Making Video Search Semantic with Semex and Media Globe at CeBIT 2011
Making Video Search Semantic with Semex and Media Globe at CeBIT 2011
Semantic search for multimedia is a problem every video site would like to solve. Imaging being able to search for a person and getting results for every video they appear in, without needing a text description included underneath. Or trying to locate every video posted about a specific location. Or getting the context of several videos all about baseball or your favorite movie character. Semantic search is what's required to make this possible. Media Globe, a product being demonstrated at CeBIT 2011 promises to deliver semantic search for video assets, allowing search to pivot on all kinds of factors we can currently only dream of using. Here Nadine Ludwig and Jorg Waitelonis show how semantic search can work on the CeBIT show floor.

Sublime & Subliminal: Semantics for Online Advertising
Sublime & Subliminal: Semantics for Online Advertising
Google Tech Talks August 6, 2008 ABSTRACT Web advertising, hasn't delivered its potential value to advertisers. This is partcularly true for contextual advertisement. The main problem is that the marriage of ad and the content of a page is based on algorithms that do not offer satisfactory results in understanding the actual meaning of the content of a web page. Try the search "stock base" in Google or Yahoo. You will get many more pages about equities than you do about soup. Yet the ads placed on these pages are too often not related to the main topic of the article. Showing an ad about food when the intended use of "stock base" was in the context of equities it's a mismatch. Expert System now offers a revolutionary solution that automatically processes the meaning of the text to ensure that the ads selected are relevant. Expert System's CSA (Cogito Semantic Ad) relies on its Semantic Intelligence technology to analyze text on the page through linguistic analysis and Semantic Comprehension to assure that promotional information can be served more effectively. Speaker: Marco Varone Founder, CTO, and Director of the Board of Expert System, Marco is the "father" of the technology behind the Company's products and a key driver of the Company with his vision and technical skills. Marco is responsible for the R activities and roadmap in the software and linguistic areas. Marco holds a degree in Computer Science at the University of Modena with honors. Knowledge Representation and the Semantic Web
Knowledge Representation and the Semantic Web
Google TechTalks January 25, 2006 Peter Patel-Schneider www-db.research.bell-labs.com ABSTRACT The Semantic Web has been attracting considerable attention the last few years. From the point of view of Knowledge Representation, the Semantic Web affords opportunities for both research and application. However, several aspects of the Semantic Web, as it has been envisioned, cause problems from the Knowledge Representation viewpoint. Overcoming some of these problems has resulted in a more formal basis for the Semantic Web and an increase in expressive power in Semantic Web languages. Other of these problems still remain and need a new vision of the Semantic Web from a...

Transactional Memory: From Semantics to Silicon
Transactional Memory: From Semantics to Silicon
Google Tech Talks April 25, 2007 ABSTRACT Chip-level multiprocessing has recently emerged as one of the most effective solutions to the problem of increasing processor performance. As a result, issues related to construction of scalable and reliable concurrent applications have become increasingly important. In particular, providing effective means for controlling concurrent accesses to shared memory is currently one of the most pressing problems in concurrent programming. Traditionally, such accesses have been mediated using mutual-exclusion locks resulting in scalability, composability and safety problems. In this talk, I will present transactional memory, an alternative concurrency management...

Semantics
Semantics
I agreed with AgbAsl! Semantics is the study of meaning, usually in language. The word "semantics" itself denotes (to be mark or sign of) a range of ideas, from the popular to the highly technical. It is often used in ordinary language to denote a problem of understanding that comes down to word selection (an act, instance of selecting, or choice) or connotation (word suggests or implies). This problem of understanding has been the subject of many formal inquiries (seeking or request for truth, information, or knowledge), over a long period of time. In linguistics (the study of the nature, structure, and variation of language), it is the study of interpretation of signs or symbols as used by agents or communities within particular circumstances and contexts. Within this view, sounds, facial expressions, body language, proxemics (sociology, psychology- the study of the spatial requirements of humans and animals and the effects of population density on behavior, communication, and social interaction) have semantic content, and each has several branches of study. Forces triggering semantic change about social cultural forces like •Fuzziness • social reasons • Aiming • Flattery • Insult • disguising language • taboo, •Aesthetic-formal reasons (ie, avoidance of words that are phonetically similar or identical to negatively associated words) • Communicative-formal reasons (ie, abolition of the ambiguity of forms in context, keyword: "homonymic (one of two or more words that ...

The Future Internet: Service Web 3.0
The Future Internet: Service Web 3.0
Future Internet - Supported by STI International: www.sti2.org With over a billion users, today's Internet is arguably the most successful human artifact ever created. The Future Internet, an initiative driven by the European Union, has become a prime research focus of STI International and the Service Web 3.0 project. In order to explain, promote, and attract new contributors, we created a video to be viewed by stakeholders, who may be non-experts, in a new generation Internet. The video outlines the basic themes of the European Union's Future Internet initiative. These include an Internet of Services, where services are ubiquitous; an Internet of Things where in principle every physical object becomes an online addressable resource; a Mobile Internet where 24/7 seamless connectivity over multiple devices is the norm; and the need for semantics in order to meet the challenges presented by the dramatic increase in the scale of content and users. Stepping aside; the semantics
Stepping aside; the semantics
www.ntv.co.ke In Kenya they don't resign, they simply step aside. The two words; step and aside mean different things to different people. They are the politician's nightmare, but to those who care about accountability, a starting point in the battle to restore integrity. NTV's Emmanuel Juma examines the two words conveniently coined to give those stepping out of line a honourable exit.

Semantic Extraction in Slow Motion
Semantic Extraction in Slow Motion
Have you ever seen a semantic extraction engine in action? This video demonstrates how JoinVision's CVlizer application tags and extracts all relevant information from a common CV step by step in slow motion. The process of information extraction, usually lasting for less than a second, is broken down to its elemental operations, providing a completely new view on modern semantic technologies. Visit www.cvlizer.com and http for a live demo.
