Byron O. Thomas, (born March 20, 1969) better known by his stage name Mannie Fresh, is currently an artist and hip-hop producer who records for Def Jam South and his own division Chubby Boy Records. He is probably most famous for his time producing tracks for Cash Money Records from 1993 to 2005, and one half of the hip-hop duo Big Tymers with Birdman.

    Biography

Thomas began loving music at the age of nine as a local New Orleans DJ, playing songs at parties and clubs. In the late 1980s he began a partnership with New Orleans rapper MC Gregory D. They released their first album together ''Throwdown'' in 1987, with Mannie Fresh producing and MC Gregory D rapping. They would release two more records together in the late 1980s and early 1990s. After their last album together, in 1993 Thomas met Bryan "Baby" Williams who gave him an opportunity to become the in-house producer of his record label Cash Money Records. With Williams's help, Thomas made chart-topping albums for the Hot Boys, which was composed of Lil Wayne, B.G., Juvenile, and Turk, producing all of the group’s singles. He also produced all tracks on the members’ solo works as well. Later, Thomas formed the Big Tymers along with Williams, as Mannie Fresh and Birdman respectively, and released five albums. In 2004, he released his own debut solo album ''The Mind of Mannie Fresh'', which consisted of 30 tracks and featured the single “Real Big,” which peaked at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2005, he split from Cash Money for financial reasons, and later joined Def Jam South, to which he is currently signed. On October 27, 2009, Mannie Fresh released his second solo album, ''Return of the Ballin'''. The album was entirely produced by Fresh himself and featured prominent guests Rick Ross and Lil Jon.

James Tapp, Jr. (September 9, 1977 – November 26, 2003), better known by his stage name Soulja Slim, was an American rapper who achieved massive success on Master P's No Limit record label. He also achieved fame throughout New Orleans and Nation Wide from his work done with B.G., UNLV, and other local artists. He is known for writing the U.S. #1 hit "Slow Motion".

    Life and music career

James Tapp was raised in the Magnolia Projects in the 3rd Ward of New Orleans. He attended Booker T. Washington High School before dropping out of school his sophomore year. Tapp released his debut album, ''Soulja fa Lyfe'', on Parkway Pumpin' Records in 1994 under the name Magnolia Slim. In 1995, he released the four-song e.p. ''The Dark Side'' on Hype Enough Records. In the same year, the song "You Got It" appeared on No Limit Records double-CD compilation ''Down South Hustlers: Bouncin' and Swingin' ''. In 1998, Tapp, now calling himself Soulja Slim, released ''Give It 2 'Em Raw'' on No Limit Records with his single and video "From What I Was Told." Soulja Slim was convicted of armed robbery and incarcerated. He reappeared three years later with ''Streets Made Me'', which was again released on the No Limit label. From there, he started his own label, Cut Throat Committee Records and released ''Years Later'' in late 2002. In 2003, he released ''Years Later...A Few Months After'', his last album before his death. The album featured the hit "I'll Pay for It". In 2003 he also collaborated with fellow New Orleans rapper Juvenile to make the song "Slow Motion". The song was released on Juvenile's album ''Juve the Great'' and reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It was Soulja Slim and Juvenile's first #1 hit, and as the song was released after Soulja Slim's death he became only the sixth artist to have a posthumous #1 hit.

    Shooting and death

On Thanksgiving Eve, November 26, 2003, Slim was en-route to a performance when he was shot four times; three times in the face, and once in the chest, in front of his mother's home in the Gentilly. Soulja Slim was buried with his Cutthroat Committee charm and jewelry and also the leather camo clothes he's shown wearing on the cover of Give It 2 em' Raw. On New Years Eve, December 31, 2003, police arrested 22 year old Garelle Smith in connection with Tapp's murder but was released months later. In August 2011, reports emerged that Smith had himself been found dead with gunshot wounds to the face and chest.

The Chopper City Boyz was a New Orleans-based rap group signed to rapper B.G.'s Chopper City Records. The group was formed in 2003 consisting of B.G.'s younger brother Hakizzle, Gar and Snipe, then VL Mike became an addition to the group in early 2004. The group had been featured on B.G.'s solo albums as well as several mixtapes between 2003 and 2006. The group released their debut album with B.G. titled We Got This in 2007, spawning the single, "Make 'Em Mad", which was produced by David Banner.
