Seattle to Yellowstone
We took a 2011 Chevy Equinoxfrom Seattle to Yellowstone. Clark Koelsch and Director of Photography extraordinaire Chayse Irvin flew up from LA to Seattle. We hoped in the SUV and took off, driving 2000+ miles...sleeping in parking lots...and finally resting at an assisted living facility before driving a consecutive 15 hours back to Seattle.

Name of Route:
“Seattle to Yellowstone: A Path We Must Take”
I-90 East through Washington and Montana US-89 South to Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Route Description:
The Seattle skyline led us out of the city on I-5 as we merged onto I-90 eastbound and into the darkness of Washington’s endless evergreens and snow-capped mountains. Guided by the stars, we rotated driving duties as music and lyrics drifted in and out of our ears like a poetic dream.
As the sun launched over the horizon, we were introduced to the serene, flat vastness of big sky Montana, and our 2011 Chevy Equinox had witnessed our confessions, philosophies, predictions, and stories of old loves, all that comes along with your typical “guys’ weekend”. With no strict agenda, we stopped anytime we felt the need for adventure, a pee break, or maybe even a little bit of trouble.
First stop: just outside of Harrison, MT, we hiked through a wheat field and past an old Chevy Blazer from another life. We encountered a bone-yard of cattle skulls, one of which we knew had to join us for the remainder of the trip. We named our bull skull “Homer.”
We dug through old mining caves in the ghost town of Pony, MT with the guidance of a tiny LED light. As we ventured back from the smell of sulfur, we passed an old, yellow school bus, which reminded us of the film “Into the Wild”. We had to explain the movie to Homer.
In Bozeman, MT, we drove to our friend Nick’s grandma’s house for a true Montana home-cooked steak dinner and shot some pool. Hands down best steak we’d ever had in our lives and it wasn’t just the marinade. Our head’s hit the pillow hard that night when we made it to the Bozeman Retirement Home we called home on this journey. This was an assisted living facility for old folks, and a place where we made some new, old friends.
Next stop: our final destination. Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming – a place complete with wintering waterfalls, ancient trees, geo-thermal geysers, mud flats, colorful paint pots, and herds of buffalo. Ever sang the song, “Oh, give me a home, where the deer and the antelope roam?” We’re knee deep in it. Old Faithful and Boiling River were our favorite stops in Yellowstone. Although, there is no documentation of Boiling River, thanks to an unfriendly elk who ironically gave chase to our Director of Photography: Chayse Irvin. As he walked back to the Equinox to get the camera, he took a drive into the freezing cold glacial river, downstream. Homer found this very funny. So did the rest of us.
Soon, nightfall was upon us, and so were the park rangers and police officers. So far, two warnings, no speeding tickets. They’re stoked that we’re documenting our trip and traveling as far as we’ve come. Noted that the law enforcement community in Wyoming is surprisingly friendly!
We began our trip home with a stop at a Bozeman gas station followed by Ted’s Montana Grill. The bison burgers were the perfect fuel for our 10-hour drive back to Seattle. Again, more sleeping and alternating the wheel. More music scoring as we passed old steam pipes, bridges, tracing imaginary trails of stars.
One final stop before arriving home: Goldmyer Hotsprings, deep in North Bend, WA. Nature’s hot tub nestled at the foot of the Cascade Mountains. We soaked in the 120-degree water carved from an old cave, soaking and sealing the memories we made, and how we’d never forget the experiences or people we’d met along the way. Even homer.

RECOMMENDED LODGING:
24 hours of driving earned us a bunk for the night at a Montana Retirement Home/Assisted Living Facility. Made a few new old friends, too.
RECOMMENDED DINING:
Ted’s Montana Grill has some of the best bison meat Montana has to offer. It’s also an eco-friendly restaurant – when was the last time you drank from a paper straw?
RECOMMENDED MENU ITEM:
The bison burgers at Ted Montana’s Grill were so good, even the bison recommended them.
NATURAL OR CULTURAL ATTRACTION:
Pony, Montana was the perfect locale

An Interview with Mary Wilson of the Supremes
Mary: I gotta change shoes.
Mary: Okay, there we go. Now, that’s so much better.
Stuart: Ladies and gentlemen, obviously, let’s begin at the beginning. Normally, the protocol is that we give people a round of applause at the end of the event. In this particular case, we’re going to break with all the protocols, because I know a lot of people that are in the audience, I’ve seen faces, I’ve seen people with reputations in the audience, and I think that all of us can say, unanimously that, Mary probably doesn’t really deeply understand how much impact her singing and her reputation has had in our lives, the way it’s shaped the love that we’ve got for the music. So, ladies and gentlemen, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, come on.
[applause]
Stuart: So, where to start? Let’s start with a quick question. Mary, I wanted to -
Mary: Well, I need to explain something.
Stuart: Yes, my dear.
Mary: Okay, before we go any further. I’m not the founding - the only founding member of The Supremes, as most of you know. Florence, Diane and Betty McGlown, are the founding members of The Supremes, and I cannot take that credit all myself. So, the people here in the audience understand and know that, so, let’s make that very clear.
Stuart: Well, let’s start with the first question, I was watching you last night in the opening of the exhibition, singing, and sung a couple of songs for us, it was great, and one of the things that struck me is, actually, without any hesitation, I’d forgotten how great a solo singer you are, how great a singer you are. And I wonder if that actually, when we go back to The Supremes, there’s been criticisms in the past, for example, that Diana was actually the least good singer of The Supremes, she had a very specific voice. And I just wanted to get your thoughts about - just describe the different voices that were in The Supremes.
Mary: Well, I don’t think that you can - anyone said that Diane was the least good singer in The Supremes, that’s not true, and I’ve never ever said anything like that. My point was always to sort of bring forward the fact that Florence Ballard was a great singer, and I was also a good singer. So, I think people - and sometimes when we tried to explain or say things like that, people think that you’re saying that the other person is not that good. That was not my point, at all. My point was saying that Florence Ballad was a Gospel, strong singer, Diane was a pop singer and I was kind of, like, the ballad singer, so, we each had our own, you know, good points.
Stuart: And at a time, and in a city, which probably, without any hesitation, you could say was probably, at its time, the greatest musical city in the world, bar none. I mean, if you actually compare and contrast it with the other great regional city of the time, Liverpool, many of the Liverpool acts moved down to London and whatever, but there you were, in Detroit, touring the world, phenomenal place. Just to get some grasp on this, simply your high school alone, who did you go to school with?
Mary: Well, in Detroit, we all kind of grew up in the projects. Detroit was really a small - is, a small town. And Smokey Robinson, I guess, was in the same - lived in the neighbourhood as Diana Ross. I went to high school with some of The Miracles, which was Bobby Rogers. The person that did a lot of singing - or writing, with Smokey Robinson, was Al Gutierrez, Marvin Tarplin, and he and I went to high school together. Florence went to the same high school as some of The Temptations. So, we all came from pretty much the same neighbourhood, even though it was kind of large.
Stuart: And when did you first remember the sense that Mary Wilson had the desire to be a singer? Where did the desire come from?
Mary: Well, you know, people like Little Richard, you know, there was Jackie Wilson, there was Frankie Lyman and The Teenagers was one of my favourite ...
Stuart: He was a bad boy, though, wasn’t he?
Mary: He was a what?
Stuart: He was a bad boy.
Mary: I don’t know, I was too young.
Stuart: No, he was a very bad boy, Mary.
Mary: Well, you know, doctors don’t tell secrets on other doctors. But, we all kind of bad later on. But, yeah, you know, from just - oops, we don’t want to go there right now - but, anyway, when I was born, my mother said that when the doctors spanked me, I started singing. So, I mean, I did that, but I never ever thought that it was different, I thought that everybody woke up in the morning singing. You know, I thought that everyone did that. I didn’t realise, until I became one of the members of The Primettes, that that was something very special. Then I realised that that talent was special, but, prior to that, I would just, you know, woke up and start singing, " ooooooo," you know, whatever, and just ...
Stuart: And say a little bit about that photograph, because it connects you back to, like, many Detroit people of your generation, to the Souther

02.14.2010 Grace Summit Sermon - Galatians 3-4 - Equal in Christ
We’ve been laying a foundation – and talking about faith and works and the Law – some of these theological issues – summing up , and I’ll take about ten minutes to talk about this – and then what we will do - in the middle of Galatians 3 and 4, there is a gem of a passage – maybe one of Paul’s best – for sure, some of his most radical statements in the New Testament – and we will close off by looking at that. It sits at the center – the whole point of all this theology. From here on out it will be practical. When Cindy and I were hiking the trails of the Colorado mountains last summer – you mostly go through the woods and follow little creeks. Every now and then you have these great views – it was a 5 mile hike and there was this mountain lake – you ask – how did this get here? Well, obviously from all the snow – and they are crystal clear and filled with trout. Picturesque, dry, brilliant sun, and you take your shoes off and that water is 32 and a half degrees. And in some ways, these verses are tucked here like that – hiking through the theology to find some of these gems. We tend to take it for granted and therefore, are not as grateful as we ought to be. The reason we need to know theology is it makes us grateful to know what God has done for us.
Lord, we do want to understand – not just to have a bunch of knowledge, but to KNOW a God who loves us. We want to know what You’ve done for us and how much You love and care for us – in every aspect of our lives. Thank You, that You gave Your life for us that we might have life – we are thankful for what You have done. Speak to our hearts now. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
The Righteous shall live by faith – this is the key to Galatians – the key to the Bible…
Galatians 3: 6 Even so Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.
When Adam and Eve sinned – they lost a right relationship with God. God has given us choice – the freedom to make a decision – to love, follow, obey Him – or NOT! When Adam and Eve were being tempted by the serpent – God wasn’t there. Obviously, God is everywhere, but He hid Himself in that time. If God would have just stepped in at that moment – do you think Eve would have eaten? No. But if God was there – there wouldn’t have been choice and freedom. This freedom thing is so important to God that He stepped out of the story to allow these two humans to make a decision – even if it was a wrong one. They lost their relationship with God – and from then on – everyone born is born outside of a relationship with God. God made a promise to Abraham, and Abraham believed it.
7 Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, [saying], "All the nations shall be blessed in you." 9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer.
From the beginning of all of this, the promise was not just to the Jews, but to all people. This concept – Jews and Gentiles coming together as one as God’s people is not new – but the Jews had lost sight of the fact that that was God’s original desire.
10 For as many as are of the works of the Law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, to perform them." 11 Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, "The righteous man shall live by faith. "
We need to become – to get right with God through faith, because, no matter how hard we try to follow God’s law, we won’t. The very best don’t do it (other than Jesus, of course). In one sense, the Law is just a curse, because we can’t do it.
12 However, the Law is not of faith; on the contrary, "He who practices them shall live by them." 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-- for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"-- 14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
We have this promise to Abraham – this Law given to Moses – and the ppromise – belief in the promise makes one right with God. The promise – in v. 16
16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. The Scripture does not say "and to seeds," meaning many people, but "and to your seed," meaning one person, who is Christ.
Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of that promise. Where is the Law?
19 Why the Law then? It was added because of transgressions, having been ordained through angels by the agency of a mediator, until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made.
The promise has been given – that is how man gets right with God – and in the meantime – before Christ came – they continued sinning. Th
