Free Education day at The Shell
After last Saturday´s great success, this Saturday 5th May we will again run our Free Education Day at The Shell, and also every Saturday until eviction on 21st May.

The day will start at 11am and last workshop will be at 6pm. We recommend you get there as early as possible to get in as much learning as you can! Donations cafe will run during the day with tea, coffee and cake and our bar will open at 6pm for you to get a drink and chill out to our evening entertainment. This week we will be raisng money to help pay for court fines dished out for unfair convictions after the Nov 30th protests. Ethical drinking - woo!

So far the workshop programme is pencilled in as follows:

11am - Laughter yoga: A great way to start your day! Get involved to feel energised, refreshed and renewed after last night´s hangover, and ready to have a fun-packed day of educational ecstasy!
12pm - How to use a sewing machine: Our resident fashion designer gives a masterclass on how to get the most out of your sewing machine - see what you can make out of our skipped fabric piles!
1pm - Pickling and preserving foods: Find out how to make your skipped fruit and veg last forever! An introduction to the simplest methods of preserving food without a fridge or freezer and try your hand at making jam - take it home to wow your squatmates! Bring a jar if you can (with metal lid).
2pm - Flamenco: An upgrade on last week from performance to workshop. Learn how to strut your stuff with our professional flamenco dancers and bring your guitar to learn how to strum along to flamenco beats.
3pm - Poetry and performance: If you liked the incredibly talented slam poets we had in our evening show last week, you´ll love this workshop where you´ll learn how to create your own verses and spit them with style.
4pm - Bike maintenance: Our in-house expert takes your two-wheeled worries and sets them to rest. Find out what´s making that annoying squeaky noise, why you´re so slow compared to your cycling squatmates (it´s not you, it´s the bike, honestly!) and fix your pride and joy with confidence.
5pm - Media training: Ever wondered how those bods on TV manage to come up with such eloquent and reasoned soundbytes? Start stuttering and stammering when faced with the press at protests and events but wish you could get your point of view across? Then this is the workshop for you.
6pm - Guided meditation: Let all the information you´ve been inundated with during the day settle into your mind holes with an hour of meditation and feel all set for an evening of entertainment and performance.

What a line-up! We´re already counting the minutes. The timetable is likely to jiggle around a little, so we´ll say it once more, come as early as you can to make sure you don´t miss out on the action!

As last week, we have our ongoing community art project, there´s still lots of bits that need to be coloured in, and our photo exhibition in the main space. Thanks to everyone who contributed to our interactive language board last week - this week have a go at interactive pictionary - does your squamily ´get´ your artistic talent?

‘What makes good radical writing?’ with Anne Beech, Ian Bone, and Suzanne Moore
PANEL DISCUSSION
‘What makes good radical writing?’

On Tuesday 1st May the first recipient of the Bread and Roses Award for Radical Publishing shall be announced. The process of creating a radical book prize has brought up interesting questions as to how to evaluate radical writing. Is the primary goal to effectively communicate ideas? And if so, how do we measure its effectiveness? How do we measure it’s radicalism? Must it be accessible to all readers, or is there a place for pedantic or even obscure writing?

Based on their experiences within the radical wing of contemporary journalism and book publishing, our speakers will navigate the tensions between vanguardism and populism that have guided radical writing and actions for the last century, and reflect on how these tensions are manifested today.

Please join us as we tackle these questions in what will be an illuminating discussion on the forms and contents of radical communication.

International Squatters
Following the success of previous squatting convergences across Europe (Dijon '07, Leeds, Berlin '08 & Bristol '09) the Squatters' Network of Brighton (S.N.O.B) invites YOU for a weekend by the sea for the next squatter convergence!

With a bit of luck there should be some workshops (nominate yourself to run one!) and plenty of opportunities to get rowdy with your fellow
squatters.

Celebrate squatting, meet squatters from all over the UK and other countries, spread the word about what's going on in your city, and mobilise for action against the squatting ban right on Mike Weatherly's door step.

In true squatter style this event will be focused on D.I.Y. and autonomous ethos so bring ideas, friends and things to share.

SchNEWS in Brief...
CRAP ARREST OF THE WEEK

For taking the turd way...

German protesters were arrested in Athens on Thursday after leaving a giant golden crap on the doorstep of the German embassy in the Greek capital, in protest against Berlin's “neoliberal EU policy".

The politico/artists collective from Hamburg, Schwabinggrad Ballett, who dumped the excremental offering topped it off with a huge photo of the German national emblem – the eagle, embellished with Angela Merkel's head.

Greek cops soon arrested ten of the 13-strong group and confiscated their fake faeces. They're all now presumably in the shit.

Afro-Punk, explores race identity within the punk scene. More than your everyday, Behind the Music or typical "black history month" documentary this film tackles the hard questions, such as issues of loneliness, exile, inter-racial dating and black power.

Wednesday, May 30, 2012, 8:00pm until 11:00pm

Follow filmmaker Jeremy Seifert and his circle of friends as they dumpster dive in the back alleys and gated garbage receptacles of L.A.'s supermarkets. In the process they uncover thousands of dollars worth of good food and an ugly truth about waste in America: grocery stores know they are wasting and most refuse to do anything about it.

Dive! Living Off America’s Waste by first-time filmmaker Jeremy Seifert, and made with a budget of a mere US$200, explores how American grocery stores are quietly filling their dumpsters with edible food while so many people in the USA go without proper access to nutritious food.

Monday, June 11, 2012, 8:00pm until 11:00pm

As the front man of the Clash from 1977 onwards, Joe Strummer changed people's lives forever. Filmmaker Julien Temple takes a look beyond the guise of the late, anti-establishment icon Joe Strummer to offer a warm portrait of the self-described "mouthy little git" who was born John Mellor and was destined to become the frontman for one of the most influential punk bands ever.

A complex figure who would learn to use his gift for music as a means of decompressing his conscience, Strummer is revealed here through unearthed interviews and the illuminating recollections of his closest companions.

Monday, June 25, 2012, 8:00pm until 11:00pm

And finally...

Rupert Murdoch is a commie... it's official, well at least according to our friends on the various forums and facebook sites that make up the collective half-wit of the far-right. Just imagine returning home, exhausted from your efforts to hold the George Cross high and shout racist abuse while being showered with horse-shit by a bunch of communist homosexual freaks -  only to find out that your favourite newspaper has a decidedly different take on events.

Hilariously the Sun Says op-ed piece on Monday blamed the 'neo-Nazis' of the EDL for dragging the flag 'through the gutter'. This one fact did more to rile the knuckle-draggers of the March for England than any number of airborne bottles of piss.

In fact some of the EDLs intellectual vanguard are beginning to suspect that the red-tops aren't telling the whole truth (!), with one online marcher spouting “DONT BUY A F*CKING NEWSPAPER. IT SPOUTS THE SAME B*LLOCKS ALL THE TIME. TAKE A LEAF OUT OF LIVERPOOL. MOST OF THEM DONT BUY THE SUN ANYMORE SO BOYCOTT ALL NEWSPAPERS!”

Now lads – if you could just extend that (albeit slightly faulty) logic to all the “Muslamic suicide-nonce Sharia Law benefit fraud shame” stories that got you so riled up in the first place, then maybe we could all enjoy next years St George's Day in peace.

SchNEWS warns all protesters, don't call yourselves "pro-life" until you do the right thing and fight against war. Honest!
