Rosemary Lee - Square Dances
Rosemary Lee - Square Dances
Part of Dance Umbrella 2011, SQUARE DANCES was a free outdoor event in four squares in Central London. Like migrating birds arriving as unexpectedly as they dispersed, up to 200 dancers of all ages fleetingly animated these quiet atmospheric spaces in an epic yet intimate way. Audiences chose to journey between the squares to see all four dances or enjoy a single one. Each distinctive event was accompanied by the resonant sound of live bells ranging from a single toll to a specially commissioned score by Terry Mann. With its quietly intense style, SQUARE DANCES transformed audiences' perception of these peaceful spaces, heightening the atmosphere and providing powerful yet delicate images. SQUARE DANCES was commissioned and produced by Dance Umbrella in association with Rosemary Lee Projects and Arts Admin. Supported by The Place. Square Dances was sponsored by Bloomberg and the National Lottery Fund. Film by Roswitha Chesher. danceumbrella.co.uk

Square Dance patter tip with all dance programs
Square Dance patter tip with all dance programs
Called by Vic Ceder at the Fall Berkshires C4 Weekend in Lenox, MA on Oct. 22, 2011. A group of volunteer dancers returned from their lunch early to dance a special tip in which each sequence was from a different dance program. The 10 sequences are: Mainstream, Plus, A1, A2, C1, C2, C3A, C3B, C4 (easy), C4 (hard), but were called in a random order. This footage was gathered as part of an effort (www.SquareDanceHistory.org) to document and illustrate different types of modern square dancing, as well as different regional styles of traditional squares. In Modern Western Square Dancing the dancers learn a vocabulary (69 calls for Mainstream, over 1000 for C4) but do not memorize a dance pattern. Instead the caller puts the calls together in an ever changing order and the dancers respond in real time. While the dancers were familiar with the vocabulary, they had never heard the particular sequences of calls before, and did not know what was going to be called. See en.wikipedia.org for more info. Dancers familiar with MWSD may enjoy watching with the sound turned off and trying to match each sequence to its corresponding dance program by watching the patterns. Here is where each sequence starts in the video: 00:20 01:10 01:56 02:40 03:13 04:16 04:56 06:34 07:34 08:25
