Could You Live In The Outer Hebrides?
Back in August I spent sometime on the Isle of Lewis and Harris filming my "Lewis and Harris Series" for YouTube. While over there I sat down every day and spoke about how I felt living in such a remote but beautiful landscape. This video is a collection of the thoughts and feelings I gathered while over there, producing a video sure to make you think about modern day life.
So tell me...Could you live in the Outer Hebrides?

The Outer Hebrides | Scotland's Western Isles in 4k | Drone Cinematic
The Scottish Western Isles of the Outer Hebrides are a chain of inter-connected islands, each possessing their own unique character and way of life. The landscapes of these islands vary wildly; from boulder-strewn mountains, shell-sand beaches, flower-covered machair, countless lochs and lochans, vast watery peat bogs, to monuments built by long-forgotten civilizations. The local communities are warm and welcoming - a defining trait of Gaelic island culture.
Filmed over five weeks in the Summer of 2019, this film showcases some of the most dramatic environments and landmarks of the islands. Fourteen Hebridean islands are featured here; Vatersay, Barra, Eriskay, South Uist, North Uist, Benbecula, Baleshare, Grimsay, Berneray, Vallay, Lewis, Harris, Scalpay and Great Bernera.

The Western Isles / The Outer Hebrides - 1941 British Council Film Collection - CharlieDeanArchives
The sinking of the 'Atlantic Queen' and the survival of its crew is supposedly based off a real series of events where the S.S. Richmond Castle was torpedoed in the Atlantic Ocean, and crewman Angus Murray led the survivors' return to the UK in a lifeboat. Curiously, however, the sinking of the S.S. Richmond Castle occurred in August 1942, after The Western Isles was released.
Severe bad weather hampered the initial filming of The Western Isles, and extra funding was required to account for this.
In December 1941, the Ministry of Information stated that The Western Isles should not be distributed abroad, as it was counteractive to war effort. The Minister of Information, Brendan Bracken, personally wrote to the British Council, claiming that the film was "living proof of Goebbels' statem...

Technical Stuff
The climate of the Outer Hebrides can be very changeable which makes filming with a drone quite challenging. More so than normal photography. I was also mostly wild camping, which meant I had no way of regularly recharging batteries. I had to pick and choose my shots with care and make the best of the conditions available to me.
The most challenging shots were those of the Callanish standing stones. The site is usually busy with tourists during the day, and I wanted to get shots of the stones, not people! After a week of less than perfect conditions, the rain and cloudy conditions gave way to blue skies and I finally got the early morning shot I wanted. Strangely, the shots which required me to climb a mountain were much simpler.
Some shots are less than perfect as weather and lighting conditions are always in flux. Thankfully, I quite enjoy the post-production process.
The hyperlapse footage was the most time consuming to correct. Ideally you want very still conditions in order to get the most "fluid" motion. This is impossible when filming on islands where there is almost always a constant breeze. I used Adobe After Effects to stabilise all the hyperlapse segments (mostly frame-by-frame), as well as some of the other footage. It is far from perfect, but I am happy enough with the results.
Colour correction and grading is an area I have been trying to perfect. I like to try and keep my colours looking as natural as possible but given the limitations (lighting conditions, the hardware, poorly configured settings...) I have had to do some extensive colour correction. For the most part the colours are real, with a slight boost to contrast and saturation.

The British Council distributed the film nonetheless.
The film also examines the story of Harris Tweed during World War Two.

Note: I'm sorry the info boards in the video don't stay up longer. This was one of my first YouTube videos and I honestly made it for ourselves, when we had no subscribers, and didn't think anyone other family would watch. I would change it, but unfortunately YouTube doesn't allow you to re-upload videos.
In August 2019, we travelled from Edinburgh to the Isle of Lewis & Harris in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. There are no words to describe how much we love these islands and their people. We only had a few days in Lewis & Harris, but hopefully this video will give you a good idea of what to expect. Lewis & Harris are incredibly beautiful and completely unspoilt and we must keep it that way.
Please leave no trace or mark behind, except your love and wonder for a very special & magical place.

In the Inner Hebrides on the west coast of Scotland
The Inner Hebrides surprise with green hills, fine sandy beaches and a mild climate, at least as far as Scottish conditions allow. This is ensured by the currents of the Gulf Stream, as well as the Scottish archipelago being protected by its sister islands, which belong to the Outer Hebrides. More than half of the almost 80 islands are uninhabited. Loneliness has made the people rather inventive.
On Tiree Island, mathematics, history and physics from the mainland arrive in the classroom per mouseclick. Dr Mauvis Gore and Prof. Rupert Ormond cast off from the island of Mull, after setting a course to encounter a basking shark. The cetohinus maximus is the world's second largest fish and the two scientists are absolutely convinced that the waters surrounding the Mull constitute the mating ...

The Hebrides: Land of Legends - Wildest Islands - Go Wild
Lying just off the coast of West Scotland, the Hebrides archipelago is made up of more than 500 islands and islets.
Isolation from the mainland has made it the perfect breeding ground for millions of creatures, making it home to some of the largest gatherings, and greatest spectacles on the planet.
Over 35,000 Grey seals choose one small beach to give birth and do battle for breeding rights. On other isles, some of the world’s largest gatherings of sea birds engulf precipitous cliffs in a bid to raise their young.
On the Isle of Rum, Britain’s largest land mammal, the red deer, prepares for the annual rut, while Golden eagles patrol the skies anticipating their next meal.
For thousands of years, people have battled with the Hebridean elements – even the Vikings struggled to survive. Th...

Donals "Mellon" Melville organises the World Skimming Championships, a World Cup in jumping stones. This is all about the distance they are thrown and they must only hop above the water twice.

Stories of mermaids, giants and troll-like creatures litter the island’s shores, and evidence of recently abandoned communities adds more myth and legend to these mysterious lands.

The sinking of the 'Atlantic Queen' and the survival of its crew is supposedly based off a real series of events where the S.S. Richmond Castle was torpedoed in the
Atlantic Ocean, and crewman Angus Murray led the survivors' return to the UK in a lifeboat.
The Minister of Information, Brendan Bracken, personally wrote to the British Council, claiming that the film was "living proof of Goebbels' statements that the British are frivolous, or that they are fighting the war to perpetuate a way of living long since outmoded, or that they have lost the intellectual, moral and industrial lead which they once held." The British Council distributed the film nonetheless.
The film also examines the story of Harris Tweed during World War Two.
This film has been made available by the British Council Film Collection for non-commercial research and educational purposes . . The British Council Film Collection consists of 120 short documentaries made by the British Council during the 1940s designed to show the world how Britain lived, worked and played.
