James Price Point Monsoon Vine Thickets (remant rainforest)
Monsoon Vine Thickets are a rainforest allied ecosystem found in discrete patches along the Dampier peninsula in the west Kimberley. A great diversity of plants found within the vine thickets provide important habitat for the fauna such as Agile Wallaby, Rose Crowned |Fruit Dove, Flying Foxes and the Great Bowerbirds. The area in and around vine thickets are of great significance to indigenous people on the Dampier Peninsula. As a cultural teaching and ecological resource, vine thickets contain many traditional food sources, valuable and reliable sources of nutritious bushtucker and medicine, water and significant sites. Monsoon vine thickets are semi deciduous. Towards the end of the dry season up to 50% of the plants lose their leaves. They rely on the wet season rain to help them flourish. It is believed that the high humidity along the coastal fringe allows them to survive long periods of no rain and provides some protection from fires. Many patches are associated with ground water springs, shallow aquifers and seasonal wet areas. The closed canopy and large fruiting trees, not present in much of the surrounding landscape, provide refuge, habitat and nesting sites for many avian and reptilian species. Monsoon Vine Thickets function as a network ecosystem and the movement of frugivorous (fruit- eating) birds, bats and mammals through themselves ensures sufficient species migration and gene flow to maintain the plant and animal communities in their fragmented state ...

Spider Monkeys of Jungle Friends
stores.shop.ebay.com Spider monkeys are native to tropical forests from southern Mexico to Brazil. They require large tracts of undisturbed forest and feed on ripe fruits. Spider monkeys live in evergreen rainforests, semi deciduous and mangrove forests, almost never coming to the ground. Spider monkeys travel in groups between two and nine but form loose groups of 15 to 25 individuals. These spider monkeys live at Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary. Jungle Friends Primate Sanctuary is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, located on 12 acres in Gainesville, Florida. Jungle Friends is accredited by the American Sanctuary Association and The Association of Sanctuaries. We rescue and offer a permanent, safe haven for monkeys from around the United States who have been abused, confiscated by authorities, retired from research, or who are ex-pets. At this time, Jungle Friends is the sanctuary home for 117 monkeys with an ever-growing waiting list.

Plant ID: Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia)
Plant ID: Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) Genus: Ulmus Species: parvifolia Family: ULMACEAE Common name: Chinese Elm, Chinese Weeping Elm, Lacebark Elm Plant type: Evergreen/Partly Deciduous Origin: China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea Elm trees have suffered massively from a fungi disease that is spread by the elm bark beetle (first noticed around 1910 and still active and varying today). The disease found its way to areas where elm trees had no previous exposure to the problem. Elms in these newly infected areas had little resistance or evolved defence to the disease and were wiped-out in large numbers. To this day there is wonderful work done on the cultivation of stronger resilient elms. Non affected elms cultivated in Australia around the early part of the 19th century are some of the world's most significant remaining mature elms today. Habit/Form: A handsome enjoyable tree with graceful personality, generally small to mid-sized, single trunked (can develop more than 1 leader) with a weeping broad dome. Can have a dense rounded canopy producing good shade. Can be large in width/broad dome. Usual height around 12-15m. Some parvifolia bark are flaky-chip, creating a beautiful distinctive ochre-red/orange-light brown mottle/speckle mixed with grey-brown and glaucous-olive drab, that sheds (the shedding is not as prominent as L. confertus or A. costata, nor classic fibrous or furrowed either). Other parvifolia do not shed and instead remain grey-brown all year round. Moderately ...

Howler Monkeys at ACES in Belize
Endangered Guatemalan Black Howler Monkeys, Alouatta pigra, live in troops of up to 20 monkeys depending on the season. Found in Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, this species lives in tropical and semi-deciduous rain forests. They are the loudest of the mammals, with their vocalizations being heard up to 3 miles away. Here at ACES / American Crocodile Education Sanctuary, you can see several troops almost daily. The young are normally born with the onset of dry season, around December/January. Come stay in ACES Croc-Cabanas and awaken to their resonating calls while You Help Take a Bite Out of Extinction!

Plant ID: Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia)
Plant ID: Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) Genus: Jacaranda Species: mimosifolia Family: BIGNONIACEAE Common name: Jacaranda Plant type: Deciduous Origin: Brazil Habit/Form: A popular, graceful, beautifully hyacinth-blue coloured flower early blooming tree. This tree does very well in the Sydney climate: holding its leaves through winter, dropping leaves in mid-spring, producing new foliage in early summer. This kind of growth habit can also be described as semi-deciduous although it is deciduous in its natural environment. The size of the species can actually range from 2m shrubs to 30m trees. Usually single trunked, medium tree 12-15m x 12-15m, with a broad dome of curving branches and twiggy canopy. It is not uncommon to find established large size specimens. The trunk has rough, small fissured, mild neat/clean to fairly deep furrow, pale-grey/light brown-tan grey bark. Jacaranda notoriously hates being pruned. Prunes and wounding usually causes massive epicormic shoots to grow upright, developing unsightly suckers. This is a vigorous tree that can handle neglect once established, but do not mistake it as having the versatility of a London Plane tree or Brush Box; prefers well drained moist soils, but hardy to most moderately draining soils. Jacarandas tend to be frost tender when young and also like a little wind protection. Can be long lived. Leaves: 300-400mm long branchlet of opposite bipinnate arranged small leaflets. Each leaflet is lanceolate/elliptic 10-15mm x ...

Tourism Destination-Perlis State Park
The approximately 50 square km Perlis State Park (PSP) is situated in Mata Ayer Forest Reserve and Wang Mu Forest Reserve. PSP is located along the western border -- where peninsular Malaysia meets Thailand. Situated on the longest continuous range of limestone hills (38 km) in Malaysia, called the Nakawan Range. The range has beautiful natural formation of forested slopes and extensive underground cave systems. It is a semi-deciduous forest with unique fauna and fauna including several species not found anywhere else in Malaysia. It is a great conservation area of flora and fauna of this northern most state of Peninsular Malaysia. The uniqueness of the limestone hill ecosystems and the richness of both the animal and plant species found in Perlis State Park are undeniable. It is a natural treasure of rich biological diversity where the limestone hills are home to endemic flora and fauna. Bogak Perlis (Cycas clivicola) which can be found only in Perlis, Langkawi and southern Thailand are widely distributed on steep limestone hills particularly in Perlis State Park. These cycads are living fossil, due to their existence since the dinosaur age, more than 250 million years ago. Beside this great biodiversity, there are caves like Gua Wang Burma I and II and the northern most point called Gunung Perlis. For more information please log on to www.88Holidays.com or http or www.facebook.com

Peccary snapping
This is a video of a White-Lipped Peccary snapping her (canine) teeth. Peccaries do this as a warning to possible attackers or predators. She has injured her nose superficially by trying to break out of the trap. Peccaries are a favorite food of the jaguar, as well as the mountain lion. This peccary was trapped for research purposes, and outfitted with a radio-collar, then released shortly after this video was shot. This peccary lives in the semi-deciduous forest of the Cerrado in Brazil, not far from Campo Grande, Brazil.

Landscaping Ideas for Shade
Landscaping ideas for areas totally or partially covered by shade include the use of boulders, evergreen bushes, understory trees and a variety of annuals. Learn how to keep a beautiful landscape even in the shade with this free video on landscaping tips Hi, I'm David of Smartscapes, LLC here in Nashville, Tennessee, and today we're going to be going over landscaping in partially shaded areas. There's a lot of cool stuff you can do in partially shaded areas. Here as can probably tell it's a berm on the perimeter of the property blocking out the neighbors but we have a tree line behind us and some trees in the yard that's going to generate a little bit of shade. So we had to design our landscape around that. We can use several different mediums when we're doing it, we can use boulders, we can use perennials, we can use evergreen bushes or semi evergreen bushes like Viburnum in the back or we can use a deciduous, deciduous bush like the Hydrangea right here. So, combining these components into a shade type or semi shaded landscape can help you get several different, different feels and flavors to bring out a complete landscape. I'll show you a couple other examples. Here you'll find a couple other great solutions for semi shade landscaping. Understory trees that usually does really well in semi shaded areas. Take for example this Redbud, it was recently hurt in the storm but it gets a nice purple color and it's an understory tree so it should be under bigger trees and ...

Dry deciduous forests and Scrubs: These forests grow in areas where the rainfall is between 50 cm and 100 cm. These are found in areas of central Deccan plateau, South-east of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Dwarf Deciduous trees and long- grasses grow in these regions. Most of the areas are used for agriculture. Semi- deserts and Deserts vegetations: These types of vegetations grow in areas where rainfall is less than 50 cm. Mostly thorny bushes, acacia, babul and sand binding grasses are found in this vegetation zone. The Indian wild date, known as"Khejurs" is common in these deserts. These plants grow far apart from each other. They have long roots and thick fleshy stems in which they store water ti survive during the long drought. Located 42 kms from Junagadh, Gujarat, the Gir Sanctuary spreads across 1412.13 sq kms. Fed by perennial and seasonal rivers and streams, the sanctuary has large water bodies like the Kamleshwar Dam that are good for crocodiles and birds. It was created to protect the last wild population of Lions outside the African regions. Since 1913, when the lion population over here fell drastically to just 20, the numbers have increased to around 300. It houses the pure Asiatic lions. According to the 2005 census, the total number of lions here was 359. The region has deciduous forest interspersed with semi-evergreen and evergreen flora, acacia, scrub jungle, grasslands and rocky hills. Gir experiences a tropical monsoon climate.

Goumi (Elaeagnus multiflora) Cherry silverberry
Another Food Forest video in my series on Nutraceuticals Substances which combine "nutrition" and "pharmaceutical", is a food or food product that provides health and medical benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. The video was taken at the Food Forest at Charles St. Gardens Goumi like Autumn Olives are a species of Elaeagnus native to China, Korea, and Japan. Elaeagnus multiflora is a deciduous or semi-evergreen shrub or small tree growing to 2-8 m tall, with a trunk up to 30 cm diameter with dark brown bark. Goumi are high in vitamin A and E, bioactive compounds, minerals, flavinoids and proteins. Their lycopene content is the highest of any food and is being used in the prevention of heart disease, cancers and in the treatment of cancer. Cooking the fruit increases the lycopene content. The fruits and seeds are an excellent source of essential fatty acids as well which is very unsual for a fruit. The seeds are also edible although somewhat fiberous, and are especially high in proteins and fats. The fruit is round to oval drupe 1 cm long, silvery-scaled orange, ripening red dotted with silver or brown, pendulous on a 2-3 cm peduncle. When ripe in mid- to late summer, the fruit is juicy, tart and edible. All of the eleagnus species are nitrogen fixers. They take nitrogen out of the air and put it into the ground through a symbiotic relationship with a bacteria that lives in their roots, thereby improving the fertility of the surrounding soils.
