Chinook Sunrise
Chinook Sunrise
Chinook is a native Indian word used for foehn winds on the lee side of mountain ranges and particularly used in the northwest Pacific region. It is characterized by strong and unusually warm winds, often with a sudden and drastic temperature increase at onset. Another common feature is a Chinook arch which is a stationary band of clouds caused by a wave generated by orographic lifting of air passing the mountains. In front of the Chinook arch is a region of sinking air, giving a strip of clear sky which allows for outstanding sunrise/sunset displays under the arch. That's where Fairbanks sits when southern winds are forced across the Alaska Range. Before the Chinook set in, interior Alaska had been in a deep freeze for two weeks with temperatures averaging about -40F/C. The warming came gradually over a few days, topping at about +50F/+10C later this day.

Anatomy of a perfect sneak
Anatomy of a perfect sneak
frankritcey.blogspot.com is where I write about this "perfect sneak" that I did on five mule deer in Kenna Cartwright Park, the day of with winter solstice. I was in my finest ninja form that day and swept up the hill like a foehn wind (google that one). Actually it would be a foehn wind in reverse but only a few would get the obtuse reference anyhow. Thanks for watching and please feel free to comment.

Approaching Innsbruck airport from the east with circling runway 08. Departure 08. First 3:20 are in fast forward. Foehn condition gives us some good turbulence. Apologize for the music. ;)

Foehn
Foehn
Today was a typical Foehn day, warm, windy and very dry. Foehn is a southerly wind in the northern alps, it is dry because the humidity rained off when the air was cooling when being pushed over the alps, when it flows down toward the lowlands it becames warm due to adiabatic heating.

Föhn in Luzern / Foehn in Lucerne (13.03.2011) #1
Föhn in Luzern / Foehn in Lucerne (13.03.2011) #1
As part of a strong southerly current and pressure differences of about 10 hPa/mbar (hectopascal/millibars) between the Southern and the Northern side of the Alps, the „Foehn" was pushed out of the Alpine valleys to Lucerne between 15-16 o'clock. The temperature rose to 14.4 degrees, the relative humidity temporarily dropped to 36 %. The official Lucerne weather station of MeteoSwiss recorded wind gusts up to almost 40 km/h ; right on the lake, the gusts were stronger, likely around 50 km/h.
