Pines are trees in the genus ''Pinus'' (), in the family Pinaceae. They make up the monotypic subfamily Pinoideae. There are about 115 species of pine, although different authorities accept between 105 and 125 species.

Etymology

The modern English name ''pine'' derives from Latin ''pinus'' by way of French ''pin''; similar names are used in other Romance languages. In the past (pre-19th century) they were often known as ''fir'', from Old Norse ''fyrre'', by way of Middle English ''firre''. The Old Norse name is still used for pines in some modern north European languages, in Danish, ''fyr'', in Norwegian ''fura/fure/furu'', Swedish, ''furu'', and ''Föhre'' in German, but in modern English, ''fir'' is now restricted to Fir (''Abies'') and ''Douglas-fir (''Pseudotsuga'').

Taxonomy, nomenclature & codification

Pines are divided into three subgenera, based on cone, seed and leaf characters:

''Pinus'' subg. ''Ducampopinus'', the foxtail or pinyon group

''Pinus'' subg. ''Pinus'', the yellow or hard pine group

''Pinus'' subg. ''Strobus'', the white or soft pine group

Distribution

Pines are native to most of the Northern Hemisphere. In Eurasia, they range from the Canary Islands, Iberian Peninsula and Scotland east to the Russian Far East, and in the Philippines, north to just over 70°N in Norway, Finland and Sweden (Scots Pine) and eastern Siberia (Siberian Dwarf Pine), and south to northernmost Africa, the Himalaya and Southeast Asia, with one species (Sumatran Pine) just crossing the Equator in Sumatra to 2°S. In North America, they range from 66°N in Canada (Jack Pine and Red Pine), south to 12°N in Nicaragua (Caribbean Pine). The highest diversity in the genus occurs in Mexico and California.

Pines have been introduced in subtropical and temperate portions of the Southern Hemisphere, including Chile, Brazil, South Africa, Tanzania, Australia, Argentina and New Zealand, where they are grown widely as a source of timber. A number of these introduced species have become invasive, threatening native ecosystems.

Morphology

Pines are evergreen, resinous trees (or rarely shrubs) growing 3–80 m tall, with the majority of species reaching 15–45 m tall. The smallest are Siberian Dwarf Pine and Potosi Pinyon, and the tallest is a 268.35-foot (81.79-meter) tall Ponderosa Pine located in southern Oregon's Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest.

The bark of most pines is thick and scaly, but some species have thin, flaking bark. The branches are produced in regular "pseudo whorls", actually a very tight spiral but appearing like a ring of branches arising from the same point. Many pines are ''uninodal'', producing just one such whorl of branches each year, from buds at the tip of the year's new shoot, but others are ''multinodal'', producing two or more whorls of branches per year. The spiral growth of branches, needles, and cone scales are arranged in Fibonacci number ratios. The new spring shoots are sometimes called "candles"; they are covered in brown or whitish bud scales and point upward at first, then later turn green and spread outward. These "candles" offer foresters a means to evaluate fertility of the soil and vigour of the trees.

Pines are long-lived, typically reaching ages of 100–1,000 years, some even more. The longest-lived is the Great Basin Bristlecone Pine, ''Pinus longaeva'', one individual of which, at around 4,800 years old, is one of the world's oldest living organisms.

Foliage

Pines have four types of leaf:

''Seed leaves'' (cotyledons) on seedlings, borne in a whorl of 4–24.

''Juvenile leaves'', which follow immediately on seedlings and young plants, 2–6 cm long, single, green or often blue-green, and arranged spirally on the shoot. These are produced for six months to five years, rarely longer.

''Scale leaves'', similar to bud scales, small, brown and non-photosynthetic, and arranged spirally like the juvenile leaves.

''Needles'', the adult leaves, which are green (photosynthetic), bundled in clusters (''fascicles'') of 1–6, commonly 2–5, needles together, each fascicle produced from a small bud on a dwarf shoot in the axil of a scale leaf. These bud scales often remain on the fascicle as a basal sheath. The needles persist for 1.5–40 years, depending on species. If a shoot is damaged (e.g. eaten by an animal), the needle fascicles just below the damage will generate a bud which can then replace the lost leaves.

Cones

Pines are mostly monoecious, having the male and female cones on the same tree, though a few species are sub-dioecious with individuals predominantly, but not wholly, single-sex. The male cones are small, typically 1–5 cm long, and only present for a short period (usually in spring, though autumn in a few pines), falling as soon as they have shed their pollen. The female cones take 1.5–3 years (depending on species) to mature after pollination, with actual fertilization delayed one year. At maturity the female cones are 3–60 cm long. Each cone has numerous spirally arranged scales, with two seeds on each fertile scale; the scales at the base and tip of the cone are small and sterile, without seeds. The seeds are mostly small and winged, and are anemophilous (wind-dispersed), but some are larger and have only a vestigial wing, and are bird-dispersed (see below). At maturity, the cones usually open to release the seeds, but in some of the bird-dispersed species (e.g. Whitebark Pine), the seeds are only released by the bird breaking the cones open. In others, the ''fire climax pines'' (e.g. Monterey Pine, Pond Pine), the seeds are stored in closed ("serotinous") cones for many years until a forest fire kills the parent tree; the cones are also opened by the heat and the stored seeds are then released in huge numbers to re-populate the burnt ground.

Ecology

Pines grow well in acid soils, some also on calcareous soils; most require good soil drainage, preferring sandy soils, but a few (e.g. Lodgepole Pine) will tolerate poorly drained wet soils. A few are able to sprout after forest fires (e.g. Canary Island Pine). Some species of pines (e.g. Bishop Pine) need fire to regenerate, and their populations slowly decline under fire suppression regimes. Several species are adapted to extreme conditions imposed by elevation and latitude (e.g. Siberian Dwarf Pine, Mountain Pine, Whitebark Pine and the bristlecone pines). The pinyon pines and a number of others, notably Turkish Pine and Gray Pine, are particularly well adapted to growth in hot, dry semi-desert climates.

The seeds are commonly eaten by birds and squirrels. Some birds, notably the Spotted Nutcracker, Clark's Nutcracker and Pinyon Jay, are of importance in distributing pine seeds to new areas. Pine needles are sometimes eaten by some Lepidoptera (butterfly and moth) species (see list of Lepidoptera that feed on pines), the Symphytan species Pine sawfly, and goats.

Uses

Pines are among the most commercially important of tree species, valued for their timber and wood pulp throughout the world. In temperate and tropical regions, they are fast-growing softwoods that will grow in relatively dense stands, their acidic decaying needles inhibiting the sprouting of competing hardwoods. Commercial pines are grown in plantations for timber that is denser, more resinous, and therefore more durable than spruce (''Picea''). Pine wood is widely used in high-value carpentry items such as furniture, window frames, paneling, floors and roofing, and the resin of some species is an important source of turpentine.

Many pine species make attractive ornamental plantings for parks and larger gardens, with a variety of dwarf cultivars being suitable for smaller spaces. Pines are also commercially grown and harvested for Christmas trees. Pine cones, the largest and most durable of all conifer cones are craft favorites. Pine boughs, appreciated especially in wintertime for their pleasant smell and greenery, are popularly cut for decorations. A number of species are attacked by nematodes, causing pine wilt disease, which can kill some quickly. Pine needles are also used for making decorative articles like baskets, trays, pots, etc. This Native American skill is now being replicated across world. Pine needle handicrafts are made in the US, Canada, Mexico, Nicaragua and India. Pine needles serve as food for various Lepidoptera. See List of Lepidoptera which feed on Pines.

Because pines have no insect or decay resistant qualities after logging, they are generally recommended for construction purposes as indoor use only (ex. indoor drywall framing). This wood left outside can not be expected to last more than 12–18 months depending on the type of climate it is exposed to. It is commonly referred to by several different names which include North American timber, SPF (spruce, pine, fir) and whitewood.

Food uses

Some species have large seeds, called pine nuts, that are harvested and sold for cooking and baking.

The soft, moist, white inner bark (cambium) found clinging to the woody outer bark is edible and very high in vitamins A and C. It can be eaten raw in slices as a snack or dried and ground up into a powder for use as a thickener in stews, soups, and other foods, such as Finnish pine bark bread (pettuleipä). Adirondack Indians got their name from the Mohawk Indian word ''atirú:taks'', meaning "tree eaters".

A tea made by steeping young, green pine needles in boiling water (known as "tallstrunt" in Sweden) is high in vitamins A and C.

Loreena Isabel Irene McKennitt, CM, OM, (born February 17, 1957) is a Canadian singer, composer, harpist, accordionist and pianist who writes, records and performs world music with Celtic and Middle Eastern themes. McKennitt is known for her refined, clear soprano vocals. She has sold more than 14 million records worldwide.

Early life

McKennitt was born in Morden, Manitoba of Irish and Scottish descent to parents Jack (a livestock dealer) and Irene McKennitt (a nurse). She moved to Stratford, Ontario in 1981, where she still resides.

When Loreena was young she wanted to become a veterinarian but she found that music chose her rather than she it. Developing a passion for Celtic music, she learned to play the Celtic harp and began busking at various places, including St. Lawrence Market in Toronto in order to earn money to record her first album.

Career

McKennitt's first album, ''Elemental'', was released in 1985, followed by ''To Drive the Cold Winter Away'' (1987), ''Parallel Dreams'' (1989), ''The Visit'' (1991), ''The Mask and Mirror'' (1994), ''A Winter Garden'' (1995), ''The Book of Secrets'' (1997), ''An Ancient Muse'' (2006), ''A Midwinter Night’s Dream'' (2008), and ''The Wind That Shakes The Barley'' (2010). All of her work is released under her own label, Quinlan Road.

In 1990, McKennitt provided the music for the National Film Board of Canada documentary, "The Burning Times" a feminist revisionist account of the Early Modern European witchcraft trials. The main theme would later be rerecorded by her and her band and called "Tango for Evora," a track which appears on her album, The Visit.

In 1993, she toured Europe supporting Mike Oldfield. In 1995, her version of the traditional Irish song "Bonny Portmore" was featured in the ''Highlander'' series. McKennitt's single "The Mummers' Dance" received airplay in North American markets during the spring of 1997, and was used as the theme song for the short-lived TV series, ''Legacy''.

Her music appeared in the movies ''The Santa Clause'', ''Soldier'', ''Jade'', ''Holy Man'', ''The Mists of Avalon'' and ''Tinkerbell''; and in the television series ''Roar'', ''Due South'', ''Ever After'', and ''Full Circle (Women and Spirituality)''.

Personal life

In 1998, McKennitt's fiancé Ronald Rees, his brother Richard (not the British actor) and their close friend Gregory Cook drowned during a boating accident on Georgian Bay. She was deeply affected by the event and subsequently founded the ''Cook-Rees Memorial Fund'' for Water Search and Safety in the same year.

At the time of the incident, she was working on an live album of two performances called ''Live in Paris and Toronto''. The proceeds from this album were donated to the newly created memorial fund, totaling some three million dollars. After the release of the live album, McKennitt decided to substantially reduce the number of her public performances and did not release any new recordings until the studio album ''An Ancient Muse'' in 2006.

Genre and work

McKennitt's music has generally been classified as World / Celtic music even though it contains aspects and characteristics of music from around the globe and is sometimes classified as Folk music in record stores.

Before McKennitt composes any music, she engages in considerable research on a specific subject which then forms the general concept of the album. Before creating ''Elemental'' and ''Parallel Dreams'', she traveled to Ireland for inspiration from the country's history, folklore, geography and culture. The album ''The Mask and Mirror'' was preceded by research in Spain where she engaged in studying Galicia, a Celtic section of Spain, along with its abundant Arabic roots. The result was an album that included elements of Celtic and Arabic music. According to the jacket notes, her album ''An Ancient Muse'' was inspired by travels among and reading about the various cultures along the Silk Road.

McKennitt is compared to Enya, but McKennitt's music is more grounded in traditional and classical invocations, using literary works as sources of lyrics and springboards for interpretation such as "The Lady of Shalott" by Lord Tennyson, "Prospero's Speech" (the final soliloquy in William Shakespeare's ''The Tempest''), "Snow" by Archibald Lampman, "Dark Night of the Soul" by St. John of the Cross, Dante's Prayer, William Blake's "Lullaby", Yeats' "The Stolen Child", "It was an English Ladye Bright" by Sir Walter Scott and "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes.

Court case

In 2005, McKennitt was involved in an acrimonious court case in England when her former friend and employee, Niema Ash, published a book which contained intimate details of their friendship. McKennitt argued that much of the book contained confidential personal information which Ash had no right to publish. The English courts found that there had indeed been a breach of confidence and a misuse of McKennitt's private information, and the case is likely to set important precedents in English law on the privacy of celebrities. The House of Lords affirmed the lower court's decisions in 2007.

2006 and later

In September 2006, McKennitt performed live at the Alhambra. The performance premiered on PBS and in August 2007 was released on a three-disc DVD/CD set titled ''Nights from the Alhambra.''

In 2008, McKennitt wrote and composed a song she titled "To The Fairies They Draw Near" as the theme song for Disney's direct-to-video animated film ''Tinker Bell.'' She also provided the narration for the film.

In early 2008, she returned to Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios to record ''A Midwinter Night’s Dream,'' an extended version of her 1995 mini-album ''A Winter Garden: Five Songs for the Season.'' The album was released on October 28, 2008.

Since the release of ''An Ancient Muse,'' Loreena has toured consistently, with a European and North American tour in the spring of 2007, an extensive cross Canada and United States tour in the fall of 2007, a summer tour of Europe in 2008 and a Mediterranean tour in the summer of 2009 with stops in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, Hungary and Italy.

On September 17, 2009, McKennitt announced that she planned to release a two-disc album titled "A Mediterranean Odyssey" in the fall of 2009. The first CD, "From Istanbul to Athens," consisted of ten new live recordings made during McKennitt’s 2009 Mediterranean Tour, including songs she had never before recorded in concert. The second CD, "The Olive and the Cedar," had a Mediterranean theme which McKennitt herself curated. It contained previously released studio recordings created between the years of 1994 and 2006.

November 16, 2010 saw the US release (November 12 for Europe) of McKennitt's latest studio album, "The Wind That Shakes the Barley." Recorded at the Sharon Temple, Ontario, it consists of nine traditional Celtic songs. "Every once and again there is a pull to return to one's own roots or beginnings, with the perspective of time and experience, to feel the familiar things you once loved and love still," says Loreena.

Documentaries

Late in the 1990s, McKennitt created ''No Journey's End,'' a half-hour documentary, for American television. In it, she discussed the influences behind her music. ''No Journey's End'' contained excerpts from several songs from the albums ''Parallel Dreams,'' ''The Visit,'' and ''The Mask and Mirror.'' It also shows live performances of the songs "The Lady of Shalott," "Santiago," and "The Dark Night of the Soul." It was later released on DVD and VHS, the former also containing music videos for "The Mummers' Dance" and "The Bonny Swans." A bonus copy of the DVD was included with the 2004 remastered versions of McKennitt's CDs.

In 2008, Loreena released ''A Moveable Musical Feast,'' based on her 2007 ''An Ancient Muse'' tour. The DVD included interviews with Loreena, her band, crew, fans and professional colleagues from the Canadian music industry.

Dirty Projectors are a Brooklyn-based experimental rock band led by Dave Longstreth. They have released seven full-length albums through 2010. The band currently consists of Longstreth, Amber Coffman (vocals, guitar), Angel Deradoorian (vocals, keyboard, samples, guitar, bass), Brian McOmber (drums), Nat Baldwin (bass), and Haley Dekle (vocals).

Biography

Longstreth's first album, ''The Graceful Fallen Mango'', was released in 2002 under his own name and introduced his distinctive use of song arrangements and his combination of lo-fi and hi-fi production. The album was a project Longstreth began as a freshman while studying at Yale University. With the help of Adam Forkner of Yume Bitsu, Longstreth recorded and released ''The Glad Fact'' on the Western Vinyl label under the name "The Dirty Projectors." In 2005, the band released ''The Getty Address'', a concept album about musician Don Henley that features extensive orchestral and choral accompaniment. The diverse, stripped-down ''New Attitude EP'' followed in 2006 and featured inklings of the band's later vocal interplay and guitar work.

In 2007, the band released ''Rise Above'', an album of Black Flag songs as re-imagined from memory. The album introduced the band's distinctive contrast between Longstreth's vocals and the harmonies of Amber Coffman and Susanna Waiche, who was later replaced by Angel Deradoorian. In support of the album, the band performed songs for a Take-Away Show acoustic video session shot by Vincent Moon.

In April 2008, The Dirty Projectors signed with Domino Records, and the label announced the release of their next full-length album, ''Bitte Orca'', for June 9, 2009. That year, the band also collaborated with David Byrne on the song "Knotty Pine" for the compilation album, ''Dark Was the Night'' produced by the Red Hot Organization. Byrne joined the Dirty Projectors onstage to perform this song, along with "Ambulance Man," another collaborative track not included on the compilation, at the "Dark Was the Night Live" concert at New York City's Radio City Music Hall on May 3, 2009. “Stillness Is the Move” was the first single released from "Bitte Orca", a West African - R&B; influenced hybrid, sung by Coffman. The song was inspired by the Wim Wenders film “Wings of Desire”.

On May 8, 2009, members of Dirty Projectors collaborated with Björk to perform an original composition by Longstreth, written for five voices and acoustic guitar, as part of a charity concert to benefit Housing Works, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing shelter for homeless men, women, and children suffering from AIDS. The concert was held at the Housing Works Bookstore & Café in downtown New York City.

The band was to release a new EP in September 2009 entitled ''Temecula Sunrise''. While the EP was never released, two of its tracks, "Ascending Melody" and "Emblem of the World," were released as a free download single by the band in early 2010.

Amber Coffman was featured on "Hold On", a track from Rusko's debut album, OMG, released in June 2010 by Diplo's Mad Decent record label.

In June 2010, Dirty Projectors announced the release of Mount Wittenberg Orca, a digital-only EP with Björk. The album, based on the artists' previous collaboration in 2009, was released on June 30.

Dirty Projectors released an expanded edition of Bitte Orca on September 28, 2010. The double album included live performances, several B-sides, and a Bob Dylan cover.

Musical Style

While often associated with the late 2000s New York indie rock scene, critics have likened The Dirty Projectors to musicians from many genres. For example, critics have compared them to New Wave artists David Byrne and Squeeze, pop stars Beyoncé and Mariah Carey, and Progressive rock musicians Frank Zappa and Yes. In a 2009 interview, Longstreth embraced some such comparisons but expressed a strong dislike for classic rock, commenting, "Steely Dan is a band I’m not that into," "I’m not a huge Yes guy," and "Frank Zappa I fucking hate."

Bob Sinclar, originally spelled "Sinclair" - (born Christophe Le Friant, 10 May 1969 in Douarnenez, France), is a French record producer, House music DJ, remixer and owner of the label Yellow Productions.

Career history

Sinclar started DJing in 1987, when he was 17 years old, specialising in funk and hip-hop music, named ''"Chris The French Kiss"''. His first club hit was "Gym Tonic", which was co-produced by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk, featuring vocals illegally taken from a Jane Fonda fitness tape.

Le Friant is known for popularising the "French touch" of house music with heavy use of sampled and filtered disco strings. His track "I Feel For You", a tribute to French musician Cerrone, from his second album ''Champs Elysées'', hit #9 in the UK Top 40. On track "Darlin'", he worked with vocalist James "D-Train" Williams.

Le Friant has also worked under other pseudonyms. Under the aliases The Mighty Bop and ''Reminiscence Quartet'', he has dabbled in hip-hop and acid jazz. He also created the ''Africanism'' project, where an ensemble of artists produce house music with a combination of Latin, jazz, African and tribal flavours.

In 2005, he scored a worldwide hit with the single "Love Generation", that reached #1 in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Hungary and Mexico. The song was a huge success throughout Europe, peaking #2 in Netherlands and it stayed 39 weeks in the Belgian Ultratop Singles chart. It made the top fifteen in several other countries such as Argentina, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK.

It became one of the official anthems for the 2006 FIFA World Cup held in Germany. The follow-up hit was "World, Hold On", that features Steve Edwards and also managed to chart in the top ten in most European countries. "Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now)" followed on 22 August 2006. The remix of "World, Hold on" by E-Smoove was nominated for a Grammy in 2007 in the category of Remixed Recording. Also, "World, Hold On" topped in Billboard's as Number One Hot Dance Club Play Single of 2006, beating Madonna and Christina Aguilera. The fourth single of the album Western Dream, called "Tennessee" was supposed to be released in April 2007, but has been cancelled due to the rumour of a new album being released.

On May 21, 2007, he released the ''Soundz of Freedom'' album. The remix of "Rock This Party" reached number 1 in the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart. His latest album, ''Born in 69'', was released on 7 May 2009. The first single of the album is ''Lala Song''.

In 2010, Bob Sinclar released ''Made In Jamaïca''. The album contains two additional new songs "I Wanna" featuring Shaggy and "Rainbow of Love", and also features his best greatest hits such as "Love Generation", "Give A Lil' Love" among others but in a reggae musical style. The album is nominated for "Best Reggae Album" for the 53rd Grammy Awards. This is Bob Sinclar's second Grammy nomination.

In summer 2011 Sinclar had a hit throughout Europe with the remix of Raffaella Carrà's song ''A far l'amore comincia tu'' (''You start making love''), renamed ''Far l'amore'' (''Making Love'').

Sinclar is now working on a dance track with British pop songstress Sophie Ellis-Bextor.

Gary Pine is a Jamaican singer best known for the vocals on several Bob Sinclar songs, including "Love Generation", "Shining from Heaven", "Miss Me", "Give a Lil' Love", and "Sound of Freedom".

He replaced Bob Marley as lead singer of the The Wailers. He has recently put out the album ''New Day Ryzin'. ''

He has an upcoming release entitled "Overtime" which is a collaboration with dance musician Marc Mysterio, who played the track on 14 February 2009 during an episode of BBC Radio 1's ''Judge Jules Global Warmup Radio Show''.
