Belgium (
i/ˈbɛldʒəm/; Dutch: België 
[ˈbɛlɣijə]; French: Belgique [bɛlʒik]; German: Belgien [ˈbɛlɡiən]), officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a sovereign state in Western Europe. It is a founding member of the European Union and hosts several of the EU's official seats and as well as the headquarters of many major international organizations such as NATO. Belgium covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres (11,787 sq mi) and has a population of about 11 million people.
Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups: the Dutch-speaking, mostly Flemish community, which constitutes about 59% of the population, and the French-speaking, mostly Walloon population, which comprises 41% of all Belgians. Additionally, there is a small group of German-speakers who live in the East Cantons located around the High Fens area, and bordering Germany.
Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Its two largest regions are the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia. The Brussels-Capital Region, officially bilingual, is a mostly French-speaking enclave within the Flemish Region. A German-speaking Community exists in eastern Wallonia. Belgium's linguistic diversity and related political conflicts are reflected in its political history and complex system of government.

History of Belgium
The history of Belgium stretches back before the origin of the modern state of that name in 1830. Belgium's history is intertwined with those of its neighbours: the Netherlands, Germany, France and Luxembourg. For most of its history, what is now Belgium was either a part of a larger territory, such as the Carolingian Empire, or divided into a number of smaller states, prominent among them being the Duchy of Brabant, the County of Flanders, the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and Luxembourg. Due to its strategic location and the many armies fighting on its soil, Belgium since the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) has often been called the "battlefield of Europe" or the "cockpit of Europe." It is also remarkable as a European nation which contains, and is divided by, a language boundary between Latin-derived French, and Germanic Dutch.

Belgian wine is produced in several parts of Belgium and production, although still modest at 1,400 hectoliters in 2004, has expanded in recent decades.
History
Belgian wine first appeared in the Middle Ages, around the 9th century. It is unlikely that wine was made in the area now known as Belgium before that, since the climate was not suitable and Gaul was covered with thick forests. However, there are mentions of Paris vineyards in the 4th century. From that time, vine cultivation spread northward and in the 8th century the banks of the Rhine were covered with vineyards. The first attempts at viniculture in Belgium were made around the same time. Moreover, the vineyards were already well established in Amay. The vineyard at Vivegnis, in the north of the province of Liège, was already considered old in the 9th century, as well as the vineyard at Huy, which belonged in part to the Bishop of Liège. The edges of the Meuse River were intensively cultivated because they offered well-exposed hillsides.

So when my mom and I were figuring out where to go for our trip at the end of the summer, Belgium really stood out for its picturesque architecture and fairytale vibes. In this vlog, we see for ourselves. Come with us to Brussels, Ghent, and Bruges in this vlog encompassing the first half of our trip. For most of its history, what is now Belgium was either a part of a larger territory, such as the Carolingian Empire, or divided into a number of smaller states, prominent among them being the Duchy of Brabant, the County of Flanders, the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and County of Luxembourg. Due to its strategic location and its history as a country of contact between different cultures, Belgium has been called the "crossroads of Europe"; for the many armies fighting on its soil, it has also been called the "battlefield of Europe" or the "cockpit of Europe". It is also remarkable as a European nation which contains, and is divided by, a language boundary between Latin-derived French and Germanic Dutch.
Belgium's modern shape can be partly traced back at least as far as the "Seventeen Provinces" within the Burgundian Netherlands. These lands straddled the ancient boundary of the Scheldt that had divided medieval France and Germany, but they were brought together under the House of Valois-Burgundy, and unified into one autonomous territory by their heir Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, in his Pragmatic Sanction of 1549. The Eighty Years' War later led to the split between a northern Dutch Republic and the Southern Netherlands from which Belgium and Luxembourg developed. This southern territory continued to be ruled by the Habsburg descendants of the Burgundian house, at first as the "Spanish Netherlands". Invasions from France under Louis XIV led to the loss of what is now Nord-Pas-de-Calais to France, while the remainder finally became the "Austrian Netherlands". The French Revolutionary wars led to Belgium becoming part of France in 1795, bringing the end of the semi-independence of areas which had belonged to the Catholic church. After the defeat of the French in 1814, a new United Kingdom of the Netherlands was created, which eventually split one more time during the Belgian Revolution of 1830–1839, giving three modern nations, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

I've seen a lot of videos covering Belgium, more specifically the divides between Flanders and Wallonia, but I always feel like they haven't done justice to the relationship between the Walloons and Flemmings.
Usually, it doesn't touch upon Catholicism, the more concrete policy decisions, the underlying history, etc., etc. So, hopefully you'll enjoy this video, which also tries its hardest to give this political situation the respect it deserves.

Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen in the Belgium province of Limburg, has foundations that date back to Roman times. The Romans knew already that the conditions for winemaking were really good in this Haspengouw area because the property used to have 25 hectares of vineyards back then. In 1990 winery Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen started the renaissance of winemaking in Belgium by planting the first vines again. I was STARVING | Famous Wine & Mussels in Brussels
After a week of eating street food and travelling fast through Western Europe, I stopped to give into my craving for a real meal. So as soon as I arrived in Brussels, Belgium, I sat down at a restaurant to have a proper meal. And where better to try mussels and wine than in Belgium! Mussels, fires and wine are a delectable favorite in Belgian cuisine. Mussels gained popularity in Belgium around the 16th century as a more affordable and readily available alternative to fish. By the 18th century, potatoes had been introduced to Belgium from the New World. So, it's safe to say the Belgians know what they're doing. ON THE FLIGHT IN, I INTERVIEWED HIM AND HE SPOKE ABOUT HOW THE GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE
OF THE TOWN WAS VERY CALMING TO HIM. LATER, ON OUR WAY TO SOUNDCHECK WE PASSED BY
THIS AMAZING CASTLE, AND WE WERE BOTH IMMEDIATELY STRUCK BY IT.
WE WANTED TO WANDER INSIDE, BUT IT WAS CLOSED.
I SUGGESTED WE GO BACK THE NEXT DAY, SO WE WOKE UP EARLY TO GO SEE IT,
BUT YET AGAIN, IT WAS CLOSED. SO WE LOITERED AROUND TOWN AND SMOKED BY THE CASTLE
UNTIL EVERYONE ELSE JOINED US AT MCDONALDS. IN THAT TIME WE REALLY JUST TALKED, AND CONNECTED. WE FED DUCKS WITH AN OLD MAN WHO SEEMED TO IGNORE US, PROBABLY BECAUSE OF GUS' LOOK. GUS SAID HE WAS USED TO THAT TREATMENT, BUT THE “DUCKS DON’T MIND” THAT REALLY STUCK WITH ME.
THE NEXT TIME I SAW HIM, AT HIS FINAL TOUR STOP BACK IN LA. HE MET MY GIRLFRIEND SYD.
HE CAME UP TO US WITH THAT HUGE SMILE YOU SEE IN THE NEXT SLIDE. HE IMMEDIATELY SAID TO ME, “THE DUCKS DON'T MIND” AND LAUGHED. I INTRODUCED HIM TO SYD, HE SAID “I KNOW YOU, YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN TOGETHER FOREVER, 10 YEARS RIGHT?” AND SHE LAUGHED.

So when my mom and I were figuring out where to go for our trip at the end of the summer, Belgium really stood out for its picturesque architecture and fairytale vibes. In this vlog, we see for ourselves. Come with us to Brussels, Ghent, and Bruges in this vlog encompassing the first half of our trip. Belgium (i/ˈbɛldʒəm/; Dutch: België [ˈbɛlɣijə]; French: Belgique [bɛlʒik]; German: Belgien [ˈbɛlɡiən]), officially the Kingdom of Belgium, is a sovereign state in Western Europe. It is a founding member of the European Union and hosts several of the EU's official seats and as well as the headquarters of many major international organizations such as NATO. Belgium covers an area of 30,528 square kilometres (11,787 sq mi) and has a population of about 11 million people.
Straddling the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, Belgium is home to two main linguistic groups: the Dutch-speaking, mostly Flemish community, which constitutes about 59% of the population, and the French-speaking, mostly Walloon population, which comprises 41% of all Belgians. Additionally, there is a small group of German-speakers who live in the East Cantons located around the High Fens area, and bordering Germany.
Belgium is a federal constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Its two largest regions are the Dutch-speaking region of Flanders in the north and the French-speaking southern region of Wallonia. The Brussels-Capital Region, officially bilingual, is a mostly French-speaking enclave within the Flemish Region. A German-speaking Community exists in eastern Wallonia. Belgium's linguistic diversity and related political conflicts are reflected in its political history and complex system of government.

The history of Belgium extends before the founding of the modern state of that name in 1830, and is intertwined with those of its neighbors: the Netherlands, Germany, France and Luxembourg. For most of its history, what is now Belgium was either a part of a larger territory, such as the Carolingian Empire, or divided into a number of smaller states, prominent among them being the Duchy of Brabant, the County of Flanders, the Prince-Bishopric of Liège and County of Luxembourg. Due to its strategic location and its history as a country of contact between different cultures, Belgium has been called the "crossroads of Europe"; for the many armies fighting on its soil, it has also been called the "battlefield of Europe" or the "cockpit of Europe". It is also remarkable as a European nation which contains, and is divided by, a language boundary between Latin-derived French and Germanic Dutch.
Belgium's modern shape can be partly traced back at least as far as the "Seventeen Provinces" within the Burgundian Netherlands. These lands straddled the ancient boundary of the Scheldt that had divided medieval France and Germany, but they were brought together under the House of Valois-Burgundy, and unified into one autonomous territory by their heir Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, in his Pragmatic Sanction of 1549. The Eighty Years' War later led to the split between a northern Dutch Republic and the Southern Netherlands from which Belgium and Luxembourg developed. This southern territory continued to be ruled by the Habsburg descendants of the Burgundian house, at first as the "Spanish Netherlands". Invasions from France under Louis XIV led to the loss of what is now Nord-Pas-de-Calais to France, while the remainder finally became the "Austrian Netherlands". The French Revolutionary wars led to Belgium becoming part of France in 1795, bringing the end of the semi-independence of areas which had belonged to the Catholic church. After the defeat of the French in 1814, a new United Kingdom of the Netherlands was created, which eventually split one more time during the Belgian Revolution of 1830–1839, giving three modern nations, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

I've seen a lot of videos covering Belgium, more specifically the divides between Flanders and Wallonia, but I always feel like they haven't done justice to the relationship between the Walloons and Flemmings.
Usually, it doesn't touch upon Catholicism, the more concrete policy decisions, the underlying history, etc., etc. So, hopefully you'll enjoy this video, which also tries its hardest to give this political situation the respect it deserves.

The country has distinctive regions including Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north, French-speaking Wallonia to the south and a German-speaking community to the east. Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen in the Belgium province of Limburg, has foundations that date back to Roman times. The Romans knew already that the conditions for winemaking were really good in this Haspengouw area because the property used to have 25 hectares of vineyards back then. In 1990 winery Wijnkasteel Genoels-Elderen started the renaissance of winemaking in Belgium by planting the first vines again. What began merely as a hobby turned into the largest wine estate in Belgium that produces top Belgian wines.

After a week of eating street food and travelling fast through Western Europe, I stopped to give into my craving for a real meal. So as soon as I arrived in Brussels, Belgium, I sat down at a restaurant to have a proper meal.
And where better to try mussels and wine than in Belgium! Mussels, fires and wine are a delectable favorite in Belgian cuisine.
Mussels gained popularity in Belgium around the 16th century as a more affordable and readily available alternative to fish. By the 18th century, potatoes had been introduced to Belgium from the New World. So, it's safe to say the Belgians know what they're doing. Then, add a little wine, and voila!

Wijndomein Aldeneyck owners Karel Henckens and his wife Tine used to have a fruit company but decided that life could perhaps be more beautiful when, instead of just growing apples and pears, they grew grapes and made Belgian wine. The vineyards of Wijndomein Aldeneyck now stretch along the south-eastern banks of the river Maas. The pebble and rocky gravel soil, rich in minerals, is perfect for growing grapes.
