Fiddle Tune a Day - Day 39 - Leather Britches
Fiddle Tune a Day - Day 39 - Leather Britches
Leather Britches is another tune that I learned when I stayed with Dick and Lisa Barrett as a teen. I remember Dick telling me to leave it exactly how I learned it for now, and that if I play it like that for a year or so that I could change it then. (I had a tendency to make a tune my own before I really knew it back then.) I played it note for note for about a year, and then added a verse that I learned from a Terry Morris Transcription. Later I added some Major Franklin licks, but I still play a lot of it like Dick played it. SIDE NOTE: The name Leather Britches refers to dried beans, not Lederhosen. Tonight's Fiddle Tune comes to you from Avogadro's Number, and features Brent Hawley on Guitar, David Dale on Bass, Matt on Mandolin, and Wayne Wagner on Squeeze Box. Listen up because Brent really tears up his solo. Enjoy! Fiddle Tune a Day - Day 48 - Temperance Reel
Fiddle Tune a Day - Day 48 - Temperance Reel
I first learned Temperance Reel, because my mom was learning it on the hammered dulcimer, and I had to learn it so that I could help her learn it. I had heard it many times before, and I've always thought it was a cool tune. I like the way it goes back and forth between major and minor. Considering the title, I think that the minor parts might be the booze talking, and in the major parts, it's the sobriety. More about Vi Wickam Website: www.vithefiddler.com Facebook www.facebook.com Twitter: www.twitter.com Temperance Reel according to the Fiddler's Companion TEMPERANCE REEL. AKA and see "Devil in Georgia [1]" (Doc Roberts title), "Teetotaler('s Reel)," "Oh My Foot," "Old Tiddley-Toe," "Kingsport," "Rocky Road to Denver," "Six Hand Reel," "Where is My Other Foot?" Irish, American; Reel. USA; New England, Michigan, West Virginia. G Major. Standard tuning. AABB. The tune, a North American version of the Irish "Teetotaler," dates from the 19th century. Ken Perlman (1979) is of the opinion the tune is related to a Co. Kerry polka entitled "Pigtown" (which also goes by several other names including "Pigtown Fling", "Ston(e)y Point [1]" and others). Ford prints a version under the title "Six Hand Reel," presumably collected in Missouri, as were most of his tunes, however, other Missouri titles include "Rocky Road to Denver" (Roy Wooliver/Gene Goforth) and "Where is My Other Foot?" (Lonnie Robertson). The earliest American recording of the tune is by Joseph Samuels in 1919 ...

Signup for Vi Wickam's Fiddle Tune a Day: www.vithefiddler.com Angeline the Baker is possibly the seminal old-time fiddle tune. The only thing we were missing in this recording of one of the Jams from the Colorado Old Time Fiddler's Contest was my friend Bob Zuellig singing it. Angeline the baker lives in our village green, The way I always loved her beats all you ever seen. CHORUS: Angeline the baker, her age is forty-three, I bought her candy by the peck, and she won't marry me. 2. Her father is the miller, they call him Uncle Sam. I never will forget her, unless I take a dram. CHORUS. 3. Angeline is handsome, Angeline is tall, They say she sprained her ankle a-dancing at the ball. CHORUS. 4. She can't do hard work because she is not stout, She bakes her biscuits every day, and pours the coffee out. CHORUS. 5. I'll never marry no other girl, no matter where I go. I said I'd marry Angeline just twenty years ago. CHORUS. 6. The last time I saw her was at the county fair. Her father run me almost home and told me to stay there. CHORUS.

Fiddle Tune a Day - Day 10 - Wink the Other Eye
Fiddle Tune a Day - Day 10 - Wink the Other Eye
Wink the Other Eye is a fun fiddle tune that I learned from Missouri (now Colorado) fiddler Bob Zuellig. Bob learned it from a recording of Art Galbraith Playing it. I think it's a really fun tune to play twin fiddle harmony to it. According to the fiddler's companion: Wink the other Eye is an Old‑Time, Breakdown. USA; Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri. G Major. Standard tuning. AABB (Beisswenger & McCann, Christeson): AA'BB' (Phillips). The tune is meant to be played at a tempo slower than that for a standard breakdown. Charles Wolfe says it is a "fine old Sequatchie Valley (Tenn.) fiddle band tune known to area fiddlers as diverse as Tom Douglas and Curly Fox" (Charles Wolfe, The Devil's Box, vol. 15, No. 4, Dec. 1981, pg. 56). Early recordings (Meade, 2002) are by Theron Hale & His Daughters (1928), Jess Young's Tennessee Band (1929) and Hack's String Band (1930). It appears to be well‑known in those states just west of the Mississippi River, as it is in Tennessee and Kentucky. Guthrie Meade (1980) associates the title with songwriter WT Lytton, who penned "When You Wink the Other Eye" in 1890 (popularised by Marie Lloyd), a slightly risqué variety piece which begins: Lyrics: *** Say boys, what do you really mean when you wink the other eye? Why, when you tell us where you've been do you wink the other eye? You tell your wives such stories, you can give them just a few, "Just met an old acquaintance" or "The train was over-due." And when the simple wife believes that every ...

Fiddle Tune a Day - Day 74 - Smith's Reel
Signup for Fiddle Tune a Day at: http:www.vithefiddler.com Until I have read the Fiddler's Companion story on Smith's Reel, I won't know the origin of it. I have long thought that Smith's Reel was a fun tune, but haven't ever spent time working out something really cool with it. Jeff Guernsey played a cool version of it at the Grand Master's Fiddler Championship a few years back, and I incorporated a little bit of his stuff into my version. I think I worked it out originally from the version in Cole's 1000 fiddle tunes. Let's hope the Fiddler's Companion mentions Irish. It is a reel after all. :) Ironically, according to Fiddler's Companion, it may or may not be Irish. Smith's Reel according to the Fiddler's Companion SMITH'S REEL. A widely disseminated tune in North America, probably originating from its printing in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883). It is heard in a variety of styles from swing to Maritime. It is well-known among Irish musicians as the hornpipe "Kitty's Wedding," one of the most popular in the repertoire, however, it may or may not be Irish in origin. Hell Among the Moonshiners - Fiddle Tune a Day - Day 80
Signup for Vi Wickam's Fiddle tune a Day at: www.vithefiddler.com I first heard this tune on Matt Wyatt's album, back porch fiddling. I asked Matt about it, and he learned it off of a recording of Benny Thommasson playing it. I have added a little bit of my own variation to it. According to my sources, it's an old fiddle tune that has a few other names that it's known by. I think it's a particularly fun tune to play and since it's a Bb hornpipe, I guess that's no surprise. As as Side note, I highly recommend Matt Wyatt's Album for some really fun fiddle playing, with Justin Branum playing some great rhythm guitar behind him. Matt's chuckles when he plays something clever really adds to the happy nature of this album wyattviolinshop.com Hell Among the Moonshiners According to the Fiddler's Companion HELL AMONG THE MOONSHINERS.
