The term hawk can be used in several ways:

In strict usage in Australia and Africa, to mean any of the species in the subfamily Accipitrinae, which comprises the genera ''Accipiter'', ''Micronisus'', ''Melierax'', ''Urotriorchis'' and ''Megatriorchis''. The large and widespread ''Accipiter'' genus includes goshawks, sparrowhawks, the Sharp-shinned Hawk and others. These are mainly woodland birds with long tails and high visual acuity, hunting by sudden dashes from a concealed perch.

More generally (especially in North America) to mean falcons or small to medium-sized members of the Accipitridae– the family which includes the "true hawks" as well as eagles, kites, harriers and buzzards.

Loosely, to mean almost any bird of prey outside of the order Strigiformes (owls).

The common names of birds in various parts of the world often use ''hawk'' in the second sense. For example, the Osprey or "fish hawk"; or, in North America, the various ''Buteo'' species (e.g., the Red-tailed Hawk, ''B. jamaicensis''). In February 2005, the Canadian ornithologist Louis Lefebvre announced a method of measuring avian "IQ" in terms of their innovation in feeding habits. Hawks were named among the most intelligent birds based on his scale. Hawks are widely reputed to have visual acuity several times that of a normal human being. This is due to the many photoreceptors in the retina (up to 1,000,000 per square mm for ''Buteo'', against 200,000 for humans), an exceptional number of nerves connecting these receptors to the brain, and an indented fovea, which magnifies the central portion of the visual field.

John Edward Hawkins (November 15, 1969 – May 1, 2006), better known as H.A.W.K. or Big Hawk was an American rapper from Houston, Texas and a founding member of the late DJ Screw's rap group the Screwed Up Click.

Biography

Born John Edward Hawkins in Houston, Texas on November 15, 1969. He grew up on the dead end block of MLK with his younger brother, Patrick "Fat Pat" Hawkins. He started rapping in 1992 when Pat took him to DJ Screw’s house, an upcoming mixtape producer and DJ in the southern area of Houston. In April 2006 Hawk married his longtime girlfriend and mother of his two children, Meshah Henderson.

Career

In 1994 Hawk, Fat Pat, DJ Screw and some of their friends, Lil' KeKe and Koldjack, collaborated to form the group D.E.A. and Dead End Records (named for the dead end block of Martin Luther King Blvd where Hawk grew up in Houston). In late 1995 D.E.A. released an original independent album entitled, “Screwed For Life” featuring Lil' Keke, Big Pokey and the rest of the S.U.C. After the deaths of Hawk’s brother (Fat Pat) and DJ Screw and the incarceration of many others SUC members, Hawk’s ultimate mission and goal became keeping the “Ghetto Dream” alive. In 1999 Hawk participated in a Southside Playaz compilation album titled “You Got Us Fuxxed Up,” with Mike D, Claydoe and other members of the S.U.C. Hawk released his solo album, "Under Hawk's Wings" on Dead End Records in 2000 and had recorded with Lil' Flip, Lil' Keke, Big Moe, Z-RO and was featured on the Lil' Troy hit "Wanna Be A Baller."

Big Hawk appeared on numerous mixtapes from artists in the Houston underground rap scene. After Screw's death in 2000, he was the main person responsible for keeping the S.U.C. together, so much so that his nickname was the Five Star General of the Screwed Up Click. He collaborated with Lil' O on the smash hit, “Back Back” Next, he partnered with Game Face Records in 2002 and released his first album under his label Ghetto Dreams Ent., self titled, “HAWK.” With the hit song, “U Already Know,” the album charted the Billboard’s list of top R&B; and Rap Albums at no. 45. It was at Game Face Records where Hawk met and clicked with a young up and coming group called the GritBoyz and an artist named Starchy Archy. Hawk and Ghetto Dreams Ent. teamed up with Presidential Records in 2003 to release “A Bad Azz Mix Tape Vol. II.” A year later he and Lil' Keke teamed up to release “Wreckin 2K4” with Presidential Records as well. It was around this time when the original S.U.C. members, along with M.J. (of Southside Studios) started collaborating on a group/compilation album titled “The Takeover.” Trae tha truth made an album dedicated to BIG HAWK called ''Life Goes On.''

Hawk was featured on the popular single "Swang" by Trae that included a tribute to Fat Pat in 2005. In 2006, Hawk, along with Clint Dempsey of the U.S. National Soccer team recorded a song for Nike's "Joga Bonito" World Cup soccer promotion called "Don't Tread". He was part of Pepsi's Yahoo! "Houston Mic Pass" with Lil' Flip, Chamillionaire, Trae, Chingo Bling, Bun B, Short Dawg, Magno and Mike D. Since his death, Hawk has been featured on several tracks including Lil O's "I Do" single, "Down In Texas" off of the 2008 A.B.N. album ''It Is What It Is'', and Big Unk's "I'ma Beast" to name a few.

Death

Hawkins, 36, was shot to death Monday, May 1, 2006, outside of a home in south Houston. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the rapper had gone to visit a friend's house at night and was walking from his car when he was shot several times. There is no known suspect.

Shortly after his death Bun B, a fellow Houston rap artist, spoke about Hawkins in an interview with the ''Houston Chronicle'' saying, "There were no chinks in this man's moral armor, because he was a rapper there will be people who will take his death the wrong way, but he was a peaceful guy and a family man who had no beefs with anybody."

Antony Gordon Hawksworth, better known as Tony Hawks, is a British comedian and author.

Early life

Born in Brighton in 1960, Hawks was educated at Brighton Hove and Sussex Grammar School (1971–76) (became Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College in 1975) and Brighton College (1976–78). He stated during an appearance on ''I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue'' that he briefly attended the University of Manchester.

Career

He first attempted to break into show business as a serious singer-songwriter, but it was with a novelty record that he had his first brush with fame. As leader of the trio Morris Minor and the Majors, he reached number 4 in the UK charts with the Beastie Boys parody, ''Stutter Rap (No Sleep Til Bedtime)'' in 1988. It went on to sell 220,000 copies, and was number one in Australia. The follow-up, a pastiche of Stock Aitken Waterman called ''This Is the Chorus'', fared less well.

A TV series followed from this, ''Morris Minor's Marvellous Motors'', written by and starring Hawks. In it the fictional bandleader attempted to maintain his pop career while running a garage. It ran for one series in 1989.

Hawks performs stand-up comedy, and is a regular on TV and radio panel games in the UK, including ''I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue'', ''Just a Minute'', ''The Unbelievable Truth'' and ''Have I Got News for You'', although he first came to prominence as one of two resident performers — the other was Jo Brand — on semi-successful BBC monologue show ''The Brain Drain''.

He has also appeared in ''Red Dwarf'' in a number of supporting roles, on several occasions as a voice artist for intelligent machines. Hawks provided the voice of a vending machine in "Future Echoes" and "Waiting for God" and the voice of a suitcase in "Stasis Leak", and appeared onscreen as The Guide in "Better Than Life", The Compere in "Backwards", and Caligula in "Meltdown". He also provided the voice-over for a restaurant ad in the episode "Me²", although this role was uncredited. In the first few seasons of "Red Dwarf," Hawks performed a warm-up act for the live audience before taping began to get them laughing. His continuous presence during the early seasons of the series led to his being nicknamed "The Fifth Dwarfer". More recently he has appeared in the television series ''Grumpy Old Men'' and a contestant on the BBC quiz show ''School's Out''.

In November 2010 he was a guest on a number of TV and radio programmes to discuss the film version of Round Ireland with a Fridge including Simon Mayo's Radio 2 show, ''Loose Ends'', Radio Wales and Radio Scotland. He was also a contestant on a special edition of ''Mastermind'' for Children in Need and featured as part of Comic Relief 2011.

In March 2011 Tony travelled to Japan to appear at the Okinawa International Film Festival where Round Ireland with a Fridge was nominated for Best Comedy.

In September he will begin his first National Theatre tour since 2003 with a new one man show called Random Fun. The 32 dates begin in Lincoln in September 16th and will finish in Swansea on December 7th.

''Round Ireland with a Fridge'': His first book was an account of his attempt to hitchhike around Ireland with a fridge to win a bar bet. It sold over 800,000 copies. (ISBN 0-09-186777-0)

''Playing the Moldovans at Tennis'': His second book, also the result of a drunken bet (with the comedian Arthur Smith), this time involved an attempt to beat each member of the Moldova national football team in a game of tennis, based on the theory that people good at one sport aren't necessarily good at others. ''One Hit Wonderland'': His third book, describes his attempt, over 10 years after his first, to write a second hit song. This culminates in him performing on Albanian television with Norman Wisdom and Tim Rice (ISBN 0-09-188210-9)

Film adaptations

The full-length feature film version of his book ''Round Ireland with a Fridge'', starring Tony, Josie Lawrence, Ed Byrne and Sean Hughes, was released in Autumn 2010. Filming on the follow-up, ''Playing the Moldovans at Tennis'', with Steven Frost, Angus Deayton, Morwenna Banks and Laura Solon, has just been completed.

Other activities

Tony Hawks donated half of the royalties from his book ''Playing the Moldovans at Tennis'' to a trust fund for Moldova, which was used to open the Hippocrates Centre, a medical centre that provides rehabilitative therapy for disabled children from socially vulnerable families. Hawks continues to support Hippocrates through fundraising and personal involvement.

Hawks is the co-founder and public face of the "Tennis for Free" campaign which aims to make Britain's existing municipal tennis facilities available to all.

Hawks is currently collaborating with Chesney Hawkes on various songs available from a MySpace website.

He is frequently confused with Tony Hawk, largely because the latter's video game franchise uses the possessive apostrophe ("Tony Hawk's"). Hawks maintains a list of emails intended for the skateboarder and his mischievous responses to them on his website. On 2 January 2008 he appeared on an edition of ''Celebrity Mastermind'', with Tony Hawk as his chosen specialised subject. Hawks noted that his correspondents "might be able to do backside varials but they can't spell to save their lives."

Hawk Nelson is a Christian rock band from Peterborough, Ontario. The band has become very popular in the Christian music scene and was voted "Favorite New Artist" by CCM Magazine in their February 2006 ''Reader's Choice Awards''. In 2006 Hawk Nelson won a #1 spot on VH1's top 20 video countdown with "The One Thing I Have Left" music video.

Biography

Prior to the formation of Hawk Nelson, Dunn, Clark, and Paige had formed the Peterborough-based group called ''SWISH'' (they also used the name ''Reason Being'' briefly), while Biro sang lead vocals in a four-piece group called the ''Cheese Monkeys from Planet Nine'' from Barrie, Ontario.

After the band formed, they played and toured independently in Ontario, Canada, before being signed with Tooth & Nail Records, largely on the recommendation of Trevor McNevan, the lead singer of fellow Tooth & Nail band Thousand Foot Krutch and FM Static. McNevan, also from Peterborough, Ontario, is credited with discovering the band. In July 2004, Hawk Nelson released their major label debut ''Letters to the President''. It was produced by Aaron Sprinkle and McNevan, who also co-wrote the album's fourteen songs. He has also appeared on some of the band's songs, as well as in their video for the song "California".

The band has achieved some success in the mainstream as well. They portrayed The Who on an episode of the NBC drama ''American Dreams'', and they recorded a song named "Bring 'Em Out" for the 2005 motion picture ''Yours, Mine and Ours'' featuring Drake Bell. This song and another hit song "The Show" were both used on Sunday Night Football commercials. "Things We Go Through" from ''Letters to the President'' was also featured in ''Yours, Mine and Ours''.

In October 2005, the band re-released ''Letters to the President'', with new material including their cover of The Who's "My Generation", three acoustic versions of some of their hits, and a limited edition cover. Hawk Nelson plays the party band for the film ''Yours, Mine and Ours'' (2005). Their songs "The Show" and "Something on my Mind" were featured in the game Thrillville in 2006.

The band released their second studio album, ''Smile, It's the End of the World'', on April 4, 2006. The album was also co-written by Trevor McNevan of Thousand Foot Krutch. The album won a GMA Canada Covenant Award for "Modern Rock/Alternative Album of the Year" in 2006. The album's first single, "Everything You Ever Wanted", went on to hit #1 for 9 weeks on the ''R&R;'' Christian CHR chart, and was the fourth most-played song of 2006. The band spent the summer of 2006 touring the major Christian music festivals, and also took part in Jeremy Camp's ''Beyond Measure'' tour. Hawk Nelson released a three-track Christmas EP titled ''Gloria'' on November 21, 2006, and in winter of that year they toured with TobyMac's Winter Wonder Slam tour along with The Afters, Family Force 5, and Ayiesha Woods.

Bulletproof Records and producer Ralph Sall have assembled the compilation ''Charlotte's Web: Music Inspired By The Motion Picture'' featuring music by Christian artists including Hawk Nelson, Amy Grant, and Billy Ray Cyrus, which was released December 12, 2006. In addition, Bob Carlisle, Leigh Nash (Sixpence None The Richer), and The Send have all contributed exclusive tracks.

Hawk Nelson performed in 2006 on the Fringe Stage at Creation Festival Northwest, then again on the main stage at Creation in 2007. They performed sometime between July 25–28, 2007, at Creation Festival Northwest on the Main Stage, and they played again on the Fringe Stage at Creation Festival Northeast sometime between June 27–30, 2007. In 2007, (and again in 2009), Hawk Nelson performed at Winter Jam with a variety of other Christian bands, which were Newsong, Jeremy Camp, Steven Curtis Chapman, Sanctus Real, and Britt Nicole. Hawk Nelson also toured with MxPx, Run Kid Run, Project 86, The Fold, and The Classic Crime on the Tooth and Nail Tour (Green Tee Show Photos.

In 2007, Aaron Tosti left the band to pursue other musical ventures and was replaced by Justin Benner. Justin had previously toured with Hawk Nelson before with The Send.

Hawk Nelson's third full album, ''Hawk Nelson Is My Friend'' was released on April 1, 2008, and featured songs co-written by Trevor McNevan of Thousand Foot Krutch, Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace and Richard Marx.

In 2008, the band also contributed a cover of "Don't You (Forget About Me)", originally by Simple Minds, off the ''Don't You Forget About Me: The Covers'' EP. The song was also featured in back-to-school commercials for J.C. Penney.

In January, 2008 The band headlined their own tour, that they called the Green T Tour, which also featured Capital Lights and Run Kid Run (Green Tee Stage Show Photos).In the summer of 2008, Hawk Nelson played their second annual Faith Nights Baseball Tour.

Hawk Nelson was nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award in the category for Best Recording Package, for their 2008 album ''Hawk Nelson Is My Friend''.

On July 21, 2009 Hawk Nelson released their second single from their fourth album ''Live Life Loud'' called "The Meaning Of Life", and on August 8, the song "Alive" began to be played on Christian Radio. They released their fourth album, ''Live Life Loud'' on September 22, 2009. The title song "Live Life Loud" was made available in the Rock Band store during the first week of April 2010. The song "Live Life Loud" was featured in the trailer for the movie, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules".

On October 18, 2010, they released the tracklisting and release date of their fifth studio album, Crazy Love. which was released in stores February 8, 2011.

Meredith Godreau is an American singer-songwriter performing under the pseudonym Gregory and the Hawk. Active since 2003, Godreau initially enjoyed independent success with 2 EPs and a full length album selling a total of 15,000 copies.

Biography

Originally from Medfield, Massachusetts, Godreau moved to upstate New York when she was twelve. This was where she learned a number of instruments, including piano, clarinet, oboe, violin and viola before settling on her "$70 Christmas gift": the guitar.

Godreau then took on the pseudonym Gregory and the Hawk to avoid being pigeonholed as a singer-songwriter, despite citing her influences as Nick Drake, Liz Phair and PJ Harvey. The name was derived from her brother, Gregory, and his imaginary childhood hawk. This was when she released her demo EP, including early versions of the popular "Boats and Birds" and "Isabelle".

Boats and Birds

In 2006, Godreau released the ''Boats and Birds'' EP containing the songs "Isabelle" and "Boats and Birds". Both songs received a great amount of attention on social networking website MySpace increasing Gregory and the Hawk's popularity, but the latter took the unsigned artist to a new level.

FatCat Records

''In Your Dreams'', Gregory and the Hawk's first full length album, was released the following year and received many positive reviews. But it wasn't until a show in Godreau's native Brooklyn that FatCat Records stumbled across her. A month later she was in the studio recording her FatCat debut, ''Moenie and Kitchi'', which was released in October 2008.
