About

The Spittoon is a blog venue for the views and ideas of a group of writers and activists who oppose religious supremacism and clerical fascism in all its various stripes and denominations. It aims to contribute ideas to that intellectual tradition, now losing ground to power structures and religious “orthodoxies”. Ideas which respect ‘a willingness to dialogue, a spirit of criticism, moderation of judgment, philological scruple, a sense of the complexity of things’.

By taking on issues related to politics and religious identity, the Spittoon takes a strong line against politicised religious extremism and restrictions on free speech in our society today. The Spittoon recognises the need to address rising levels of racism, antisemitism and anti-Muslim bigotry without resorting to unhelpful and trivialising accusations of “Islamophobia”.

The Spittoon is committed to the principles of liberal democracy, a pluralist, non-sectarian society and the protection of universal Enlightenment values, human rights and secularism. The Spittoon champions the work of activists, writers and intellectuals striving against the proponents of grossly simplifying ideas which advocate the use of extremism and violence to achieve their aims. These reductivist offshoots of belief systems, rooted in patriarchial and primitive tendencies, which are now resurgent political ideologies will be challenged here on the Spittoon.

By doing so, we hope to contribute to a renewal of the politics of democratic radicalism by providing a forum for serious analysis and debate.

Interesting conversations. Some of the topics have dynamic debating outcomes, like ‘Cageprisoners Promotes Hizb-ut-Tahrir’ and ‘The Victimisation of Moderate Muslims’.

You have to admit that your biggest fan, Abu Faris, has quite the potty mouth.

A question: Do you believe Islamists should be allowed to participate in elections? Political exclusion has been shown to foster violent radicalism.

If you want to get more ordinary Muslims to support you, then posting the articles of hate-mongerers, polemics against Islam, and having your fans spout factually bereft vitriol isn’t going to help.

And “freedom of thought”? LOL. This blog is intolerant of anyone who puts in any effort into respecting their religion. The good folks who run this site certainly don’t display “moderation.” It’s “freedom of thought” as long as you hold perpetually evil Islam in contempt.

This is a blog, nothing more. No one here is looking to be “representative” of the Ummah, or trying to mobilise “support”. It’s a place to discuss and critique received opinions and beliefs. If you are uncomfortable with the points of view then find somewhere else where you are.

This blog is not intolerant of anyone who puts effort in respecting their religion. It is critical of anyone who tries to defend and excuse racism, misogyny, religious intolerance and homophobia in the name of their religion. That, we believe, is true disrespect of their religion and to humanity.
