Bogor
Bogor (Indonesian: Kota Bogor, Dutch: Buitenzorg) is a city on the island of Java in the West Java province of Indonesia. The city is located in the center of the Bogor Regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten Bogor), 60 kilometers (37Â mi) south of the Indonesian capital Jakarta, although it is administratively independent from that regency. Bogor is the 6th largest city of Jabodetabek (the Jakarta metropolitan region) and the 14th nationwide, with a population having passed 1 million; it is an important economic, scientific, cultural and tourist center, as well as a mountain resort. In 2015, the new president (Joko Widodo) moved the seat of the president from Merdeka Palace to Bogor.
In the Middle Ages, the city was the capital of Sunda Kingdom (Indonesian: Kerajaan Sunda) and was called Pakuan Pajajaran. During the Dutch colonial era, it was named Buitenzorg (meaning "Without a care" in Dutch) and served as the summer residence of the Governor-General of Dutch East Indies.
With several hundred thousand people living on an area of about 20 km2 (7.7 sq mi), the central part of Bogor is one of the world's most densely populated areas. The city has a presidential palace and a botanical garden (Indonesian: Kebun Raya Bogor) – one of the oldest and largest in the world. It bears the nickname "the Rain City" (Kota Hujan), because of frequent rain showers. It nearly always rains even during the dry season.

Escaping Jakarta for Indonesia's SWEATIEST City | Bogor 🇮🇩
Following a fulfilling few days in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, I decided to take a break from the city and catch the next train out of Stasiun Jakarta Kota. Without any particular plan, I was excited to see where my adventure would take me. Located around 60 kilometers (37 mi) south of the national capital of Jakarta, Bogor is the 6th largest city in the Jakarta metropolitan area and the 14th overall nationwide. The city covers an area of 118.50 km2, and it had a population of 950,334 in the 2010 Census and 1,043,070 in the 2020 Census. The official estimate for mid 2022 is 1,099,422. Bogor is an important economic, scientific, cultural, and tourist center, as well as a mountain resort.
During the Middle Ages, the city served as the capital of the #SundaKingdom (Indonesian: Kerajaan #Sunda) and was called #Pakuan #Pajajaran or Dayeuh Pakuan. During the Dutch colonial era, it was named Buitenzorg ("without worries" in Dutch) and served as the summer residence of the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.
With several hundred thousand people living on an area of about 20 km2 (7.7 sq mi), the central part of Bogor is one of the world's most densely populated areas. The city has a presidential palace and a botanical garden (Indonesian: Kebun Raya Bogor) – one of the oldest and largest in the world. It bears the nickname "Rainy City" ( #KotaHujan ), because of frequent rain showers, even during the dry season.
The first mention of a settlement at present Bogor dates to the 5th century when the area was part of #Tarumanagara, one of the earliest states in Indonesian history. After a series of defeats by the neighboring Srivijaya, Tarumanagara was transformed into the Sunda Kingdom, and in 669, the capital of Sunda was built between two parallel rivers, the Ciliwung and Cisadane. It was named Pakuan Pajajaran, in old Sundanese meaning "a place between the parallel [rivers]", and became the predecessor of the modern Bogor.

Over the next several centuries, Pakuan Pajajaran became one of the largest cities in medieval Indonesia with a population reaching 48,000. The name Pajajaran was then used for the entire kingdom, and the capital was simply called Pakuan. The chronicles of that time were written in Sanskrit, which was the language used for official and religious purposes, using the Pallava writing system, on rock stellas called prasasti. The prasasti found in and around Bogor differ in shape and text style from other Indonesian prasasti and are among the main attractions of the city.
From the 9th-15th centuries, the capital moved between Pakuan and other cities of the kingdom, and finally returned to Pakuan by King Siliwangi (Sri Baduga Maharaja) on 3 June 1482 – the day of his coronation. Since 1973, this date is celebrated in Bogor as an official city holiday.
In 1579, Pakuan was captured and almost completely destroyed by the army of the Sultanate of Banten, causing the existence of the State of Sunda to cease. The city was abandoned and remained uninhabited for decades.

Following a fulfilling few days in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, I decided to take a break from the city and catch the next train out of Stasiun Jakarta Kota.
Without any particular plan, I was excited to see where my adventure would take me. After the spectacle of the Dirgahayu TNI military display, and indeed the threat of food poisoning in Glodok market, I was hoping to find something more relaxing for my downtime over the weekend.
The next service was to Bogor, a town that (according to some on-the-move research on wikipedia) was known for its epic botanical gardens (Kebun Raya Bogor) and presidential palace (Istana Bogor).
However, as idyllic as this sounded, I also learned that Bogor is regarded as one of the most overcrowded cities in the world - with 87% humidity and 23 days of rainfall per month...
Alas, my hopes of escaping the clutches of the capital and the heat were dashed, but I was still determined to see the sights and uncover more about the Dutch colonial history.
As I ventured towards the park, past the sign for Alun-Alun Kota Bagor, I soon learned of the city's pollution, which made reaching the gardens all the more of a relief.
Having taken a few selfies with the friendly local Indonesian people, I explored the botanical gardens and made my way towards the presidential palace, and Dutch cemetery to absorb more of what Bogor is about.
Suitably impressed, I left the green oasis and made my way back to the station through the increasing traffic and pollution to catch the train back to Jakarta. But I must admit, given the unreal humidity, I was looking forward to a cold shower and couple of Bintang's at my hotel overlooking Jakarta's epic skyline.

Bogor (Sundanese: ᮘᮧᮌᮧ�, Dutch: Buitenzorg) is a city in the West Java province, Indonesia. Located around 60 kilometers (37 mi) south of the national capital of Jakarta, Bogor is the 6th largest city in the Jakarta metropolitan area and the 14th overall nationwide. The city covers an area of 118.50 km2, and it had a population of 950,334 in the 2010 Census and 1,043,070 in the 2020 Census. The official estimate for mid 2022 is 1,099,422. Bogor is an important economic, scientific, cultural, and tourist center, as well as a mountain resort.
During the Middle Ages, the city served as the capital of the #SundaKingdom (Indonesian: Kerajaan #Sunda) and was called #Pakuan #Pajajaran or Dayeuh Pakuan. During the Dutch colonial era, it was named Buitenzorg ("without worries" in Dutch) and served as the summer residence of the Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies.
With several hundred thousand people living on an area of about 20 km2 (7.7 sq mi), the central part of Bogor is one of the world's most densely populated areas. The city has a presidential palace and a botanical garden (Indonesian: Kebun Raya Bogor) – one of the oldest and largest in the world. It bears the nickname "Rainy City" ( #KotaHujan ), because of frequent rain showers, even during the dry season.
The first mention of a settlement at present Bogor dates to the 5th century when the area was part of #Tarumanagara, one of the earliest states in Indonesian history. After a series of defeats by the neighboring Srivijaya, Tarumanagara was transformed into the Sunda Kingdom, and in 669, the capital of Sunda was built between two parallel rivers, the Ciliwung and Cisadane. It was named Pakuan Pajajaran, in old Sundanese meaning "a place between the parallel [rivers]", and became the predecessor of the modern Bogor.

Over the next several centuries, Pakuan Pajajaran became one of the largest cities in medieval Indonesia with a population reaching 48,000. The name Pajajaran was then used for the entire kingdom, and the capital was simply called Pakuan. The chronicles of that time were written in Sanskrit, which was the language used for official and religious purposes, using the Pallava writing system, on rock stellas called prasasti. The prasasti found in and around Bogor differ in shape and text style from other Indonesian prasasti and are among the main attractions of the city.
From the 9th-15th centuries, the capital moved between Pakuan and other cities of the kingdom, and finally returned to Pakuan by King Siliwangi (Sri Baduga Maharaja) on 3 June 1482 – the day of his coronation. Since 1973, this date is celebrated in Bogor as an official city holiday.
In 1579, Pakuan was captured and almost completely destroyed by the army of the Sultanate of Banten, causing the existence of the State of Sunda to cease. The city was abandoned and remained uninhabited for decades.

Following a fulfilling few days in Jakarta, Indonesia's capital, I decided to take a break from the city and catch the next train out of Stasiun Jakarta Kota.
Without any particular plan, I was excited to see where my adventure would take me. After the spectacle of the Dirgahayu TNI military display, and indeed the threat of food poisoning in Glodok market, I was hoping to find something more relaxing for my downtime over the weekend.
The next service was to Bogor, a town that (according to some on-the-move research on wikipedia) was known for its epic botanical gardens (Kebun Raya Bogor) and presidential palace (Istana Bogor).
However, as idyllic as this sounded, I also learned that Bogor is regarded as one of the most overcrowded cities in the world - with 87% humidity and 23 days of rainfall per month...
Alas, my hopes of escaping the clutches of the capital and the heat were dashed, but I was still determined to see the sights and uncover more about the Dutch colonial history.
As I ventured towards the park, past the sign for Alun-Alun Kota Bagor, I soon learned of the city's pollution, which made reaching the gardens all the more of a relief.
Having taken a few selfies with the friendly local Indonesian people, I explored the botanical gardens and made my way towards the presidential palace, and Dutch cemetery to absorb more of what Bogor is about.
Suitably impressed, I left the green oasis and made my way back to the station through the increasing traffic and pollution to catch the train back to Jakarta. But I must admit, given the unreal humidity, I was looking forward to a cold shower and couple of Bintang's at my hotel overlooking Jakarta's epic skyline.

Bogor is the 6th largest city of Jabodetabek (the Jakarta metropolitan region) and the 14th nationwide, with a population having passed 1 million; it is an important economic, scientific, cultural and tourist center, as well as a mountain resort. In 2015, the new president (Joko Widodo) moved the seat of the president from Merdeka Palace to Bogor.
In the Middle Ages, the city was the capital of Sunda Kingdom (Indonesian: Kerajaan Sunda) and was called Pakuan Pajajaran. During the Dutch colonial era, it was named Buitenzorg (meaning "Without a care" in Dutch) and served as the summer residence of the Governor-General of Dutch East Indies.
With several hundred thousand people living on an area of about 20 km2 (7.7 sq mi), the central part of Bogor is one of the world's most densely populated areas. The city has a presidential palace and a botanical garden (Indonesian: Kebun Raya Bogor) – one of the oldest and largest in the world. It bears the nickname "the Rain City" (Kota Hujan), because of frequent rain showers. It nearly always rains even during the dry season.
