Kel-Tec SU-16C: "Featherweight Firepower" By Nutnfancy, Pt 1
Kel-Tec SU-16C: "Featherweight Firepower" By Nutnfancy, Pt 1
PART 1 OF 3: The Kel-Tec SU-16C is a super lightweight, portable rifle possessing excellent firepower, good accuracy, and reliability. At a mere 4.7 lbs the SU-16C enjoys an amazingly versatile POU: backpacking gun, patrol officer carbine, civilian sheepdog weapon, or aircrew armament. As shown with Burris "Speed Dot" sight , 30 rd USGI mag (empty), M6 laser/light, and single point sling the SU-16C weighs still a svelte 5.8 lbs. The SU-16C is a high value gun and competes against that also excellent Ruger Mini-14 in the high value .223 carbine category (subject to change with pricing). It takes the ubiquitous AR-15 magazines which gives it plentiful and useful firepower. Integrating a built in Picatinny rail, the SU-16C can easily take optics to increase night sighting and overall hit potential. I recommend sticking to very lightweight sighting options on the gun to retain its portability and speed in handling. The iron sights however are good using a ghost-ring aperture system. They are capable of good accuracy at 50 yards as shown with my target proof. The SU-16C should be considered to have a break-in period and one model I shot experienced many stoppages until this phase was complete. Thereafter (and after cleaning and lubing), that example became 100% reliable with a variety of ammunition. Ensure the bolt, lock lugs, and bolt carrier wear a good lubricant like BreakFree CLP or Slip2000 to help ensure reliable functioning. Some users polish the bottom of the bolt ...

Cold Steel Roach Belly: Featherweight Slasher
Cold Steel Roach Belly: Featherweight Slasher
For around $12 you can get a super light, excellent defensive blade in the Cold Steel Roach Belly. Yes the steel is just 4116 Krupp but its razor sharp, finish is nice and bright (great for a sheepdog defensive knife), its fast in hand, wicked sharp, and is forgetfully light in carry. It weighs out, with sheath, at an incredible 3.5 oz. Thats because CS wisely choice to keep the blade thin (but adequately thick at 2.5mm) and put on a super light handle. The spine has some purposeful jimping as well. The blade shape is deadly with excellent draw cut and piercing capability. Downsides are the slick handle that is a little short (especially for extraction from the sheath) and the non-QD sheath that leans more towards utility than tactical use. But the sheath is also lightweight and wont retain water. Even as a EDC FIXED BLADE choice, Roach Belly should excel. And theres no brand myopia here at all (another Nutnfancy term): its just Cold Steel happens to be the one producing these well-made, high value knives that provide such great versatility. I dont see any other 2.6 oz SS well-designed slashers out there at $12. So if the budgets tight and you want a fixed blade with decent reach (4.5, good for the weight) consider this featherweight knife. The CS RB wont bust the budget or your loadout weight; nor will it impress your friends. But at 3.5 oz total weight its an easy proposition to always have with you, quietly awaiting defensive duty that hopefully will never come. I have ...

CRKT M16 EDC Compact knife: Featherweight EDC
CRKT M16 EDC Compact knife: Featherweight EDC
Carried for a long time, I know the Columbia River Knife and Tool (CRKT) Compact M16 EDC pretty well. And there's a lot to like: light 2.1 oz, fast opening, tight lockup with LAWKS safety, nicely designed clip, attractive finishing, good steel (154CM this one), and priced resonably. It's a tiny carry package that packs a 3" blade. Downsides would be a non-reversible clip, sometimes sticky liner lock, and a limited utility spear point blade for EDC tasks (I prefer more sweep, different blade shape). But at around $50 and at 2.1 oz for this length of blade, it's a still a good EDC choice for most./////// Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 5 out of 10

S&W; M&P; 360 revolver: Hard Kickin' Featherweight
S&W; M&P; 360 revolver: Hard Kickin' Featherweight
If you can manage the recoil, you will love it. Weighing only 11.4 oz with its titanium cylinder and scandium frame, the little S&W Model 360 M&P is a joy to carry on a daily basis. Both officers and civilian "sheepdogs" give glowing reports on how comfortable the gun is to tote around. In my "Mobility vs Firepower" philosophy vids (www.youtube.com the 360 personifies the option of Mobility and the attendant security of always having something to answer a lethal force encounter. But as with all lightweight full-size caliber guns, there are several pricetags for this portability and comfort in carry. First off, it's downright expensive... about double the price of similar lightweight revolvers like Taurus offerings. Secondly, its recoil is stout especially with .357 Magnum or .38 Special +P loads. Get ready to man up shooting this gun... it is not pleasant. But with some practice and good technique it is manageable and this is a gun designed for carry and not plinking. Thirdly, this little revolver has very limited firepower at just five rounds. Just about every semi-auto option will beat that and they will offer greater slimness in carry (as shown). You'll have to take some speed loaders with you and even then you better make your shots count. Understand these limitations, train for them, and you find the 360 to be an outstanding backup piece or primary lightweight carry option. With its super quality fit and finish, high viz fiber optic sights (on this model, Tritium dot ...
