from 1970-1974, producing the posthumous Hendrix records, as well as albums by Carly Simon, Sha Na Na, Jobriath and Peter Frampton. While there he engineered albums for artists as diverse as Dionne Warwick and David Bowie.

In 1975 he left Electric Lady Studios to produce Kiss' ''Alive!'', which began a long time association with the band. His engineering work included Led Zeppelin's ''The Song Remains the Same'' and Peter Frampton's ''Frampton Comes Alive!''.

1980s onward

Kramer produced Fastway, Anthrax and Twisted Sister, as well as country and classical acts including the Kentucky Headhunters and guitarist John Williams.

Kramer produced the Hendrix tribute album, ''Stone Free: A Tribute to Jimi Hendrix'', featuring The Cure, Eric Clapton and Buddy Guy, raising $750,000 for the United Negro College Fund as musical scholarships to Berklee College of Music, the Juilliard School of Music and The Dance Theatre of Harlem.

Kramer produced and engineered Buddy Guy's ''Slippin' In'' (1995), which received a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Record and a W.C. Handy Blues Foundation Album of the Year award. ''Buddy Guy and The Saturday Nite Live Band with G.E. Smith,'' was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award.

He also produced ''In From the Storm'' (1995), a compilation of Hendrix tracks featuring: Sting, Steve Vai and Carlos Santana with the London Metropolitan Orchestra.

In 2010, Kramer produced and engineered a single for the Claire Stahlecker Band called "Never Stop Lovin' You". The band included Claire Stahlecker on Vocals/Guitar, Ben Beutel on bass, Derek Bahr on Guitar, and Patrick Scott Seals on Drums.

Kramer worked with John McDermott of Experience Hendrix (a company owned by the Hendrix family) and Janie Hendrix (Jimi's adopted half-sister) to complete and release of Valleys of Neptune in early 2010, an album of previously unheard Jimi Hendrix. Kramer also said that there is much more unreleased material.

Other projects

Kramer has produced an instructional video, ''Adventures in Modern Recording'', which features an interview with guitarist Les Paul. He has co-authored a Hendrix biography, ''Hendrix: Setting the Record Straight'', with John McDermott. He is also compiling a photographic book, ''From the Other Side of the Glass'', which features his photographs and recollections about the artists he worked with in the 60's and 70's. An exhibition of his limited edition photographs is currently being held at Metropolis Studios in London.

In late 2009, Eddie Kramer and Waves released the Eddie Kramer Collection of audio software plug-ins, five application-specific plug-ins targeting guitar, drums, vocals, bass and special effects.

Ariel Pink (born Ariel Marcus Rosenberg; June 24, 1978) is a Los Angeles-based recording artist who is sometimes associated with the freak folk scene.

Biography

Ariel Pink was raised in the Pico-Robertson area of Los Angeles, attending Beverly Hills High School and later the California Institute of the Arts. In high school, Pink was a fan of such Gothic rock acts as Christian Death, Bauhaus, The Sisters of Mercy, and The Cure (whom he cites as his favorite band). He started writing songs "around age 10" and has recorded over 500 songs on hundreds of cassette tapes since 1996.

Pink produces and plays almost all of his own music, and is noted for creating drum sounds using primarily his mouth, and sometimes his armpits. His home recording technique gives his music a very lo-fi sound, to the point where new listeners may mistake the era of his music. Pink's influences range from R. Stevie Moore--friend, mentor, and "father of home recording"—to Michael Jackson.

Aside from his music, Pink creates and sells semi-abstract and surreal grotesque drawings which can be viewed at his unofficial website.

Pink married Lisa Daniels in July 2002; they divorced in 2005. He currently lives with fellow artist Geneva Jacuzzi.

Career

From 2000–2002, Pink collaborated with fellow Los Angeles recording artist coL, which resulted in each being featured on one another's albums. In the summer of 2003, Pink passed a CD-R on to New York based band Animal Collective after being introduced by mutual friend and occasional collaborator Jimi Hey (All Night Radio, Indian Jewelry, Beachwood Sparks, The Rapture) at one of their shows. Unbeknownst to Pink, Animal Collective had recently started their own record label, Paw Tracks. Animal Collective member Josh Dibb remembers: Several weeks later they contacted him to sign him on Paw Tracks. Pink became the first musician on the label aside from the members of Animal Collective. The next year, the label reissued ''The Doldrums'', an album which had been originally recorded in 1999. Since then, Paw Tracks (now co-owned by Carpark Records) has released two other reissues of Pink's previous recordings, ''Worn Copy'' and ''House Arrest''.

Pink has gradually caught the attention of media sources around the United States as well as internationally. As most of his albums are self-made, many of them have never been heard by fans. Almost all of Pink's albums which have been commercially released come from his recently released "Haunted Graffiti" series and are thus the best known.

Pink's solo tours have generally been met with much negativity, primarily because his music was never intended to be performed live for commercial audiences. As he explained to LA Weekly:

In 2006, Pink's collaboration with Holy Shit front-man Matt Fishbeck led to the release of ''Stranded at Two Harbors'' .

After initially playing shows with pre-recorded music, Pink later employed the efforts of Gary War, Robert Robinson (Sore Eros), Tim Koh (White Magic), and John Maus while touring. In 2008, Pink formed a new band with keyboardist/guitarist/backing vocalist Kenny Gilmore, drummer/vocalist/guitarist Jimi Hey, and guitarist Cole M. Greif-Neill (Ethnik Klensr, The Samps, Nite Jewel), who became known as Haunted Graffiti. Drummer Aaron Sperske (Beachwood Sparks, Lilys) has since replaced Jimi Hey, and guitarist Joseph Kennedy has replaced Greif-Neill. Consistent touring with a fixed band lineup has led to a much more accessible and musically tighter show for concert goers.

In July, 2008, Haunted Graffiti toured with Chairlift. In March 2009, Haunted Graffiti toured the US with Cryptacize and in April 2009 with Vivian Girls; the tour culminated in a performance at Coachella.

In November 2009, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti was signed to 4AD records. He released a new mp3 single "Round and Round" in March 2010, marking a studio quality departure from his former lo-fi recordings. 4AD released it as a 7" single, backed with "Mistaken Wedding". A new album, ''Before Today'', followed on June 8, 2010. ''Before Today'' was recognized by Pitchfork in their "Best New Music" category. The album includes some new versions of songs released on previous records, notably "L'Estat (acc. to the widow's maid)", "Round and Round" (formerly titled "Frontman/Hold On (I'm Calling)") and "Beverly Kills".

In December 2010, Pitchfork named "Round and Round" the number 1 song on their list of The Top 100 Tracks of 2010. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti have been chosen by Animal Collective to perform at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival that they will curate in May 2011.
