Iran's Supreme Leader: Nuclear Weapons 'A Sin'
Via McClatchy: "Iran's chief negotiator, Saeed Jalili, took center stage after the day of talks, appearing at a post-conference press briefing under a banner headlined, in English, "Nuclear energy for all, nuclear weapons for none." He referred to the banner — which also had the pictures of five Iranian nuclear scientists who were assassinated, presumably at Israeli behest — and also reaffirmed the fatwa or order by Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, declaring possession of a nuclear weapon to be "a sin"...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Roy Gutman: www.mcclatchydc.com Which countries have nuclear weapons and how many do they have? www.youtube.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Germany Supports Israel in Nuclear Talks: Germans Blast Grass' Poem About Dolphin Submarines
Germany Supports Israel in Nuclear Talks: Germans Blast Grass' Poem About Dolphin Submarines
A new German survey on Iran and Middle East peace showed that 80% of Germans believe the international community should prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. The same percentage also supported a ban on weapons sales to Iran, and 75% said Germany should support democratic opposition groups in Iran. Questions regarding weapons sales are important because Germany is the third-largest arms exporter after the United States and Russia, and Germany currently supplies much of Israel's imported weaponry and military equipment. The controversy over the prose poem by Günter Grass largely stemmed from his criticism of Germany's delivery of Dolphin-class submarines to Israel. These small, diesel-powered submarines are a crucial part of the Israeli Navy, and they are rumored to provide Israel with the capability to launch nuclear warheads from outside the country. The survey results and the overwhelmingly negative reaction to Grass' poem show that Germans generally do support Israel against Iran. Although Germany does have US-made nuclear weapons under a weapons sharing arrangement, Germany did not pursue nuclear weapons technology independently, and it supports the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. With this background, Germany has been increasingly involved in discussions over Iran's nuclear program. It was the only country not a permanent member of the UN Security Council to participate in the recent "P5+1" negotiations with Iran in Istanbul. The Middle East coordinator for ...

United States Nuclear Weapons Testing Review - 1945 to 1962
During the 1940's, 50's and 60's the United States government authorized a number of nuclear weapons tests. These tests were filmed and documented, and have recently been declassified by the United States government. This 25 minute film shows highlights from these early test, including the various delivery methods employed such as static tests, air launched & ballistic missile tests. There were many failures and unexpected outcomes during these tests and these are also shown. The footage used in this review was taken from longer documentaries which are now also be made available on this youtube channel.

B53 Nuclear Bomb Dismantlement
B53 Nuclear Bomb Dismantlement
The elimination of the B53 by Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is consistent with the goal President Obama announced in his April 2009 Prague speech to reduce the number of nuclear weapons. The President said, "We will reduce the role of nuclear weapons in our national security strategy, and urge others to do the same." The dismantlement of the last remaining B53 ensures that the system will never again be part of the US nuclear weapons stockpile. As a key part of its national security mission, NNSA is actively responsible for safely dismantling weapons that are no longer needed, and disposing of the excess material and components.

Continued Nuclear Arms Race and Nuclear Testing at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Continued Nuclear Arms Race and Nuclear Testing at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Abby and Robbie Martin grew up in Pleasanton, CA, a city located ten miles from the Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL), a secret nuclear weapons production facility. They initially set out to explore the psychological impacts of taking nuclear testing into virtual space. But as their investigation unfolded, they found that the LLNL—in conjunction with Site 300—have built an impressive greenwashing PR campaign cloaking a dark reality. Despite a moratorium on nuclear testing, the nuclear arms race continues unabated at very high costs. In addition to the startling cases of LLL's mismanagement of dangerous materials and 'accidental' releases, the facilities are still testing every radioactive component of a nuclear bomb in open air, according to sources. Childhood cancer rates are six times higher for children born in Livermore; and the amount of radiation that has been expelled from the lab since its inception is equivalent to that released from the bombing of Hiroshima. Most disturbingly, the Livermore community is largely unaware of what the lab is actually doing and what its potential impacts are on their health and the environment. Could A Bomb Strike On An Iranian Nuclear Facility Trigger A Nuclear Explosion?
Could A Bomb Strike On An Iranian Nuclear Facility Trigger A Nuclear Explosion?
President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently raised the specter of military strikes against Iran to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon. , Is there any chance a strike on one of Iran's nuclear facilities could accidentally trigger a mushroom cloud? No. A nuclear detonation cannot occur without a substantial amount of highly enriched uranium, which analysts say Iran probably doesn't have. And even if they're wrong, it's still incredibly unlikely a missile strike would kick off a nuclear explosion. Instead, it would likely just scatter the fissile material. But what if Iran had enriched uranium already assembled into a bomb, and a US or Israeli missile strike hit it dead-on? Even then, a minor nuclear detonation is the worst-case scenario. The chain reaction in a nuclear bomb is carefully choreographed, with the usual strategy being to surround the fissile material with conventional explosives and then detonate the weapon with a finely tuned electrical charge. All of the conventional explosives surrounding the fissile material must go off within microseconds of each other in order to contain the uranium for maximum destructive impact. A missile strike on a nuclear weapons facility would almost certainly disrupt the synchronization of the charges. It would still be messy though. The explosion could release gaseous uranium near the facility, causing kidney problems and possible cancer if inhaled or ingested. The strike might also release ...

Operation Dominic - 1962 American Atomic Bomb Tests - Nuclear Weapons
Operation Dominic - 1962 American Atomic Bomb Tests - Nuclear Weapons
Operation Dominic was a series of 36 nuclear test explosions conducted in 1962 by the United States in the Pacific. This test series was scheduled quickly, in order to respond in kind to the Soviet resumption of testing after the tacit 1958-1961 test moratorium. Most of these shots were conducted with free-fall bombs dropped from B-52 bomber aircraft. Twenty of these shots were to test new weapons designs; six to test weapons effects; and several shots to confirm the reliability of existing weapons. The Thor missile was also used to lift warheads into near-space to conduct high altitude nuclear explosion tests; these shots were collectively called Operation Fishbowl. Operation Redwing - United States Nuclear Weapons Test
Operation Redwing - United States Nuclear Weapons Test
Operation Redwing was a United States series of 17 nuclear test detonations from May to July 1956. They were conducted at Bikini and Enewetak atolls. The primary intention was to test new, second-generation thermonuclear devices. Also tested were fission devices intended to be used as primaries for thermonuclear weapons, and small tactical weapons for air defense. Redwing demonstrated the first US airdrop of a deliverable hydrogen bomb - test "Cherokee". Because the yields for many tests at Operation Castle in 1954 were dramatically higher than predictions, Redwing was conducted using an "energy budget" - there were limits to the total amount of energy released, and the amount of fission yield was also strictly controlled. Fission, primarily "fast" fission of the natural uranium tamper surrounding the fusion capsule, greatly increases the yield of thermonuclear devices, and contributes the vast majority of the fallout - fusion being a relatively clean reaction. Operation Ivy (Long Version) - United States Nuclear Weapons Test
Operation Ivy (Long Version) - United States Nuclear Weapons Test
Operation Ivy was the eighth series of American nuclear tests. Its purpose was to help upgrade the US arsenal of nuclear weapons in response to the Soviet nuclear weapons program. The two explosions were staged in late 1952 at Enewetak Atoll in the Pacific Proving Ground in the Marshall Islands. The first Ivy shot, Mike, was the first successful full-scale test of a multi-megaton thermonuclear weapon ("hydrogen bomb") using the Teller-Ulam design. Unlike later thermonuclear weapons, Mike used deuterium as its fusion fuel, maintained as a liquid by an expensive and cumbersome cryogenic system. It was detonated on Elugelab Island yielding 10.4 megatons, almost 500 times the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. 8 megatons of the yield was from fast fission of the uranium tamper, creating massive amounts of radioactive fallout. The detonation left an underwater crater 6240 ft (1.9 km) wide and 164 ft (50 m) deep where Elugelab Island had been. Following this successful test, the Mike design was weaponized as either the EC-16 or TX-16, but it was quickly abandoned for solid-fueled designs after the success of the Castle Bravo shot. The second test, King, fired the largest nuclear weapon to date using only nuclear fission (no fusion nor fusion boosting). This "Super Oralloy Bomb" was intended as a backup if the fusion weapon failed. King yielded 500 kilotons, 25-40 times more than the nuclear weapons dropped during World War II.
