This 3D medical animation depicts the anatomy and physiology of the eye and demonstrates the different surgical techniques commonly used to treat glaucoma. The optic nerve connects the retina to the brain. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. A healthy optic nerve is necessary for good vision. In the front of the eye is a space called the anterior chamber. A clear fluid flows continuously in and out of the chamber and nourishes nearby tissues. The fluid leaves the chamber at the open angle where the cornea and iris meet. When the fluid reaches the angle, it flows through a spongy meshwork, like a drain, and leaves the eye. Sometimes, when the fluid reaches the angle, it passes too slowly through the meshwork drain. As the fluid builds up, the pressure inside the eye rises to a level that may damage the optic nerve. When the optic nerve is damaged from increased pressure, open-angle glaucoma--and vision loss--may result. The three common treatments for glaucoma are Laser Trabeculoplasty, Cyclophotocoagulation and Trabeculectomy. ANH00002

Glaucoma is a disease that damages the eye's optic nerve. If you have glaucoma, the aqueous humor does not flow out of the eye properly. Fluid pressure in the eye builds up and, over time, causes damage to the optic nerve fibers. Glaucoma can cause blindness if it is left untreated. Get more information at www.geteyesmart.org.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Closed Angle Glaucoma
Diagnosis and Treatment of Closed Angle Glaucoma
This 3D medical animation shows how a closed angle iris from the right eye has blocked the drainage of aqueous humor. When left untreated, the resulting ocular pressure damages the optic nerve and causes blindness. On the left eye, which also has a closed angle iris, proper drainage is restored from laser iridotomy and peripheral iridectomy. Item # ANS00355

Paterson lost sight in his left eye ... and much of the sight in his right eye after an infection as an infant.
