Second Language Acquisition And Second Language Sensitivity
Second Language Acquisition And Second Language Sensitivity
By Dr. Parthasarathy Misra PROBE Seminar Series January 30, 2012 at Azim Premji University Abstract: SLA is not merely the acquisition of the basic language skills, it has to take into account the question of acquiring the stylistic features of the target language. The theories of Chomsky and Krashen fail to address the question of acquiring stylistic competence in the target language. A non-native learner may be a fluent speaker of a second language, but he hardly develops the language sensitivity of a native speaker. Second Language Sensitivity (SLS) is the ability of a non-native speaker to respond to the stylistic features of the target language in an appropriate manner. Therefore, our objective should not be just 'second language acquisition', we should aim at developing the learners' second language sensitivity which involves knowing not only the vocabulary, phonology, syntax and other aspects of linguistic structure but also when to speak, what to say to whom and how to say it appropriately in any given situation. Following Vygotsky, we have to admit that a second language learner can learn the target language within communities, rather than strictly as individuals. Can we make our language pedagogy more community oriented than language oriented? About the speaker: Dr. Partha Sarathi Misra has a postgraduate degree in English Language in Literary Studies from the University of Nottingham, UK and a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Calcutta. Did I mention that this is a public school? Somehow, the sanctimonious fist shaking blowhards who crouch behind monitors relying on anonymity to spew hate spittle in an effort to mask the fact that the ones theses haters hate the most stare at them in the mirror every morning, (AKA limbaugh lemmings) believe that children of ordinary means don't deserve such extravagant niceties such as second language, PE, Music, Library, hmm a full school year, hmm, teachers, hmm Schools. Alex Rawlings explains how he became fluent in 11 languages
Alex Rawlings, a 20-year-old student at Oxford University, has won a search to identify the most multilingual student in the UK Publisher Harper Collins bestowed the title on Rawlings as part of a nationwide search they launched last June in promotion of their new language and learning courses, according to the company's website. Rawlings showcased his fluency or near-fluency in 11 languages including English, Greek, German, Spanish, Russian, Dutch, Afrikaans, French, Hebrew, Catalan and Italian. Rawlings said his mother, who is half Greek, spoke to him in English, Greek and some French when he was growing up. He is currently studying German and Russian at college and taught himself other languages like Dutch because he was determined to talk to people on his travels or simply because he thought the language was interesting or beautiful. "When I was younger I always wanted to speak different languages," Rawlings said "We often visited my mum's family in Greece. My dad worked in Japan for four years. I was alway frustrated I couldn't talk to other kids in those countries because of the language." Rawlings said he's met many friends through his fluency in multiple languages and that picking up new languages gets easier over time. Rawlings plans to perfect his Russian while studying abroad in the small city of Yaroslavl, and said the next language he plans to learn is Arabic. But he says no matter how many languages he learns, he'll always have a soft spot for one. "My ...

Chinese Language Learning, Lesson 1.flv
Chinese Language Learning, Lesson 1.flv
Video by Sarat Hussain! Mandarin Chinese is the main language in Mainland China and is used on a day to day basis by more than 50% of the population. While there are a number of dialects spoken throughout Chinese provinces, the number of users of Mandarin Chinese is constantly growing, along with the growing status that now recognizes Mandarin as China's official national language. People right across the world learn Chinese language for a variety of reasons including to improve their chances of employment, to help them negotiate internal business agreements or to enhance their travel experiences. While in the past, you may have been concerned about which Chinese language to learn and master, take heart that Mandarin is the second language of over 40 million people of Chinese descent throughout the world and so it is the natural choice when it comes to deciding to learn Chinese. It is not only spoken in the People's Republic of China, Taiwan and Singapore but also used widely throughout countries in Southeast Asia and other parts of the world where Chinese-speaking communities are present. Chinese is a truly fascinating language to study and it is relatively simple to learn to speak Chinese at the fundamental level. Chinese is based on a simple structure language and character structure, and it uses varying tones to give different meanings to a word. As soon as you start to learn Chinese, you will realize though, that it is so much more than just a language though. When ...
